Extremely disappointed with this experience. We paid $300 (the lady on the phone reassured us this is nonrefundable but will be used on the operation if we proceeded) for a consultation that would b , waited over 30 minutes past our appointment time, and then the consult lasted only about two minutes. The doctor said she was not comfortable performing the procedure, even though photos had already been reviewed beforehand -- so I'm not sure why we were even scheduled and charged. We were told the surgery would cost between $600-$1200 and that the $300 consultation would be applied toward the operation. Afterward, they went back on that and said the consultation would not count. Then we received an estimate for $1800, which effectively cancels out the original $300 they said would be credited. This felt misleading and dishonest from start to finish. I would not trust their pricing or their promises. read more

Here is a review from my wife Monica: Dr. Given is a phenomenal dermatologist, physician and human being. Her clinical expertise is outstanding, as evidenced by her top tier training at Yale and UCSF. She also has experience with different skin tones. I have brown, sensitive skin, so I've had bad experiences with practitioners who use a one-size-fits-all approach and don't understand the nuances of my skin type. Dr. Given went through all the data with me about which approaches would best suit my skin type, clearly indicating the rationale, evidence and risks with each treatment. She performed a laser treatment on my face and I had stunning results. Up until recently lasers were contraindicated on darker skin because of concern for hyperpigmentation, and even now should only be done by the most experienced dermatologists. Dr. Given prepped my skin for weeks ahead of the treatment and used new products for healing after the laser treatment that drastically reduced my recovery time. She explained her extensive rationale for the laser settings she used and followed up carefully post-procedure, texting me every few days to check on my skin was healing and adjusting my skincare regimen as indicated. As a reference point, I am a physician myself and rarely give the highest possible rating to my own providers, as it is very difficult to find someone who excels in clinical expertise, technical skill, listening skills, patience and thoroughness. My time with Dr. Roy and the RefinedMD crew has been incredible. I'm sharing this because I was terrified before surgery, unsure if I'd picked the right surgeon, so I'm hoping this will help someone who is feeling that way. Social media makes it hard to distinguish between a 'famous' surgeon and a truly skilled one. I found Dr. Roy on a random Facebook find. Despite that random start, I felt immediately comfortable with him during my first consultation. He understood my goals immediately and he explained the process and expectations clearly. Still, I worried if "comfortable" meant "the best," but after two other consultations, no one else compared. He didn't upsell me on a lip lift, full face lift or upper eye blepharoplasty, which I appreciated. So we agreed on a neck, lower face, and brow lift. For context: I'm 55 and felt my neck looked 70, even though my face passed for early 40s (I was told ;-)). I felt like I didn't need a lot of work on my face. Hence, I was scared of looking "overdone" or worse than before. Dr. Roy is incredibly skillful - I am stunned by the results. My husband even says I look younger than on our wedding day 17 years ago! The result is so natural. I just look like my old self. The team (including Christine & Alex) is genuinely kind--not just "customer service" nice. Beyond his skill, the care was personal. In 2021 I was severely burned at RefinedMD and have permanent scars from it. I have waited to post this because of trauma and not wanting the backlash from RMD. I had Ulthera done on my full face and neck at Refined MD. I have had this done before at my former derm office in SF with great success. (To be clear I have had countless lasers and microdermaplasions and facials etc performed on my face/body at various clinics across the Bay Area with no ill effects). I really wanted to target my upper lip and forehead. RefinedMD insisted on the full face which included the neck (even though I really didn't need any neck support). I was forced to prepay the ~$2k. During the treatment, I asked where the upper lip wand was and they said that they did not have it - and I said that was the only reason I was there. She left the machine and went and got the manager and they said they were sorry and would give me a discount off a FUTURE service. I had a gut feeling to leave but I had already paid, so I stayed. Im not sure if it was an older unserviced machine, or if the tech really didn't know what she was doing but I was severely burned on my neck on both sides of my thyroid. During the exam I was smelling burning and I kept telling her - and she said she didn't smell it (she was masked due to covid protocols). That night of the procedure I started to blister all over my neck - the blisters just kept coming out, I called the RefinedMD emergency line and no one answered and no one called me back. I was in so much pain I applied ice and ice water consistently to just keep the burning sensation down. Upon reading on the Ulthera site - it clearly stated to not use the laser near the thyroid area. The next day RefinedMD called me and asked me to come in, there was no way I could drive the 45min to the office. I was swollen like a balloon on my neck. I missed a week of work, and was in pain for months. I went in to the office the following week and they accused me of leaving something on my neck and that was why I burned - which is a. Not true and b. Their responsibility to wash the neck. It was at that meeting that Dr S told me I WOULD NOT SCAR. Even though these were serious burns. It's been 3 years, I am scarred in 2 places on my neck. They treated the scars for a year - I would have to take a day off of work to go up and get laser treatments on the scar - for no charge. After the year ended, they said "that completes our treatment". And here I am 2 years later with life long scars. Dr S is a sweet man, the cat Botox is adorable and most of the people there are pretty nice. However, the way this office is run and the training of the techs leaves people with scars and trauma. Further, I am challenged to get full face treatments now because I break out into anxiety at every office I try to go to. It's hard to get accountability at derm practices in the Bay Area. Maybe be ok looking your age, maybe choose really carefully. I would not use this place going forward. read more

Came in for my first session of PRP for my scalp. My overall experience was awesome. The entire team from front desk to medical staff are genuinely very compassionate and professional. It's not like other facilities where the staff is "fake nice" with "phony personalities". Everyone really works in harmony together and you can tell that they really care for all of their patients. They are high quality people. So in terms of the process, the medical side of things was really cool. I did PRP with Vitti pure as I hear it is more effective compared to just PRP alone. Dr. Swengel is amazing. I live in Walnut Creek and found it too difficult to travel to Los Gatos but honestly couldn't find an office that was better than refined. All of the other facilities I spoke to really didn't seem very confident in the PRP the services they were providing. It's such a new procedure so I definitely wanted to go to somebody who knows what they are doing. I definitely got that with refined MD. PRP STEPS: 1. Draw blood from arm 2. Mix/ dry blood to get the plasma 3. Mix plasma with vitti pure 4. Inject cocktail to head The process felt strange on my head. But the pain wasn't bad. Definitely worth it. They also had a cooler that blew cold air out while the doctor was injecting which was nice. Hopefully this works after 4 sessions.
