Retina Associates is an excellent group practice; each of the physicians and all of the techs are…read morehighly competent. We have experienced their capacity for empathy and for providing clear explanations. My husband has Type II diabetes. He started having difficulty with his vision which had always been excellent nearly three years ago. At first he thought it was just age-related near vision loss that can make reading and using a computer difficult. An excellent Winchester optometrist, Dr. Michael Dieboldt, OD, closely examined my husband's left retina, and disturbed by what he saw, referred him to Retina Associates on the Valley Health campus in Winchester. Jason Ruggiero, MD, attended Brown University as an undergraduate, attended Medical School at New York University, interned at Yale's St. Raphael Hospital, was a resident at the University of California at San Francisco and studied at the Schier Eye Institute, University of Pennsylvania, was the first to examine and diagnose my husband's condition: retinal branch vein occlusion. Dr. Ruggiero explained what was happening, that the retinal damage cannot be cured, but it can be carefully monitored and treated so the swelling and seepage from the blocked blood vessels is controlled. The condition must be carefully monitored and treatment adjusted as indicated. What was once an intractable conditon that ultimately led to blindness can be managed and what remains of the vision can be preserved. Because so many seniors in the Shenandoah Valley region have Type II diabetes, Retina Associates treats many patients and at times, the waiting room can be quite full because a staff member may be called in by the Winchester Emergency Room physicians after a shooting or serious eye injury. Of course, these are unpredictable situations and patients need to be aware that they can occur. One additional point, my husband or I have been seen by every member of the physician team at Retina Associates, and all of the techs and nurses have been excellent. It is important to realize that this is a team, and teams have to function well together in order to provide optimum care to patients. After well over two years, if I could give this team a 10-rating, I would. They are a superb health care team.

I believe that the doctor who repaired a retinal tear for me did a good job. His personality has…read morebeen difficult to deal with however. In my first visit he told me I was "a terrible patient" (his words exactly). At my subsequent visits, his manner has been fast and icy cold. Zero bedside manner. He announced I had Macular degeneration, and when I gently enquired about it, he was dismissive, in a hurry, and very touchy. Avoid him. The woman doctor I had once when he was away was gentle, no pain whatsoever.

It's a no-stress environment. You're not "just another patient charge". The front staff is knowledgeable, respectful, quick. Care: The technology in the clinic is top notch, state-of-the art. The rooms are clean, equipment well maintained. Dr. Na's beside manner is excellent. She takes the time to listen to your concerns, maintains a level of curiosity to narrow down your issue, and is clear with her instructions. She knows what she's talking about, and the confidence she portrays makes you feel so much at ease. These are your eyes, after all. As a physician, patients often ask me for recommendations of where I would go or where I would send my family. For both those questions, it's Nova Advanced Eyecare with Dr Na. Side note: the main door to her building is NOT under the large sign on the side of the building, but rather on the left side lot when facing the sign from the street.

She has a calm and professional demeanor and always takes time to explain the procedure as I ask a lot of questions. The office is modern and lovely and the receptionist is always happy to help, which is often not the case in my experience. Highly recommend. Thank you, Dr Na for improving my dry eye symptoms and the appearance of dark spots on my face.

This review is SPECIFICALLY for Dr Michael Sommerfield…read more Dr Sommerfield performed cataract surgery on me at the Surgery Center in Cumberland Md. He seemed nice but is another Dr seeing wayyyy to many patients and in a hurry. I advised both him, and the anesthesiologist several times prior to my surgery... right up to 5 mins before being wheeled into surgery...THAT I HAD AWAKENED BEFORE DURING ANOTHER SURGERY, and did not want that to happen again. Everything acknowledged that they understood, but yet, I became VERY ALERT during the first cataract surgery to the point I recall enough that the nightmares won't stop. I'm also now on a new anxiety medicine thanks to the whole experience. Dr Sommerfield was advised of the possibility that I could wake up/become fully alert as was the anesthesiologist five mins prior to rolling me into that ER. Instead of giving it a few mins to see if the anesthesia would be effective he jumped right in with no consideration for the patients prior medical history. UNACCEPTABLE. Had he waited 2/3 mins I'd be sleeping at night instead of reliving that horror everytime I close my eyes. THREE MINUTES WAS JUST TO LONG TO WAIT TO SEE IF ID STAY ASLEEP AND NOT BE TRAUMATIZED AGAIN. Dr and anesthesia BOTH were aware PRIOR, but in a hurry to chase that $ you disrespected and disregarded my physical and mental well being....Remember me? I was your patient, but absolutely never again.
