Traveling back through the Carolinas and stopped in to check out the used gear section. I am looking for some used rain gear at the right price :) I now live in a warmer climate, so my favorite items don't allow for lots of layers underneath. The staff today were all great. It was around 10:30am on a Thursday and there were only a few other customers around. We were approached to see if we needed help several times. This is the only place to buy shoes, winter, cold coats, and hiking shoes. We go in and have our feet professionally measured call Mike it's surprising how much they spread as we age! They have gorgeous, heavy coats that are down filled and so comfortable all while keeping out the cold. Really helpful, plenty of people to take care of customers. read more

I know, I know... chains are pretty average. Well this one I felt was especially not great. The store overall was a mess, things were hard to find and poorly labeled (with overhead signs, even signs when you were standing next to a rack- is it clearance? is it used? who knows). I specifically went in to look at shoes (hiking boots) and climbing gear, both of which they had very limited stocks of and I left pretty disappointed. I think it makes more sense to just shop online at REI and use the store for returns. One good thing, I was noticed by store employees who offered to help me find things which was appreciated but I was already on my way out. read more

Was not able to find a certain sleeping bag at the AVL store, so one of the associates called the GVL store to have it held for us. What ensued was nothing short of a cluster f*** and an exercise in horrendous customer service - not only at the store, but honestly at REI in general. TL;DR This is definitely not the shining jewel of REI. Poor customer engagement, ZERO customer service. Out of tune employees with no idea how to problem solve. Would give zero stars if I could. Wouldn't stop here if it was the end of the world and I needed outdoor gear to survive. ************* The particular bag we were looking for was indeed put on hold, but for some reason, it had not converted over to an REI Outlet item; meaning it was not at the REIO price and therefore not eligible for a recent deal. There was ZERO effort by the woman working with us to investigate, call a manager, make it right..anything. I was given some nonsense answer about, "it's not the same item..it's a different year model...etc." Umm, no. That item is NOT a new model, as there is no new model on the REI site, nor the manufacturer's site. You are just guessing and trying to avoid actually figuring out what's wrong. However, she was concerned with getting her morning break, as evidenced by her talking on her earpiece, "Well I sure would like one, I've been here since [8 or 9am].." Astoundingly unprofessional. I don't care about your break habits, nor do I care to hear your dissatisfaction with the schedule at which you receive (or don't receive) one. That is between you, your staff and your manager; but when you're with a customer, you should focus on that customer. I spent about an hour or two on the phone with REI customer service after leaving this disaster to try to figure this whole situation out, and got nowhere fast. After explaining TO THE PHONE REP what the website and inventory was, it came out that it was not at the price because it was still in the store. Had it "gone to where the REI outlet merch goes, it would have been priced lower." SERIOUSLY? This is merely a logistical issue, and really something that should have been able to be easily fixed. Really upsetting that this was the outcome. I get that they don't do price matching or any kind of adjustments (I've been told because they do dividends), but to look at a customer service issue, realize it's logistical, and not be able to fix it on the spot, is RIDICULOUS. No, you'd rather make me order it online, wait two weeks to get it, rather than to sell it to me right here and now. Next time either do something or get a manager. read more

This REI location is right off Woodruff road in a stripmall anchored with Whole Foods that is accessible by two lighted intersections. It's parking lot is relatively easier to get in and out of in comparison to many other shopping centers in the area which can make a big difference with holiday shopping traffic! The store was well stocked with high quality brands and products for nearly any outdoor adventure to include climbing, kayaking, sports, fishing, hiking, biking, swimming, camping, etc. They had clothing, shoes, gear, gadgets, supplies and essentials in nearly every section. Great gifts for yourself or a friend! A lot of recognizable brand names but also a good offering of store brand, more affordable options for everything from clothing to accessories. Several employees on the salesfloor available to help if needed. REI has a lot of stuff to look at but the store is pretty well organized by activity category. Each section of clustered shelves around the store are themed by department which makes it convenient to find something specific you are looking for. However this setup makes it easy to get turned around circling shelves, unlike when walking up and down aisles, I felt like I was missing displays walking section to section! The store had a lot of good sales throughout all of the departments. Each section of the store had a dedicated clearance shelf with relevant items marked down. There were areas towards the back of the store with several racks of discounted clothing from all departments. Probably more than a dozen clearance shelves scattered around store made for a fun and wandering bargain hunt if you don't want to miss a sale shelf! read more

This store is an outdoors persons dream. It feels like you're walking into a ski lodge with all the clothing, gear, and gadgets that you could ever desire. The price point seems a bit higher but REI will guarantee the products that they sell so have no fear. Do yourself a favor and sign up for a lifetime REI Co-Op membership. The cost is forever giving at $20. Every year you will receive a dividend based on the amount of your total year-end purchases. REI is what an outdoors store should be like! In Canada we have MEC but I would concur REI and this location have their game on when it comes to retailing and selection. They have a standup offering of clothes mixed in with outdoor camping gear and basically anything you will think of or need when shopping for hiking or camping. Prices also are very reasonable! They also have a cool selection of some outdoor gadgets and items to keep your gear ready when out on the hike or camp or make the experience more palatable! On the wall on the left side is a good variety of bags - packs and sleeping bags. Over on the other side is Thule racks and some cycling related paraphernalia. In the centre is all clothing and jackets! The difference between REI and Cabella's is REI in my opinion caters to the hiker- camper- cyclist while Cabella's market's to the hunter- fisherman - boater. Sure both groups could be sporting a beard but there are somewhat fundamental differences in the species! Great Gear, great selection and reasonably priced! read more

