PROS: -We wanted an easy pitstop hotel for an overnight's stay on a long drive. This one is directly (I mean, closer than the gas station!) to the highway. -Speaking of, the "gas station" next to this place is an odd, but cool, Jack Flash. I've never heard of it (maybe it's local to the area???), but it has a fantastic liquor store and gift shop attached to the gas station. For grabbing something on your route, it's probably one of the better options I've seen. -Speaking of, when you're in town, there are a few fast food places, so you can easily grab something at night or in the morning and get right back on the road. Tiny town entirely filled with off-the-highway things. -Parking lot is right next to the hotel with tons of space. It's closer than the parking lot at my own apartment. -There's an elevator despite only having two floors. You don't have to worry about lugging stuff up stairs. -The bed is SUPREMELY comfortable. I'd say this is one of the best hotel best I've slept on in years. -While the place definitely feels like an old building, they've done a fantastic job keeping it up here. It does have that "classic, old hotel" smell, but it's not offensive (kinda soothing, really). The room is clean, they've updated the furniture, nothing looks super spotted or gross, bedside lamps have plug-ins in them, etc. Probably one of the better older hotel buildings I've been in, too. -AC did a great job overnight in the summer. It was a great icebox in here. CONS: -The shower floor is a bit slippery. Water pressure and heat are good, but just be careful getting into the first step of the shower. -Check-in was really weird, and it was by-far the longest check-in experience I've ever had. It took about 10 minutes while we were holding all of our stuff, and the woman didn't really talk to us. She picked up the phone, listened to the phone for a long time, didn't really say anything, and we kinda stared at the floor. At a certain point, near midnight in a city we were unfamiliar with and right off the highway, we were looking at our exits in case we were being stalled for someone to rob us - it was THAT awkward, quiet, and unnecessarily long.

I can't say one bad thing about this hotel. Clean. Smells good. Easy check-in. Confusing mattress…read more Clean bathroom. Just a good place.

The property was clean and comfortable. We were there for a reunion where other relatives stayed at other places and were not impressed. So - stay at the Holiday Inn Express. Easy to get to places in Vandalia (especially The Blind Society for eating). If you go to Walmart - say Hi to Margaret in the Vision Dept. from the sisters from Iowa. However, the AC was noisy. What is the deal with hotels not making sure their AC/Heater isn't too noisy? I've just learned to live with it.

So much that I was like "ya know what ... just forget it! I've changed my mind & i don't want to stay here tonight!". So me and my friend, we left and got a room over at the Quality Inn! They were at least very polite to me and didn't rush me at all! and their prices were awesome as heck!! I'll stay there next time too! SKIP this overpriced HOLIDAY INN bullcrap rudeness! She also had her meth-head boyfriend in there (i later found out that his name was Justin i believe and i guess her little child also). but it looked to me like he was dealing drugs out of that place! Cuz he sure had a lot of 'company' in & out of there!

The beds in the Rose and Lilac Rooms are Tempur-Pedic and make for a good sleep if you have a bad back. The little things go a long way here - the inn has cold bottled water constantly available and the proprietors strive to make the guests feel at home. We had an elderly relative along and he used Helen's Room which is the ADA room in the Carriage House - it was perfect for him and all went well. The breakfast is just fantastic. Buzz, our host, was a great host and made sure we were happy. There is nothing like breakfast in the dining room with the fireplace making warmth and enjoying freshly prepared breakfast. No conventional hotel can match this. Buzz also recommended some restaurants and we were most pleased with his recommendation. We really enjoyed Market Street Inn and will return in the future. If you are looking for a great Bed & Breakfast, look no further - this is it. It is worth a special trip if you are traveling on the interstates and looking for the feel of home while on the road. This exceeds anything offered by most hotels on the highway. It is a destination place to stay. I highly recommend Market Street Inn.

There is a little coffee nook on the 2nd floor with a Keurig and coffee pods. They are VERY clear on the website that you must be able to navigate a flight of stairs for 300 numbered rooms. However, the best way to navigate to the 200 rooms is also up a very steep staircase. It's a historic building so I get it, and they have tried to provide some accessibility with a lift on the outside of the building, but if accessibility is a key concern you may want to stay elsewhere.

This is not a Bed and Breakfast, no breakfast voucher either - so forget anything you read otherwise - I complained about the sign that was even in the window as you walked in stating Bed and Breakfast, which they did remove the next day. Speaking of walking in - I had to push the automatic door to the lobby open (they did fix that the next day) only to find a kiosk virtual front desk (from a different town/state who knows where, that had to call about everything that required attention). After we had drove a few hours, we did get a text to warn us that the elevator was broken (so check on that before you go, because it was still broke when we left). I had booked a room specific to 2nd floor, as my wife has some trouble with stairs after hip surgery (none on first floor, and 3rd floor only has stair access). After the steep climb with luggage (We heard some poor soul struggling to get luggage up the stairs and thought he was going to have a heart attack, but he made it before I was able to get out to help). We got settled in, but before the day was over... the TV quit working. Mr. kiosk suggested the typical things (reboot etc...) that I had already tried and had to show him a picture of the screen that showed it had no connection. He said they would have someone fix the next day after treating me like I did not know anything (I worked in IT over 40 years, I can tell when a Roku cannot connect to a network). Next day, after being out all day, came in to relax - no TV still, Mr. Kiosk said we could move to another room... OK we pack up and move to a new room, and it is super cold, go to Mr. Kiosk again because we could not find a thermostat, his solution ... we move to another room that has a thermostat we can adjust on the third floor - no - we are tired we don't want to lug up another flight of stairs, we will just get out another blanket. We did get a call at that point, and I was told the thermostat is currently in another room for the whole floor, but I can go and adjust (got there and it was set to 66), so we finally was able to settle in and watch TV for the night. (They are planning on making changes to have individual controlled, but something you might want to consider). The last day was better, but not sure we will be back even though we did like the room itself. Definitely, buyer beware - ask before booking.

During my stay I searched up and down, and asked the staff to keep an eye out. A couple hours after I had checked out, and asked to be called if it was found, I went back and luckily got the manager David who knew of my dilemma. So he took me to the room for a 3rd or 4th pass. Then we went to my rental car where he engaged just as committedly. He politely asked if I was ok w/ his help, and then used his cell phone lite to look where I had already looked, felt, and told him the retainer was not. But he could see it under the seat and stuck into a gap in the floor paneling. Pretty incredible. Very incredible. Forever grateful. Above and beyond the call.
