PROS: -We wanted an easy pitstop hotel for an overnight's stay on a long drive. This one is directly (I mean, closer than the gas station!) to the highway. -Speaking of, the "gas station" next to this place is an odd, but cool, Jack Flash. I've never heard of it (maybe it's local to the area???), but it has a fantastic liquor store and gift shop attached to the gas station. For grabbing something on your route, it's probably one of the better options I've seen. -Speaking of, when you're in town, there are a few fast food places, so you can easily grab something at night or in the morning and get right back on the road. Tiny town entirely filled with off-the-highway things. -Parking lot is right next to the hotel with tons of space. It's closer than the parking lot at my own apartment. -There's an elevator despite only having two floors. You don't have to worry about lugging stuff up stairs. -The bed is SUPREMELY comfortable. I'd say this is one of the best hotel best I've slept on in years. -While the place definitely feels like an old building, they've done a fantastic job keeping it up here. It does have that "classic, old hotel" smell, but it's not offensive (kinda soothing, really). The room is clean, they've updated the furniture, nothing looks super spotted or gross, bedside lamps have plug-ins in them, etc. Probably one of the better older hotel buildings I've been in, too. -AC did a great job overnight in the summer. It was a great icebox in here. CONS: -The shower floor is a bit slippery. Water pressure and heat are good, but just be careful getting into the first step of the shower. -Check-in was really weird, and it was by-far the longest check-in experience I've ever had. It took about 10 minutes while we were holding all of our stuff, and the woman didn't really talk to us. She picked up the phone, listened to the phone for a long time, didn't really say anything, and we kinda stared at the floor. At a certain point, near midnight in a city we were unfamiliar with and right off the highway, we were looking at our exits in case we were being stalled for someone to rob us - it was THAT awkward, quiet, and unnecessarily long.

It's also by a gas station, so it's got everything you need if you're passing through. The hotel is quiet, clean, and felt safe. They had soft beds, which was great. The water pressure in the bathroom was bad, but all things considered I'll take it. They had a nice breakfast spread with waffles, eggs, bacon, and packaged stuff if you're in a hurry. The staff was very friendly, too. We will absolutely come back next time we are heading through! Rating a 4 because of the water pressure and bc our AC was not working well. But otherwise was great!

We opted to go to a bar a couple of miles down the road (Gabby Goat) to watch a Packer game and came back to our room at half time as the game started at 7:20 and we were tired from driving all day. The lobby area was decorated beautifully for the Christmas holidays. As we came back from dinner we noticed 7 small decorated Christmas trees on a table. They were made by employees and guest were invited to vote on their favorite. There was also a cute present wrapping area. How fun. Super friendly staff. Our room was comfortable, quiet and clean. We had a standard king size rom that was roomy with a desk and side chair. The 40 inch tv to finish watching the game was awesome. My husband had some breakfast of sausage and potatoes and an orange to go. Standard breakfast fare. I was going to see if they had a grab and go bag as we checked out around 9 am but forgot. Starbucks chai tea from next door was going to have to do. We travel from WI to FL every year in December and Effingham has been a lunch stop. But we recently moved 3 hrs north so had our first overnight here and we plan on staying here each year going forward.

The beds in the Rose and Lilac Rooms are Tempur-Pedic and make for a good sleep if you have a bad back. The little things go a long way here - the inn has cold bottled water constantly available and the proprietors strive to make the guests feel at home. We had an elderly relative along and he used Helen's Room which is the ADA room in the Carriage House - it was perfect for him and all went well. The breakfast is just fantastic. Buzz, our host, was a great host and made sure we were happy. There is nothing like breakfast in the dining room with the fireplace making warmth and enjoying freshly prepared breakfast. No conventional hotel can match this. Buzz also recommended some restaurants and we were most pleased with his recommendation. We really enjoyed Market Street Inn and will return in the future. If you are looking for a great Bed & Breakfast, look no further - this is it. It is worth a special trip if you are traveling on the interstates and looking for the feel of home while on the road. This exceeds anything offered by most hotels on the highway. It is a destination place to stay. I highly recommend Market Street Inn.

However, I want to especially thank Erin. She was on duty the night of 3/4/26. After I arrived home from my visit, I thought that I left an expensive water bottle in the room. I called the hotel and got Erin. She was very pleasant and understanding. She immediately stopped whatever she was doing to search for my property. When she was unable to locate it, she contacted me to let me know. She didn't stop there. Understanding the value of the bottle and the urgency, she continued to search for it with no luck. Ultimately, I located the bottle in a different bag that hadn't unpacked yet. Although I was happy that I found it, I felt bad for sending Erin on a wild goose chase. I did call back to let her know and to apologize. She was so sweet and pleasant. She wasn't bothered by it at all. She was simply glad that I found it. She continued thanking me for the stay at the hotel and hoped I would keep the hotel in mind for future stays. Because of this, I definitely will. I will also recommend this location to friends and family.

This is not a Bed and Breakfast, no breakfast voucher either - so forget anything you read otherwise - I complained about the sign that was even in the window as you walked in stating Bed and Breakfast, which they did remove the next day. Speaking of walking in - I had to push the automatic door to the lobby open (they did fix that the next day) only to find a kiosk virtual front desk (from a different town/state who knows where, that had to call about everything that required attention). After we had drove a few hours, we did get a text to warn us that the elevator was broken (so check on that before you go, because it was still broke when we left). I had booked a room specific to 2nd floor, as my wife has some trouble with stairs after hip surgery (none on first floor, and 3rd floor only has stair access). After the steep climb with luggage (We heard some poor soul struggling to get luggage up the stairs and thought he was going to have a heart attack, but he made it before I was able to get out to help). We got settled in, but before the day was over... the TV quit working. Mr. kiosk suggested the typical things (reboot etc...) that I had already tried and had to show him a picture of the screen that showed it had no connection. He said they would have someone fix the next day after treating me like I did not know anything (I worked in IT over 40 years, I can tell when a Roku cannot connect to a network). Next day, after being out all day, came in to relax - no TV still, Mr. Kiosk said we could move to another room... OK we pack up and move to a new room, and it is super cold, go to Mr. Kiosk again because we could not find a thermostat, his solution ... we move to another room that has a thermostat we can adjust on the third floor - no - we are tired we don't want to lug up another flight of stairs, we will just get out another blanket. We did get a call at that point, and I was told the thermostat is currently in another room for the whole floor, but I can go and adjust (got there and it was set to 66), so we finally was able to settle in and watch TV for the night. (They are planning on making changes to have individual controlled, but something you might want to consider). The last day was better, but not sure we will be back even though we did like the room itself. Definitely, buyer beware - ask before booking.

He politely asked if I was ok w/ his help, and then used his cell phone lite to look where I had already looked, felt, and told him the retainer was not. But he could see it under the seat and stuck into a gap in the floor paneling. Pretty incredible. Very incredible. Forever grateful. Above and beyond the call.