I came in for a OXO can opener I saw online. After shopping around, I decided to get a book and a few other items. I waited in line for a very long time and when I was finally at the register the man ringing me up told me I couldn't buy the can opener without being a member. Love this place. I could seriously go in debt with REI. They're products are great quality and they have a great guarantee to back it up. Every time we have been in we found what we wanted and received great service. Before leaving Charleston my husband found a pair of shoes on clearance in his size. Worried they might be gone before we got there, he called and was able to have them held for him. This is my go-to place for all things outdoor, whether it be socks or packs or hats or pants or shoes. This store is about 25 minutes from my house so it is not too inconvenient for me to hop over whenever I need to. My favorite feature of REI is the help...the people who work there and their level of expertise in their various areas. It is good to be able to consult with someone on a day pack who knows day packs from experience, or someone on hiking boots who knows hiking boots from experience. Rarely have I run across someone at REI whom I felt didn't have a strong knowledge/experience base from which to draw. My other favorite feature of REI is selection. There is a fairly strong selection of products to choose from in the stores and a very strong selection to choose from at REI.com. Online opens up a whole new world of options. My most favorite feature of REI is the annual dividend that you get each March. The amount depends on how much you have spent on qualifying purchases throughout the previous year. I just got mine in the mail. It is always a treat to get it because it is like getting free money to go and spend at REI! If you aren't a co-op member yet (one time fee, don't remember how much, but not much, like $25 or something), become a member today. There are perks and you'll get the membership money back the first year easily. read more

I called looking for a pair of snow boots, we both hopped onto a computer, he told me some numbers, I typed them into the website and boom. I saw what I needed. I drive there, only to see they don't have the black I wanted, BUT IT GETS BETTER! Bill, the excellent person he is, gave me the shpeel on the shoes and their differences. And showed me these other black boots that were totally more my style anyway. But he also was just really cool and knowledgeable and I've gotta be honest w that type of human kindness (and TOTAL patience) I sat there for entirely too long trying to figure out which ones I wanted. Despite there being a total of 5 people in the store (two of which were at the register) and at least 5 sales people in the floor no one was available to help me. I literally stood there waiting for two sales people to finish their conversation so I could ask for help- they didn't even notice. When someone finally came over because another couple had to go to the register to get help, I asked where the item was because it was shown as being available via the REI website, the sales person said "we don't have it and I'm not sure when we will get it". So, I went up front to ask again because the website showed I could purchase it and it would be ready for pick up by 12:45. The manager sent the same salesperson to find it and guess what... he found it. The sales people seemed too involved in their own stuff to deal with customers. I have shopped at REI for many years --many reasons for that: staff is friendly and many have been there for a long time. You can build a relationship and trust. No one ever makes you feel "dumb" but they communicate and educate effectively. I have had excellent customer service from the bike shop. I work with international graduate students who are new to the US. One of the guys I am helping purchased a bike and the handlebars were loosening as he was riding it between his apartment and campus. We went to REI to see if we could get help in adjusting his bike because he did not have the proper tools here with him. We met Jeremy who I can't say enough great things about! He introduced himself to us and took care of this student's bike, explaining to him about the adjustments and why he was doing what he was doing. He ensured that the bike was in good working order by taking a test drive through the parking lot and offered to let the student do so as well. He asked him if he had a helmet for safety and told him to get back in touch if he had any further problems or concerns. A++. When we left, my student said he never expected to receive that level of service and care. I moved to Greenville from Seattle so I have been an REI fan from way back. There's an R.E.I. in Greenville now, so you don't have to drive to Atlanta to get your gear on. REI, if you haven't seen it before, is an outdoor activity outfitter, jam-packed with high-tech sporting equipment. In fact, it's OOZING high tech. There is something here for every kind of outdoor activity you could want, whether it's day hiking, mountain biking, kayaking, camping, snow boarding, mountain climbing, spelunking, or just the occasional cow tipping. REI offers a very wide selection of products. For example, if you are into hiking, you'll find footwear, all manner of outdoor clothing, hiking staves, wide mouth Nalgene bottles, back packs, Camelbak and Osprey hydration bags, Katadyn water filtration devices, Suunto and Brunton compasses, GPS devices, National Geographic topographical maps, plus anything else you'd care to put into a backpack or butt pack such as their outstanding REI Stormproof matches (see "REI Match Test" on Youtube), a Light My Fire Swedish firesteel, various and sundry knives, first aid kits, flash lights, rain gear, dehydrated foods, Gerber folding saws (in case you get your arm caught under a boulder), and more. I guess you could say they've got just about anything you'd care to have to make your encounter with Nature as safe and comfortable as possible. The Greenville location appears to offer items in the same categories as the Atlanta store, but it looks like it offers fewer items. They have city and mountain bikes, for example, but you'll see maybe ten here whereas Atlanta has scores of them. The staff seems helpful and knowledgeable. If there is a down side to this chain, I'd say it is the high prices. If you are a comparison shopper, you may find many of the items in this store are overpriced, and you may find them cheaper at other venues in Greenville or online. They want you to pay $20 to become a lifetime REI member to take advantage of sales, but the discount isn't that much--it's something like 10%. Yawn. I'm not certain, but I suspect R.E.I. stands for Really Expensive Items. However, if you take advantage of sales, this would be a good place to shop for that special someone, that recreational outdoorsman, boy scout, an admirer of the TV show Dual Survival, or that doomsday survivalist in your life holed up in a cave. read more

There were only 2 other customers there at that time and several employees. Store just opened. I stood at the bikes. Asked at the counter if someone was working that section. He pointed to someone talking to another customer. I went over and stood near him. Not even a nod or "I'll be with you in a minute." Nothing. So I went to Trek and bought my $500.00 bike from them.
