I recently had a negative experience at this gym with one of the trainers.
My friend, a Reign member, had not scanned in, along with various others I saw also not scan in (which may be the norm for many members here). She was approached by someone working at the desk and was told that a trainer had saw her specifically not scan in. My friend, obviously feeling upset and targeted, confronted the trainer (who was teaching a class of young girls) and asked why she had been asked to scan in in specific. The trainer then replied "..because that's the way we do things around here". My friend then responded and the situation escalated. When I came around to attempt to deescalate the situation, I asked why it was important for her in specific to scan in, in which she responded, "... I see her come in every day and not scan" and when asked how that affected the trainer she said that she "paid money to be here" & "it looks weird when people don't scan in". I would've understood if she told us that without scanning in we were a liability to the business, but her overall response was unreasonable and made me question her real motivation in doing so.
I want to emphasize that this is a trainer, not a manager, nor an employee. It is my assumption that she wanted my friend to prove herself to be a member, which is why her and I were extremely offended.
During the conversation, the trainer lacked professionalism about the situation. She began to curse at my friend, calling her an "ugly bitch", and said other things that made the company look bad. She also took off her earrings during the situation, which I'm assuming was to intimidate us (?). This drew lots of attention from her class and other people in the gym. I will take accountability and say that my friend was no angel in response, but she felt provoked by how the trainer reacted to her.
Other trainers got involved and threatened to have my friend's membership taken away because of the huge scene it caused. After arguing for about 10 minutes, we walked away and called Johnny (Reign manager), who helped us greatly.
As we were leaving, however, the police showed up. I'm unsure who called the police but it was completely unnecessary. If anyone seemed to be an aggressor, it would probably be someone who is taking their earrings off in signal of wanting to fight. Thankfully, the police officers had no real care of getting involved in the situation. After this incident, we decided to workout at the other Reign location.
Although the situation is now handled, I am still very upset on the lack of deescalation tactics from the trainer and her unjustified reason on why my friend specifically should scan in. It's obvious she cared less about the reputation of the business and more about my friend proving herself to be a member. I'm hopeful that in the future she is able to work on handling situations like this better as well as asking all people she sees to scan in instead of just one person.
I want to thank the person at the front desk, another member, and Johnny for helping deescalate the situation. They are very appreciated. I will continue going to this gym and I hope that I do not have to encounter this problem in the future. read more
