This company not only makes it so difficult to find a phone number to contact but once you finally get in touch with someone from the company they send you to an email and hang up the phone without even asking if they can assist you with anything else. Several unmet maintenance requests including fridge, sink, lighting, and more unmet for weeks on end. Our lease also excludes parking in the grass but the landlord has placed an ugly, eye sore of a port-a-potty in my yard. The lease is EXTREMELY strict and favors the land lord heavily. They also have pushed me to re sign my lease without meeting any requests. Very unprofessional and childlike. The lady who we were in direct contact with was named Kerri and she honestly didn't even seem to even have a basic understanding of the law protecting property consumers rights. read more

The property manager, Cheryl, is most prejudiced. I moved in the premised on 5/25/23, and inspected the premises at that time. When doing so, I pointed out to Hailee, a number of flaws, patched up work, torn floors and substandard workmanship. On the first day moving in the plumbing in the bathroom backed up and overflowed. In the garbage disposal, washer ad dryer backed up and there was water everywhere. The handyman on duty assisted us as best that he could and also had to call in rotorooter to replace the toilet due to the buildup of calcium and other trash. I have been served with a notice that my lease would not be renewed, however, Cheryl, could not/refused to say why. It is my belief that she is refusing to renew my lease because I have made too many complaints about the neighbors who live in the apartment next to me on the ground floor. Those neighbors repeatedly refused to clean up after their dog. The neighbors right above me refused to silence their cat (or whatever feline that they have). It scratches, snarls, and farts all hours of the night and day. There have been many nights that I found it difficult to get a good night's sleep. That nuisance has been reported to Chery, whom I've invited to visit my apartment so that she can witness the constant noise, instead, she visited with the neighbors upstairs over me. I've also been encouraged by Cheryl to call the local on call officer when the noise occurs. Initially, I did that, however, the officer reported that he did receive a call! He lives in the building right next door to the building that I live in. I've even called local law enforcement, who came out reported that he did not see the cat, because it ran away and hid! My monthly rent is ALWAYS paid in time and before the due date! I believe that my lease is not being renewed due to racial reasons! The tenants that I have complained about are of a" different persuasion", while I am black! Cheryl once invited me to move to another building, instead of asking the noise makers to move to another building. She is clearly prejudice and she cannot hide it. My apartment is well-kept as witnessed by maintenance, in spite of being raggedy, patched up and broken down in may areas. Therefore, Cheryl has not excused for failing to renew the lease. When asked, she fumbled and stumbled over her words and merely said that "management has the right not to renew the lease." REI might possibly be the worst possible group to rent with on campus. The last thing they make an effort to do is make sure their clients are happy. However, their main focus is to drain the bank accounts off their tenants with tons of B.S. fines. We received a fine for "trash left around the house" for $100. We emailed back asking for an explanation and proof of the trash around our house because there wasn't ANY... we also told them the fine would not be paid until our utilities like A/C, sink drain, and leaking shower to be fixed before anything gets paid. They STILL haven't fixed any of the three issues and their only response was unloading more fines on us.... NEVER RENT WITH REI!!!!!!!!!! Also.... A guy named Steve R. Is going to get on here and make a reply to this review saying I'm just an unhappy tenant who broke the lease agreement. I have never heard of this guy nor dealt with him, so please disregard anything he says trying to defend this corrupt company....... My husband and I rented out our home through REI when I had to relocate to another state for a job. The first tenants brought in by REI were great but they moved out after about 6 months. We also had a great property manager when we signed up but she also left the company after about 6 months. The next set of tenants brought in 3 dogs, trashed the house and did not pay rent for about 4 months and prior to that paid sporadically. REI then charged the tenants damages to the property when they moved out, which they did not pay so we had to pay for all of the repairs which of course were over charged. We had a property manager who it seemed always over charged on repairs and kept wanting us to call her husband who was a contractor to get an estimate to repair our roof which was not in need of repair. She kept saying we could just have our insurance cover it as