Came in before closing about 40 mins and was greeted promptly by staff to see if we needed any help or info for our shopping! Location is setup nice, 2 floor style like most. They have basically anything you need for outdoors activities. I've usually shopped for hiking gear and camel backs or osprey / rei branded stuff. Also got a pair of hiking boots. I think it's cool REI is a coop brand. Member owned. They have plenty of sales going on, bicycles standard and electronic assisted, survival gear, clothing from all sorts of brands, boots and hiking gear, camping gear, lanterns, knives, paddles, water shoes, and also have deals on traded in gear. My first time actually popping into a physical REI store! I've only ever shopped online via their website & haven't visited in person until today. This is an incredible store to visit if you're looking for outdoor needs! If you're going camping any time soon, skiing/snowboarding, water activities, running, hiking, biking... or even just looking for athletic wear & outdoor gear, this is the spot to hit up! I was surprised to see that they offer Vuori clothing here. I thought that Vuori only sold at their own stores, so it was a pleasant surprise to see on their second floor! I was very intrigued by their electric bikes that were on display on the first floor, by their shoe selection. Cannot lie, was very tempted to get one just because they looked cool! Of course, have to do some research first haha. The vibe was very similar to an LL Bean store, I loved it! This review is a paean to one of my favorite stores, the stalwart REI. I first became acquainted with REI back in the day when I was living in Washington State. I'd visited the original out-post in Seattle and was struck by the sheer amount and quality of the outdoor equipment. I quickly signed up to be a member. Climbing was and is a big deal in Washington and they had anything one's heart might desire at good prices. The camping and backpacking stuff was also terrific. At that time I had recently learned about the then bourgeoning idea of cooperative businesses of which REI is one of the grand-daddies. I loved the concept. The company began when a couple named Lloyd and Mary Anderson opened up shop in 1938 in Seattle with the primary purpose of outfitting mountain climbers with excellent Austrian equipment. As the company grew they expanded their merchandise to include anything you'd need for camping and backpacking. Decades later, the company took a broader perspective and began including all kinds of outdoor equipment for sale. When I first joined the REI the idea of cooperatives was in it's heyday. In fact, at that time I was working in a vegetarian restaurant cooperative myself. The idea is a simple one. You buy into the company, in this case with a small membership fee and at the end of the year you receive a dividend on the profits. With REI that comes to about 10% of the total of your purchases every year. You don't have to be a member to buy things at REI but that's the only way to get an annual dividend. At $20.00 for a lifetime membership, I don't know why one wouldn't join if you're any kind of outdoor enthusiast. While the store has really expanded now to include all kinds of outdoor and adventure equipment and clothing, it still holds a very special place in my heart for times gone by and good times yet to come. I'm fortunate that there's an REI a few miles from my home and I'm there pretty regularly even just to poke around. Most recently we purchased another kayak rack for one of our cars. REI frequently offers workshops and classes in various outdoor activities with staff that I find to be always friendly and enthusiastic. This is a business I believe in and really appreciate. They lose one star because the prices now tend to be high, dividends aside, and I know the original mission of the Andersons was to sell good equipment at affordable prices. Excellent customer service - friendly and helpful staff. (Which is definitely a rarity into today's world.) The store was clean, organized and had a nice flow to it. Kudos to management and team for a job well done! Not the largest selection, but definitely the best REI in the area (compared to Boston and Reading). Is it worth the drive from those areas? No! However, I travel extensively for work, therefore found no issue with distance. The shpeel: REI is also a cooperative, or a business owned by an disassociated association of people who pay a membership fee and reap in a massively distributed divided gain. Translation: pay $20 once, be a member for life and earn approx. 10% cash back for all purchases made in the form of a mailed check every year. And who doesn't love getting mail?! Also, if your initial purchase has any single item over $100, the membership pays for itself, as you'll get 20% off the most expensive item in your first purchase. For you of the local community mindset, a portion of their profits goes towards regional enrichment programs, trail and park maintenance and other feel-good initiatives. Love, love love this place. So I said 3x love, right? Why? #1 - LOVE their return policy. I can't tell you how many times I've come back from a camping trip totally disgruntled about something I had purchased. To date, I've returned a backpack, sleeping pad, compression sacks, etc even after using it on a trip and they have gladly taken it back so I can look for a better fit. #2 - LOVE the employees who work there. They genuinely want you to have a great experience with the equipment you buy and enjoy the trips you take. A couple examples: 1) I was in the checkout line with the AMC White Mountains map and the cashier suggested a lighter, larger and waterproof map and hopped upstairs to search the pile for it. 2) On a different occasion, another employee had helped me to get fitted for a backpack for almost an hour. 5 star service. #3 - LOVE the location. Close enough from home that I can make a quick trip down during lunch hour. While I'm there, I usually make a quick pit stop over at Whole Foods as well. What's not to like? read more

