Typical REI co op with a ton of open space to put products in. They have almost anything you're looking for when it comes to outdoor adventures. Well organized. Saying they do the bare minimum is an over statement. Honestly shopped at REIs in Texas, Colorado, Maryland, Virginia, and was super excited for the one in Delaware. What a disappointment. Sure, they have the standard selection, albeit a little more limited than the other locations. Sure, the staff greets you and is friendly enough to ask if you need help. Sure, the prices are identical to every REI which is no sales and sucky last chance selections. What really matters is beyond this surface level obvious requirements is just how uneducated and unskilled the staff is. I have been to this location 6 times and not once did I leave in a timely manner because of some hassle. They speak without thinking and say some nonsense about how the Co-op works. News flash if you have the membership, the policies are written pretty clearly online so I know when you're speaking nonsense. The new people there don't even bother to ask so done who has been there a while to answer a question they don't know. Whoever is training the personnel needs to get removed and the whole staff needs to be remediated to know what customer service actually is and stop hassling customers and telling them half truths or making it so difficult to return something that you bought 2 weeks ago with receipts and all.... The tax free isn't worth it, go to another REI. read more

Yesterday was my first time in REI. I had a list of clothing items I needed before I entered the store. Taylor, a friendly and well organized REI employee, found everything that I needed. I found a three pair of very comfortable yoga pants that I am going to wear while walking and biking (not on my original list). I don't buy things like designer shoes or purses, jewelry or other shiny objects, but I'm pretty sure I've spent my kid's inheritance at REI. When I made the jump from car camper to day hiker, and then day hiker to backpacker, the folks at this store became one of my best resources for comparing gear, trying things out, and really dialing in on what works for me. The staff ask insightful questions, share real-world stories about how equipment has or has not worked for them, and give really good advice, even if it doesn't result in a sale. Twice now, I've gone to this store with every intention of buying a new backpack, and both times the staff members went through my existing gear and weights with me and recommended that I trim more from my base weight before purchasing a lighter pack. It saved me money and has made all the difference on my long trips. When it came time for my then 8-year-old daughter to start backpacking with me, the staff here were not only helpful in trying out different gear options, but really went above and beyond to make sure she was both comfortable and excited about our upcoming trip (she had been a little nervous). They asked her questions about where we were going, quizzed her on Leave no Trace principles, told funny stories about their own adventures, and encouraged her to send in a photo so they could see how much fun she had on our trip (there is a community board near the front of the store where they post pictures submitted by customers out on adventures). Seems like a small thing (they're just doing their jobs, right?), but most adult workers only pay attention to adult customers, so we both appreciated the extra attention they gave her. I swear by REI's one-year return policy (though I've never returned anything at this particular store) -- sometimes the gear you think will be perfect just isn't, but the only real way to figure that out is to test it out. This store also has an equipment rental program, which I intend to test out next month for an upcoming trip. There's a lot on offer here, and not just for hikers -- there's plenty of gear for cyclists, kayakers, runners, etc. -- so take your time, try stuff out, talk with the friendly staff, and don't forget to become a member of the Co-op before you leave! read more

As a long time rei member, visitor and patron of multiple rei stores around the county I have never been to one where we were blatantly ignored, and could not get anybody to help us. The employees are more interested in talking to each other and being on their phones then actually helping any customers. It was actually stunning because of the REIs I've ever been to all have had exceptional customer service, help and support. I would not go out of my way to visit this store again. We did purchase something but again with no help from any of the staff on the floor. We had to go up front to customer service. read more

Avoid this store!!! I was Approached by 3 different employees pushing Co-op membership hard. I patiently listened to what they had to say, took my item to the register and then that employee asked me again if I was a member. But to my complete disbelief, when I said that I wasn't, he then said "I'm sorry this item is only for our co-op members." It was a simple North Face rain jacket, not even an REI product. I hope North Face is aware they are pulling this BS. Complete waste of my time and beyond frustrated. Will NEVER be back! read more