they could say it was storm damage. I understand....insurance fraud is not a big deal to this company but I did not want to be involved. We had to take the tenants to small claims court in MN from out of state because REI said they do not work with collections and if tenants don't pay they cannot help. It was a huge pain and although we won our claim (not the full amount but over half) they still never paid. I feel like REI stole several thousand dollars from us based on the repairs we had to pay for, convincing us to give these tenants another month and another month...and not helping with managing the collection of payments. REI still charged me every month but didn't seem to care that I wasn't receiving any rent. We had a 3rd tenant who was Ok, but also paid the rent late almost every month and her last month she only paid half and I never received the full payment. I regret having signed up with REI and do not feel like they were professional and did not have my best best interests in mind at all. We were finally able to sell the house at that point but not before taking a financial loss. read more

PUBLIC PLEASE NOTE: Steve R. is a liar. There were NO dogs living on the premises. The only dog to come over belonged to a family friend. It weighed 20 lbs, was entirely housebroken, and visited 2 times a month MAXIMUM, which we were told was acceptable by REI. The dog damage was done by the home owner's Great Dane BEFORE we moved in. Damages were not repaired by REI for the entire time we lived there, even though we asked repeatedly to do so. Multiple holes in the yard, torn up carpet, piss stains in carpet, dead grass all over from the Great Dane, just to name a few. The clogged toilet was done admittedly by the homeowner because it was a bunch of tampons, which I obviously don't use. She paid for it, but that's not the point. The point is that dirty, discusting water was being dripped from our ceiling for 2 WEEKS before REI did anything about it. THAT is the most upsetting part. The only thing Steve R. is right about is the fact that I AM upset, because REI wrongly stole my money, and will no doubt do it again. read more

I was just speaking with a representative today, Friday 2/21/14, Nick Gravemann, about renting a property on behalf of a friend of mine, Brandon. I have communicated with Nick back and forth already and indicated that I was a neutral third party interested in helping my friend rent a property because he is close to me. Naturally, when I noticed a nice property at a good price in Apple Valley, I wanted to help my friend see it before it went off the books to someone else. I called Nick today to narrow down a showing time. Nick immediately started interrogating me over the phone asking why I was helping my friend out and why he wasn't the one calling. In fact, Brandon had just called Nick a day or two before- and also stated NIck's behavior seemed odd, to say the least. I explained to Nick Brandon's car was in the shop and that is why I was calling him, as I would be the one driving. Obviously, me driving him to a showing depended on my schedule more than Brandon's at this point in time. Apparently Nick did not put 2 and 2 together when I explained that I was calling because I wanted to help a friend. He continued to interrogate me and even went so far to say he was "leery and uncomfortable" of this situation and he worried about his "own personal safety." I was completely dumb-founded. Not only had Nick not been paying attention to his emails (because he would have then understood the situation), but he basically turned me off from EVER wanting to refer anyone to REI Property Management. I stated on the phone I was shocked by the way he was treating me and that no wonder he had not yet found a renter for this property. This poor level of customer service amazes me. I get it, ask me once or twice if you can't remember about the situation, but to completely interrogate me over the phone is a whole another. On the plus side Steve, the owner, was understanding of the situation and will address it. I would highly recommend, however, to steer clear of Nick Gravemann for any leasing needs based on his poor level of customer service and interrogative personality. read more

Do not rent a property from this company. I rented a place for over five years. I put down a deposit of almost $1800. I got none of it back. I took care of the place. I followed the move out checklist. I also took photos before I left and can prove some of things they claimed were damaged were not. I am only giving them a 1 start because 0 is not an option. I have a property managed by REI. They do not care about the properties they manage. Withholding no deposit for repairs needed due to damage caused by tenants. Not notifying me of any items needing repair and requesting I do not go to the property to check on it. Six years ago I hired REI Property Management to manage a residential property for my client. REI managed the property, and kept it rented with quality tenants for the entire 6 years, until it was sold. I found them to be