My school counselor was amazing and my teachers helped me through the hardest parts of my life. I agree with another review that described this as feeling more like basic childcare than an instructional art camp. If that's the type of environment you're looking for, it may be a good fit. It was just a loose idea, and I need someone to help with executing it and didn't know where to start. When I looked up a few artists in the area, I found Dottie's website and loved the work I saw. I reached out to her, and felt so confident she was the right person just by taking to her. She is so pleasant and communicates well. She offered to help me with learning to paint/painting this gift myself, but because I wouldn't be in town, she happily painted what I needed on my canvas and had it ready before the deadline. The painting turned out INCREDIBLE! I am blown away by her talent, and her ability to put what I imagined onto a canvas. She also loved the materials and the "studio" (though it seems very cramped to me) The downside for us was instructors style of teaching. She was harsh and not really welcoming or kind. When I tried to speak with her and share my concerns on the second day she made a big speech to me about how important it is making sure the children aren't comparing themselves to one another so they need to be isolated to their own work with no talking to one another. I think in a 4 day summer camp my expectation was more about light-hearted fun than something serious like that. We won't go back for this reason so I can't give it 5 stars. I wish it had gone differently because Matilda's work is really great!

I had an unusual experience during open lab on Saturday morning. The space was quite crowded, and I…read moreapproached a table to ask if I could join. A woman seated there indicated that it would not be a problem. However, when I stepped away briefly to retrieve a tool, I was approached by a lab aide and instructed to move, as the table was apparently reserved for RAs. There was no visible signage or indication that the table was designated for that purpose. Additionally, to my understanding, RAs have access to a separate workspace, but they'll use of shared student space--especially during a busy open lab-- is somewhat confusing. Then another RA was complaining how students should know better, which is odd since the other RA said I could sit with her. Overall, the situation felt unclear, unwelcoming and rude.