Yesterday was my first time ever going inside an REI. I was on the hunt for waterproof winter boots with a good grip, and Howard introduced me to the selection. I ended up buying something from Nordstrom, but Howard was so nice and pleasant that I returned again today after playing on the REI website and having my interest piqued for an upcoming local outventure: specifically I wanted some moisture wicking, comfortable socks to wear with either my Adirondacks or Nike Combat Boots for a 15-mile hike. Howard couldn't have been more welcoming and knowledgeable. He spent several minutes sharing some of his experiences, and he also spent several minutes recommending the perfect socks based on my needs. I ended up buying three pairs from different brands to gauge which brand I like best: Darn Tough, Smart Wool, and REI. I had a really pleasant time despite my nerves about being out of place in this store. I will definitely be going back, and I'll be in good hands if Howard is there to offer his insight. read more

I love REI, I usually go to the one in Paramus but we were in Delaware visiting family. It was the first time we visited this REI. The store was open and airy like all REI's. The sales associates were very knowledgeable as we were looking at the kayaks, they even gave me a bandaid after my husband accidentally nicked my finger "testing out the kayak paddles". We spoke to a sales associate, sorry can't remember her name but she was very nice and knowledgeable. She explained the return policy to us, as we were wary of ordering from the REI website without seeing the product in person. My child even tested out a bike, and the sales associate was wonderful with kids. You really can't beat this type of service! Yes REI can be pricey but they stand behind their products 100%. I would visit this REI again, spacious, good product selection and fantastic customer service. read more

Sad to hear one of their most trusted employee was let go. He was good Evaluating our bikes. Helped us fix all our our bikes and was one of the Nicest person in the store. He helped diagnose my bike shifting and the Derailluer problems. He was also very helpful in choosing our bikes. Never thought about buying a REI novara bike but the specs and without Ultimately Brian and is advise we chose to buy a 29er ponderosa and a Diamondback. He was insistent that we try out the bikes and make sure Each one of us was riding the correct frame size and were comfortable Shifting to the correct gears. I visited this REI location on the first day of 2016 and technically it's the first place I shopped in the new year. Anyway, I checked out this store cause I was in need of spinning shoes. The store itself is pretty large and has a large range so make sure to ask an employee for help. I totally missed the spinning shoe section cause it's small and near the front. The employee that helped me, Jeff, was very informative and helped me pick out some shoes. Unfortunately, the ones I wanted were out of stock. They said they could order them online and ship them to my house but I passed on that. I just got the cleats. When I was trying on shoes they let me borrow real socks which was really nice when deciding on shoes. The employee told me they have a laundry service in the back - pretty cool! I would definitely check this place out next time I needed some active sporting gear. It's also a great addition to the Christiana shopping hub. read more

REI tries to do a good job of having a community board up front with free stickers sometimes, but they don't escape the traditional environmentalist trope of being elitist. The staff is disengaged and aloof from customers and the merchandise is not "new camper" friendly. I would love to see a push for fairer prices and more community classes available at this site. read more

This REI has a good selection of mid to high end gear. The prices vary greatly but you get what you pay for. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly. Take advantage of the classes they teach here, you can learn some things. They will fit you for a backpack if you want them too as well. Don't forget to join to rewards program. read more

REI sets the standard for outdoor gear. I went with my son before he did a 3 week backpacking trip in the mountains of North Carolina. He went for hiking boots and tried on so many pairs before finding the ones that fit just right. The staff exhibited more patience and expertise than I helping us through it. Anyone who avidly hikes knows your boots need to fit right. Anywhere else we would not have had the same selection in stock. There's plenty of other gear so anything you need you can get with one stop before disappearing into the woods. We have also ordered clothing online from REI that is not as fit sensitive. Advice: Get the membership with your first order. Do not wait. The savings are worth it. read more

Too bad you can't give less than 1 star. The doors opened at 955am and I walked in making eye contact with the employee behind the register, another on my way back to the footwear section, the employee in the footwear section and then proceeded to find exactly what I wanted. There was one other customer in the store yet NO ONE asked me if I needed help. I'm ready to buy, I need a new pair of hiking boots but instead I decided to walk out and spend my money somewhere else. My decision was solidified as I walked by 3 more employees, one which I assume was the manager since he was directing the other two as to the location of new merchandise, and again NO ONE asked if I needed help. This place is fantastic. I came needing equipment for my first backcountry camping experience. Steve was so helpful. He was knowledgable, thorough, and really took his time to make sure he got me what I needed. No one tried to up sell me or sell me something I didn't need. I love that they have a co-op philosophy.