STAY AWAY FROM THE BIKE REPAIR--BRING IT TO A REAL BIKE SHOP!!! They will replace parts and do work without authorization and charge you for it!!!! My experience: I brought in my bike to get the Gold tune-up service done and they said it would be completed on Tues 6/3. I received a phone call at 6PM on Tuesday telling me my bike was ready and informing me that my front derailleur was rusted and needed to be replaced and when I picked it up I owed an additional $23 on work I had not authorized. I don't believe this work needed to be done as I had inspected the derailleur before I brought it in and I believe it was fine. When I asked them to produce the original part for me to see, they couldn't find the original part. I couldn't take my bike without paying, and the manager was out. The salesperson promised me that the manager would call me to settle the issue, but I have not received a call in the week since I picked up the bike. I'm going to escalate this with REI, but thought that a online review would also help others. BUYER BEWARE!!!! read more

I am starting to become a huge fan of REI. I'm not really an outdoors-y kind of gal, but I started to notice the vast selection of workout gear sold by REI, specifically cold-weather running gear. Let's face it, in New England, you need a solid breathable fleece layer to keep you warm. The staff is friendly and if you buy into a membership, you will receive a discount on each purchase AND receive dividends. You really need to consider the amount of money you'll spend and the frequency of visits before purchasing a membership, but when it comes to big-ticket items, it has the potential to pay off. Even better, the sales racks are always full of merchandise from last-season or going-out-of-season. I easily stocked up on running shirts from TNF for $16/piece. Now, that's a bargain! Nike, Patagonia, TNF, and many others are available in the fitness section and if you spend some time browsing the sales racks, you can easily find a great deal. My only complaint is that the store is always rather cluttered and it can be hard to find specific things. Oh, and be prepared to climb the steps! read more

Just a shout out to the bike shop crew at REI Hingham. I've had some issues with a new bike, and these guys tackled the problems like it was second-nature. Resolved fast, explained everything, reasonable charge. We have a few outstanding small bike shops around here...and it's good to see that the big outfits like REI take cycling seriously. It seems that REI Hingham has a few real bike geeks working in the back room. I could tell that they really get a kick out of the challenges and fixing things right. I have been a fan of REI for almost 30 years, since my first visit to the Berkeley, CA store. It's my go to store for anything outdoors. I was so glad when the Hingham store came because I would need to travel to Framingham or Boston. I've been happy with the service I get and with REI as a company overall. However, recently I had some problems with a roof rack, bike rack, and a new bike I bought. It took a couple trips to the store, but I have to say that the staff went out of their way to take care of me, which I really appreciated! I should have taken down everyone's name, but in particular Eric and Carey were really fantastic! If you need any needs for outdoor equipment, clothing, etc., I HIGHLY recommend REI and the Hingham store! I'm glad to be a member to a great company like this that has great quality products, training classes, staff that is familiar with all the products, and even has a yearly rebate back to members! read more

This review is only for the bike section of this REI store, and one employee in particular. I ordered my bike online through REI and had it sent to Hingham, which was the closest store for me. When it was ready to be picked up, CJ called to tell me that it was ready. He was super helpful in store and made sure I had everything I needed, the seat was the right height, etc. three months later my bike was stolen, which was a major bummer. I reported it to the police but unfortunately I didn't have the serial number for the bike. I called this REI to see if there was any way that they still had that information from when I bought it, three months ago. CJ answered and told me he'd call me back, and that he would have to look through old invoices for it. Much to my surprise he called me back five minutes later with the serial number, and even answered another question for me later in the day on top of offering to send me the actual form with the serial number on it just in case I needed it. He was very helpful and actually seemed to care, which you don't see very often. Anyway, still no sign of my bike, but if I ever do get it back it will be thanks to CJ! read more