outstanding. Dan Schultz, my contact person at REI, returned my calls promptly, screened tenants, collected rent, made repairs (economically), provided reports, and handled the property as though it was his own. The office staff and the owner (Steve) are meticulous in keeping the records, leases, checklists and paperwork in order. Additionally, REI always treated the tenant fairly and kept the Landlord -Tenant relationship cordial. My girlfriend and I got a relatively cheap rent from REI ($895 a month for a two bedroom apartment in Eagan). Our property manager was decent when we moved in, but things got worse over time. They advertised the apartment as dog-friendly, but when it came time for us to get one, he had to check with the owner, and the owner stated he didn't want dogs in the apartment. I wish he had looked this up before hand as we were pretty bummed that we could no longer get a dog. Neither the dishwasher nor one of the showers in the apartment worked very well. We brought this up twice to the property manager, and he sent out people to try to fix the problem (not sure if they were plumbers or appliance specialists or just handymen). Both times, they couldn't fix the problem, and the manager just said it was okay since he knew about it. He did the same thing when we moved in when he noted paint that was missing from some spots the walls. When it came time to move out, I wasn't around, but my girlfriend noted that he was "mean" and disrespectful. We just got our security deposit back, and we were a little angry that $300 was taken away when we felt we left the place in decent shape (or at least the same we found it when we moved in). Reasons for the deduction was the broken dishwasher, the broken shower, and a paint job. Conclusion: We got a good bang for our buck in terms of rent price, but the headache with management wasn't worth it. read more

I'm just a really thankful person right now and want to offer my experiences. I worked with Real Estate Agent Sandra Jimenez from REI, as well as REI Property Managment President, Steve Rajavuori --- who had referred me to Sandra. At first I had every intention of working with REI as my Property Management Co. for the house that I own, but I decided to then sell my place & work with them as my Real Estate Agents. I originally heard about REI from some of the great reviews from Friends...Example: friends of my family own 3 Houses (!) but they live in Japan (!).. they've been working with REI for years to manage their 3 properties & find renters too. They say that REI does a GREAT JOB at doing EVERYTHING for them.. Definitely full service! I believe they also have some sort of flat fee every month of $100 or something like that..(?) very reasonable to manage & take care of your property! Re: REI's Real Estate Agent: Sandra Jimenez.. Shes soo great to work with! Even my step-mom (who was a successful realtor with Caldwell Banker & ReMax too told me this in a text): Quote: "You sure did pick the right Realtor she (Sandra Jimenez) is very very good!" Coming from my step-mom or any fellow Realtor..this is an amazing compliment in regards to Sandra Jimenez of REI! Sandra is not telling me to write this... Im just writing because I think that someone needs to know what a truly great Realtor she is & REI Property Management & Real Estate as well! Sandra is a great communicator, hard worker, thoughtful, caring, considerate, aware, smart, etc. too.. I now i just want everyone to know how much she had meant to me, my family, & friends as well.. She just has no idea how she has so touched our lives being here for me (& all of us as well) like she has! We love her like she was part of our family... What a dear lady she is! Practical things she did too was: stand in the cold for hours in my garage (Sandra & her hubby too) while my tenant of whom I had to evict was finally moving her belongings after months of non-payment. She was there for me when i couldn't be there. She also was kind but also very firm with the tenant that I had to evict as well... (Long story). I appreciate how well balanced Sandra is. After I decided to sell my home vs renting it out-- Sandra's input & smart advice made me able to sell my home super quick. I wound up with multiple offers within a couple hours (!)... and then I had a buyer come in offering cash for my whole place. This wasnt because she advised me to offer my home at a low cost.. it was simply listed at the right price causing these multiple offers.. which made me alot of money in the end. I'm so glad I just listened to her her wise advice to paint, & more... as its true-- it-takes-money-to-make-money sometimes. Also, it's great to have an experienced Real Estate Agent who knows the area well. Like others, I wish I would have researched REI before signing that lease a year ago. My experience mirrors that of others users here and around the internet. We moved in and the unit was disgusting and the carpets were soiled with animal urine. They were unresponsive to any issues that occurred during our tenancy and were rude and full of excuses when they