Squatter's Arms Hotel - Wet stuff

Squatter's Arms Hotel

The Squatters Arms was once a titty bar, but no more. Paul the charming fellow behind the bar may…read morewell show you his boobs, but I'd be a bit slow to ask him; I'd wait until he offered, and since it was such a cold day in Hell you may decide it's something worth peeking at - otherwise - look some place else for that sort of thing because somehow the Squatters has managed to remain poker machine free and old school bar wise - one of the few and totally kick ass because of it. What an eclectic bar it is - they have a Facebook page, the Karaoke is on Wednesday night, Red Uncensored and Terri-Louise Kelly may be reciting poetry on one night a month along with plenty of other local poets and there are bands on a Thursday and Sunday night. You can get nosh a la pub for around ten dollars, nothing too fancy but it will fill your guts and the locals will fill your head full of fun stories and strange sayings. This is an old school pub with a decent drive through and a pretty good car park. There is an outdoor area for the smokers and you would go a long way to find such an easy going and chilled out venue that deals in rock and roll as well as poetry. I quite like it because it hasn't got trendy, and it is not trying to get trendy. Who needs to be trendy when you have all the poets in Adelaide massing in the back room and waxing lyrical every few weeks - that says it all. Ever met a poet in a pub who didn't have a full glass and an eye for another?

I have to say though Paul has done wonders and I'm very pleased to have been associated with him in the days of live music at Brompton in the House of Bedlam. Paul is destined for great things and when I last visited the Squatters I could see that it is and will always be a very popular venue for Adelaide's live music and I'm sure national live music. Possibly international.... So well done Paul.

However the Excelsior has on various occasions impressed me. They have an imaginative menu and excellent quality of food. The familiar mural of, a nearing two story Ghost who walks, which had been the pubs call sign and claim to fame was no where to be seen! In place of the timeless artwork (no doubt worshipped my many a drunkard) was a drab and uninspired shade of apricot covering the entire building. Needless to say it has taken me the better part of a box of tissues to dry my eyes from this travesty.....but, one must not dwell when there is Yelping a foot! The Excelsior is a pub in two for me. The front of house is a sports/casual bar, that has seen its fair share of colourful characters. The recent facelift to the entire interior has definately helped a great deal, but to be honest it is a case of a pub, is a pub, is a pub. The back half is your typical family eatery that is blessed with the presence of the bright lights and melodic tones of an extensive Pokie area (only a little sarcasm there). The major change of late is the added emphasis of Meat on the menu and in the marketing, always a good thing if you ask me! For me, The Excelsior, even when it did have it's famous graphic on the side of the building, was never a pub that I went out of my way to visit. The nuts and bolts have improved a lot in the last year so if you do enjoy a cold Pint and a decent hunk of cow with then jump on board! Moooo. P.S. Pub closing hours may be earlier or later depending on patronage, but being in a residential area early morning ragers are out of the question!

I guess it happened to be that I didn't actually spend all that much time wandering about back then. Anyway, this pub isn't bad, and in fact, it is one of those back street pubs. However, despite it being located in the back streets, there wasn't much in the way of nice beers on tap. Still, other than that this pub isn't too bad.

The renovations look great and even the female bathroom was lovely and spacious and lots of mirrors... The food was good and nice size servings. As a starter we had the mustard seed and parmesan bread and that was delish... I had the crab pasta for the main which was a little different to the usual ones I've had. It was in a diablo sauce which I have never tried before and had a strong chilli flavour which I don't mind a bit of but that was a little over powering. My friend had the steak which was served on mash but she said she felt like it needed a green veggie in there but I think that us something you can order as a side dish. She had asked for it to be cooked medium but I think it came out more med-well done. Overall a nice restaurant food wise but they did take a long time to clear our plates away after we had finished and a few little things I asked for like a wedge if lemon, never made it to our table then we had asked to see the dessert menu and they had forgotten so had to ask again. Attention to detail please... It's another restaurant in the entertainment book so great value.

Mind you, despite the fact that this pub has been around for ages, I have rarely been inside, but that is probably because it does happen to be an old man's pub with a rather limited beer selection. They've obviously undergone their own transformation and revamps recently as a lot of the fittings seemed fresh, clean and up to date. The dining room layout was good and flowed quite well. Coming into the main bistro entrance theres a "to be seated" point where a waiter hands you menus and points you to the right direction on where to find yourself a table. The meal ordering counter was right next to this. So it's very easy to find your way once walking in. The menu I didn't find was very vast. They're huge on their Steaks as it seems. A section of the menu was devoted to them. Aside from that- usual pub fare with Schnitzels, Seafood, starters etc. Some key favourites I feel were missing off the menu, or perhaps I feel they could've got a little further with menu options. The salad bar I was quite impressed with. They had a good selection of colds along with the hot choices. Colds included things like pasta and potato salads, coleslaw, a corn salad. That's all I'm remembering. The hot side had things like roasted potatoes and carrots, potato bake, veggie bake, steamed broccoli and cauliflower. Couple things they also had for choice which I hadn't seen anywhere else was a stir fry noodles and fried rice, which was quite delicious- full of flavour!! My group ordered a cheesy garlic bread and plain garlic bread for starters. They were quite impressive for the small price we paid. Plain garlic bread was $3 and seemed like a full generous serving at that price. The cheesy version was a couple dollars more but just as impressive. In the end my group went with pub favourites- Schnitzels with gravies. They were also quite impressive I found, especially after the entree and salad bar bites. The chicken was nicely crumbed, breast not too thin and not too thick, and is probably one of the best ones I've had! The Porterhouse Schnitzel was huge, which is usually no surprise really, but this one seemed to go the extra mile!! Only tiff was perhaps the sauce could've been a more generous serving, but I feel these small ramicans are usually a thing in pubs. The Hampstead Hotel was well received by us. Felt very comfortable and welcomed by the friendly bar and waiting staff. Will definitely be returning and would highly recommend for a cozy, casual, easy and filling pub meal.

Ok, maybe I'd throw in the word comfort too, for this hotel had the most comfortable bed of my entire two week trip. Yup, I was as snug as a little joey in his mother's pouch. I swear this experience was just like taking a trip to a spa, and it had me crying, "Why can't my carpets at home be this awesome!" Finally, the location of this one rocks!! I had come by at Christmas at it was closed, but it wasn't until I returned to Adelaide that I had the opportunity to stick my head in through the doors, and I admit that I was pretty impressed. The one thing about Adelaide is that outside of the city centre there aren't many craft beer bars, so this one basically bucks the trend. In a way it is actually pretty cool, and rather trendy, for where it is located, especially considering some of the other bars in walking distance. There are some pretty cool beers on tap, and a decent beer garden out back as well. However, the thing that stands out is definitely the charm.

I'd heard it was under new management and the menu had a stack of vegan options on it. So we made a booking. Inside is cute, like your grandma is cute when she puts on a new designer frock. There's no mistaking the Lady Daly is a pensioner but damn, she's a total GILF. I ordered the zucchini fritters, my mates ordered burgers and we got sides of veggies and chips. This is better than pub food, it's made with the same love your cute, newly crocked grandma makes food with and Mandy (the owner/manager) served us like we were her only guests that night (but we totally weren't - this place is pumping on a Saturday evening). Next time you're going to a show at the Entertainment Centre, passing by on your way to the city or just hanging around on Port Rd, drop in for a drink and dinner.