As with every other REI store I've been to, Hingham's staff exemplifies customer service. There's a few younger staff that aren't as experienced, but the older staff members (30's and up) are usually outdoorsy types like their customers and take pride in being outdoors, putting different types of gear to the test. My wife and I have bought just about everything here at one point or another, bikes, cycling clothes, hiking boots, camping gear, backpacks, and the list goes on. Most recently, I upgraded my tent (the incident that prompted me to write this review) and had a great deal of help from 3 different associates, all giving me their opinions, reviews of their own current (and past) tents, how the different tents are holding up according to what they're hearing from the customers, etc. Since it's me, my wife and a 65 lbs german shorthaired pointer, we had a hard time choosing between various 2 person and 3 person tents. Technology has obviously changed a great deal over the last several years since I bought my North Face Boulder 33, and we wanted something lighter for backpacking (getting back into it after a long hiatus). Decided on a three person (given the dog is going to be sleeping in the tent and likes to stretch her paws out when she sleeps (Coco, stop pushing me off the bed!) and the staff was extremely helpful in going over the different functions, features, weights, etc. Although, I must say that I got more out of it after having done TONS of research online first. They let us set tents up in the store, kick around as long as we wanted, and we came back a few different times. Those folks are PATIENT. Unlike the rest of us. Never have any hesitation going to REI, asking the folks for help or purchasing anything given their 100% satisfaction policy. read more

Watch out for their hidden costs and undisclosed policies. I am a longtime member and am extremely disappointed at their current policy regarding bikes. I tried to order a Cannondale Quick Speed 1 bike ($1,099}. The fact they don't have it in stock is one thing as it is a high priced item, however they wanted to charge me an additional $75.00 for a "large " item delivery from their distribution center and another $33.00 to expedite (they consider that 3-5 days). I would say their customer service and sensitivity is gone. The "night" manager (Jen) quoted policy at least 4 times. I'm done with REI. BEWARE. They lost their customer touch! read more

2 enormous floors of goods for all outdoor activities. It took all my willpower to not spend the day there. The end of winter markdowns were great. I like that there are truly options of many products at different price points, and often the REI brand which is similar in quality to the expensive stuff. I have purchased goods for hiking camping cycling and running at this store, and always been please by the quality and the return policy. On my most recent visit, the staff was, as usual, knowledgeable beyond expectations, and not looking to make a commission- actually referred me to the website for more options. Bought a bike there a few months ago, and was told I was eligible for "a free tuneup" and was like ok this is a good thing. Rode it like a bike for a solid time period, this March I decided to bring it in before the season for my free tuneup. When I got there, I was told it was expired because I didn't bring it in within six months of the purchase date. This is unprofessional as I wasn't told of this "6 month" thing with the tuneup. So we payed for it anyway. Probably was 3 ish days when we got the call that my bike was ready. Picked it up, and like any smart person I took it for a quick test ride in the parking lot to make sure everything was working fine, my derailleur was skipping shifts 8-9 and wouldn't go into 10 at all. As well as my rear brake was pulling all the way to the grip to barely engage. So we took it back in for a repair that would take 30 mins. We sat there, waiting, just to be told that they "need to order a special bleed kit" for my brakes, made by SRAM, one of the biggest names in cycling snd something that they should have, as well as a possible brand new set of brakes in case they can't get it to work. I am here writing this review after a week of not getting my bike back. Will certainly never go here again, charged me crazy amounts of money and time. My local bike shop could've had this done in a day for nearly half the price. For your bike and wallets sake, never go here. They will charge you like a bad mechanic, trying to sell you anything they can. read more

I visit this area in the summer and end up spending a lot of time at this store. I am very envious, as I don't have one where I live. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. They have a nice selection, given that they are a relatively small store in comparison to others. They have a great variety for all different types of sports, such as kayaking/canoeing, paddle boarding, cycling, hiking, backpacking, camping, climbing, and in general pretty much any outdoor activity one can imagine.