did respond. Today I talked with their corporate office and the girl on the phone could not even grant me her full attention as I attempted to relay a message to someone who could help. I agree with other users in that they are trying every way possible to keep a portion of your security deposit. The property manager, Dawn Sadler rushed through our initial walk-through of the property.. completing most of it before we even arrived. There were a number of things wrong with the property, all of which I took photos of and when I informed her of the issues, she said she did not need the pictures and that everything was documented... Upon move out, again, she told me to fill out forms while she did the walk-through. She said the only thing she could see was that the water softener salt was low and that everything else looked great. Then we received our deposit back and it was shorted almost $600 do to their errors. They gave us a fake water bill estimate - according to the water company they refused to give an estimate for a rental property - and in addition took money for the first quarter of 2016 water bill which we had already paid and that was already posted prior to them contacting the water department Steve, if you are out there I encourage you to respond here .. because I am still waiting for the call back you promised 2 months ago. read more

I had the best experience with REI, Teri Leads especially. When I didn't sell my house and needed to move across country, Teri had it rented within a week to very reliable tenants. Communication was great. She made sure things were taken care of for my tenants and made sure the property was being well maintained. When my tenants moved out with no notice she made sure rent was collected from them until she sold the home, which was done in 6 weeks. Teri is very approachable and professional, even responding to me while on her vacation. I would not hesitate to use her again. read more

I wish I could rate lower honestly. My girlfriend and I were looking to relocate closer to Minneapolis for an easier commute. We found what looked to be an awesome property in Otsego, MN we wanted to rent. It had been on the site for 8 days. I tried to get in connect with the agent (Shari Gesche). I called a handful of times and left voicemails which were never returned. I figured I would try texting her. I sent text and it went through showing it was an iphone, again.... not returned. I figured I would call their office and maybe they could help but was told I needed to speak with Shari. Since I couldn't ever get her on the phone I sent an email March 21st. Shari responded the following day asking how many people would be living there and the move in date could be May 1st (so we know the property was still available). I emailed her back 20 min later, shockingly never got an email back. Sent another Friday March 24th and stillll, you guessed it.... NO ANSWER. Luckily we found a very nice place with a different company this week and they were an absolute breeze to work with. I really think I dodged a bullet, cant imagine what could have happened if we moved in and had an issue with the property that needed to be fixed in a timely manner. read more

She has been an absolute pleasure to work with and a great partner and asset to the industry. In part to renting my home through REI I was out of town for the first 12 months whereas not only learning a new position, company, but also city and state. Terri made the transition with my home seamless and over the years and a pleasure to work with around any potential needs associated with the renters, association and options with the home. I felt it important to share the partnership I have had with your trusted employee, colleague and subject matter expert in the industry. Terri is about her personal touches, heartfelt conversations and objective viewpoints. I consider her someone I can trust with not only my home, but so much more over the time spent building our relationship. Their online monthly rental payment system is slow, outdated, and has flaws. If you want to pay from two accounts even before your rent is due it will tell you that it takes 7 days to clear and you will get charged a late payment even if the partial payment has cleared at your bank. Contacting them is frustrating also... They are short staffed and don't return calls. Go through someone else if you don't want the headaches. read more

They routinely took 3-5 over a week to return calls and emails (sometimes they didn't return them at all). They do the bare minimum as far as work and act like they don't really want your business. They also seem to be all over the place as far as not knowing what they are doing. I found a different management company in the area that is A LOT more efficent and charges less in fees. I was trying to reach this company about a rental that they had advertised. They seemed completely uninterested in getting back to me about its availability. After repeated phone calls (and emails) I finally learned that the property was in the process of getting leased. No one ever called me back. But I think that if you're calling yourself a 'property management' company, then maybe you have a certain standard about representing your properties and responding to expressions of interest. I have been trying to contact the main lease agent Aaron Hiltner to no avail. I have tried calling multiple times at all hours of the day, left voicemail's, emails, and calling other agents. I have not heard a single reply from him or any other agent for that matter. Have you ever had a professional job and done less than the bare minimum to keep it, and then expect people to lease properties from you? You cant make this stuff up if you tried, truly. I'm waving my wallet around and they could care less about getting my money. Reading the other reviews I was not surprised to learn how bad they are at their jobs. My girlfriend and I decided to rent a home through REI this past April, 2014. The realtor was initially very friendly. The home itself was still in the process of being moved out of. This did seem unusual, but we were assured that all the previous tenant's personal possessions would be removed from the home if we were to rent it. We decided to rent it as the price was fair and it was a good location. Our move in date was 1 month past the date we looked at the home. When we arrived at the home to begin moving our things we were surprised to find a tremendous amount of possessions from the previous tenant still in the home (grills, lawn furniture, a garage full of miscellaneous items, closets with trash in them, etc). We contacted the realtor who asked if we could keep it until the tenant had time to pick it up. REALLY?!? We refused and emphasized that we would not pay full rent for only part of a home. This involved days of back and forth emailing and calling until finally the realtor got someone over to remove the items. Then we find that the front door deadbolt does not work, the screen door on the patio is missing and the main kitchen window leaks. We again, contacted the realtor (who is supposed to be our contact person) about these things. Again, we had to put up with several days of keeping on the realtor to have anything done about it. Her response was, "it passed inspection." This all occurred the first week of living in the home. The realtor refused to have a new screen door put on the home and the neighbor (not associated with the company) helped US fix the dead bolt and window. The realtor finally offered us a discount on the 1st month's rent due to US doing HER job. When rent came due she asked for the full amount, rescinding on her agreement (which we had in writing). She then offered to have the first month's utilities covered. Come this month, June 2014, no big surprise all the bills came with late notices for not receiving payments the prior month. We have now contacted REI once again to find out if she plans to uphold her agreement. It rained for majority of our first month living in the home so we kept the windows shut and began to notice a odor from the basement. The carpet, which was mildly stained during the walkthrough, now gave off a distinct pet urine odor. Again, we contacted the realtor who responded with, "it passed inspection." We borrowed a carpet cleaner and cleaned the carpet by rinsing and cleaning taking out bucket after bucket of dark brown water in order to dilute the smell. The realtor has refused to provide professional cleaning despite the fact that she visited the home and sent us an email acknowledging the odor. So far, two months of working with this company, has cost us weeks of our time in doing the job a property management company should be doing. I strongly recommended that you go anywhere else to rent, buy or have your property managed. As the service offered is not professional, not honest and frankly very difficult to work with. read more

DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH REI! After a two year least I've continued to find this company very disreputable. They refused to allow me on site during the final check out inspection after the manager (Craig) set an appointment to do just that. Once there he said he just needed my forwarding address (an appointment needed for that?) and basically shooed me out the door. We spend 3 days at 8 hours each day cleaning the location and they stated the still would have professional cleaners come in ( of course at our expense) because of dust that accumulated. They want to charge us for touching up the paint (after two years of living there) wouldn't that be normal wear? They demanded professional carpet cleaners (we complied) but still stated they will have another company come in afterwards (again at our expense). The upper carpet in the place was approximately 12 years old, and they finally decided to have it replaced, so they won't get an occupant for this month. I honestly feel they are trying to recoup the lost revenue for that at my expense. If you ever HAVE to do business with them DO NOT TRUST THEM. Zero Stars. This company continues to disappoint. Awful. Unprofessional. Trashy. Money hungry and LAZY! I am in my second year of a lease in a home that has been nothing but problems and my third "property manager." They have "lost" my rent check twice - but were sure to charge me a $75 late fee when I brought it to their attention that my checks had not been processed...I now pay online and am sure to keep every receipt for payment. I have had to fix things at the property myself with the promise that if I send the receipt I will be reimbursed, I have sent receipts and have never been reimbursed. I will not fix one more thing in this home. When the "property manager" had to come to my home to meet a service man she complained to my 14 year old son that "this is ridiculous, I live in Plymouth I shouldn't have to be here for this - your mother should be here to meet these people. The owners should find someone closer!" What exactly did she expect my 14 year old to do? His response was "this is your job, you get paid to be here." He was mortified when I got home that she acted this way in front of him and the service man at my home. I was recently told that the rent would go up $50 d/t the increase in association fees, (which btw are public knowledge, they did not increase) I questioned my property manager after looking into this and she said she "spoke to the owner and everything will stay AS IS." This was in June. My understanding as most people I'm sure would understand that statement to mean that the rent and the lease would stay the same. I was never sent a lease for my renewal this year HOWEVER 3 months later when I went to pay my rent online lo and behold there was the rent increase I was told was staying "as is." When I questioned the "property manager" her response? " Well someone should have sent you a letter." Who exactly should have sent me this letter? She took no responsibility instead she was instantly defensive and nasty to me about it citing her first email as my "60 day notice" and her email in reference to everything "staying as is" was in re to the lease. This company is horseshit. Run, Run now. Fast. Do not rent from them or ask them to manage your property you will have constant turn over in tenants- they represent you - the homeowner/property owner and unless you fit the description of the company in my opening sentence you can do better and you don't want them to represent you, spend a little more money and go with a better company - or - manage it yourself. My advice to anyone renting with this God awful company is to document everything via email so that you can print it so you can use it as reference, take pictures of everything if you have to use them - trust me you'll need it. I can't wait to be out of this place! I would never never ever use this company again. I would live in a cardboard box first. My family has managed their own apartment complex in my home town for 30 years - I could never imagine my father being as unreliable, unprofessional or disorganized as REI. We were advised in person and via email the property would be professionally cleaned including the carpets before we moved in. This was not the case, we moved in to stained and black carpets that smelled like dog urine, crumbs and food spills in all the cupboards and drawers in the kitchen, 30 plus bottles of old cleaning supplies left on the floor and in the laundry room (where my toddler could have accessed them), hair and other stuff (I do not want to know what) in the return of the whirlpool tub, dishwasher with black stains in it, the microwave and oven had black burnt on food in the bottom, there was food and misc. yuck behind the stove, I tried to move the fridge and after seeing something I could not identify I gave up and hope whatever lives behind the fridge stays there, filthy fridge and freezer with stuck in food in the door compartments. I could go on and on. Within 2 weeks of living there, my whole family was ill with cough, snuffy noses, sore throats, and my toddler broke out in hives. These are all symptoms of mold and when we mentioned possible mold to the rep we were advised to hire a mold specialist and give them the results. I'm starting to find out the hard way that this company not a good company to do business with. I also own home in California and have had no issues with my property Management company. REI however has been nothing but a challenge to deal with. Beth is my rep who is suppose to be taking care of the property that i live in. She is not doing a good job. I just got a bill for what is stated a repair for $58.00. Well what repairs took place? REI is now sending me this bill with out any explanation. Makes me think how many other they have done this to. I know the home owner is responsible for there property not the tenant unless i caused damage to the home which is not the case here. REI is trying to squeeze money out of me for repairs that have not even taken place. But they did tell me if i don't pat it they will deduct it from my deposit. Well i guess i will also see you in small claims court like your last tenant. Good luck in court if you don't correct your mistake. read more
