Red's Hot Chicken Been on a roll of spots I wanted to try recently. I have always heard good things about reds but never made it over there. Finally had time at lunch today! Showed up 5 min before they even opened and there was already a line! A good sign that what you're about to have is awesome. I debated the dirty bird sandwich but needed it to be a little less messy so go the Crunchwrap in HOT. It has pimento Mac and cheese, pickles, bacon and comeback sauce inside. I have a higher heat tolerance than probably 98% of the population but man the HOT is up there. It's a pleasant heat, not anything crazy but if you're the average person I think mild or medium would be just fine. The flavors all work together really well. My only nit pick and totally just a personal preference would've been a little more grilled tortilla and cut in half. But that's irrelevant to taste. Staff was friendly and welcoming, seating area is kind of half inside/half out with an inside bar area. First meal after landing in Nashville? Hot chicken of course. I love this dish, having visited some of the classics (Prince's, Bishop's), the newcomers (Hattie B's), and the decidedly non-Nashville Hot Chicken joints (Dave's is probably the most well known, but plenty of others. Shout out to Hancock in Grand Rapids, my favorite outside of Nashville). I'm obviously not as experienced as a native Nashvillian, so I thought I'd try expanding my repertoire this time around, starting with Red's. This restaurant is essentially a small shack with only outdoor counter seating - not a great situation for a freezing cold and snowy Friday early afternoon! Luckily the bar next door (per the bartender, the oldest in Tennessee) allows customers to eat inside where it's much warmer. I visited at 1PM and there was no line at the time. I especially love how the restaurant has an electronic sign hanging from the ceiling stating the estimated wait time for fresh hot chicken. It displayed 15-20 minutes when I ordered and I found it pretty accurate because my pager rang 17 minutes later. Note: I didn't realize going in that Red's doesn't serve bone-in chicken, only tenders and boneless thighs. Hot Chicken Plate ($16.50) - This includes two boneless thighs, fried and seasoned to perfection, with the smoky smell of cayenne and paprika drifting out from the takeout box. They have good, consistent breading all around. The skin is rendered well, and while some fatty parts remain, the rest keeps moisture contained in the meat, allowing plenty of juices to drip out while taking large bites. The breading is very consistent, almost a singular width all throughout the surface of the thighs. It's somewhat resistant to shearing off, but when detached, it comes off in sheets. It's fried to an excellent almost crunchy consistency. The seasoning is exemplary. It first starts sweet and salty before evolving into a pleasant heat with a slight hot sauce vinegar tang. It's a phenomenally balanced flavor. At medium spiciness, it's not bad at all, topping out only with a little sweat and a warmth that spreads through the entire mouth. It's a really nice heat level to allow the rest of the flavors and spices to register. I think I definitely could have gone up one spice level, but better safe than sorry! (5/5) A plate comes with two sides. For the first, I went with the seasoned fries. These are crinkle cut fries that are dusted liberally with seasoning salt. They aren't fried that hard so come out a little soft and floppy. Meh. I'd probably skip the fries in the future. (3/5) For the second side, I went with the mac & cheese, which is quite nice. It's super creamy and is mixed with plenty of pimento cheese to give warmth and extra tangy and rich flavor. The macaroni itself isn't cooked too far after al dente, so there still some solid texture there. (5/5) Overall, a single plate is enough to serve two people, at least persons of my stature. I ate a little less than half of the meal and was stuffed afterwards! This visit placed Red's clearly on top of all the other hot chicken joints I've tried in Nashville in the past. And even after visiting a couple other places on this trip, I think it' still safe to say that Red's is my favorite. I'll have to do some more comparisons next time I'm in Nashville - unfortunately a lot of other recommended places were closed during my time in the city. This is the place for Nashville Hot Chicken. Between the texture, flavor, and overall package, Red's is the place to stop for NHC. It's located right near the Parthenon area and is semi-connected to a bar. Check their hours before you go since it seemed like they are mostly lunch hours-oriented. The cashier and service was friendly. It took about 15 minutes for our food to be ready and we were able to take it and eat inside in the adjacent bar. The hot chicken flavor is excellent! So much flavor and I loved the texture of the chicken. It looks like they pound-out the thigh a little bit to make it thinner, which makes the bites equal and uniform where you get a perfect amount of skin (that stays intact) and meat. The seasoning is insanely flavorful! The mac and cheese was the best I've had in the city. The pimento flavor shines through and the overall texture/consistency of the cheese was spot-on. I went with a "hot" spice level for my sandwich and handled it just fine, although I was warned that it was "very" hot. Decades of eating Mexican peppers and salsas have probably turned by stomach into iron. It was pleasantly hot but not crazy hot. The sandwich combo comes with slaw and pickles on the chicken and it is a sloppy, wonderful mess. It is absolutely delicious. First, you walk into the open air shed and you review the menus on the wall next to and above the windows. Once you've determined what you would like to order, you stand in front of the window on the right. When the window opens, you place your order. If you order their "Hot" you will be warned that it is very spicy. Personally, I Love their "Hot." It delivers the flavor and heat I want when eating Hot Chicken. It's so tasty and it's just enough to make your nose run a bit! I always want coleslaw on my hot chicken sandwich, so the Hot Chicken Sandwich here is perfect. It comes with 2 Tenders, coleslaw, pickles, and Comeback Sauce. It's served with a large portion of wonderfully seasoned crinkle cut fries. Honestly, all their sides here are very good. But, my favorite side is the Pimento Mac & Cheese. I can boldly say that, in my humble opinion, this is the best Mac & Cheese in Nashville. For sure. After you pay (I believe this is a cashless operation) you have the option to take your food to go or to have it delivered to you in Springwater next door. I'm not even sure who first told me about Red's Hot Chicken, but I'm glad they did. It's a little shack -- totally nondescript -- with no real seating and just a walk-up window next to one of Nashville's oldest bars (which dates back to the Prohibition era). When you order, they tell you upfront how long it'll take, and in our case, it was about 30-35 minutes. Later, the wait stretched closer to an hour, but honestly, it was worth every minute. There wasn't much of a line outside, which was misleading because they clearly had a ton of orders queued up inside. We ordered the medium chicken strips and the crunch wrap -- and both were absolutely incredible. Easily one of the highlights of our weekend in Nashville. It's the definition of unassuming: simple setup, no frills, just amazing food. Grab a casual beer next door or hang out while you wait. When we went, there was a huge arts-and-crafts event going on behind the restaurant with thousands of people, so I imagine on a normal weekend the wait would be shorter. The 45-minute wait gave us time to hoof it over to the Parthenon. Kudos to them for getting the wait time right. The family found some seating in Nashville's oldest bar next door. I ordered the Southern Dirty Bird sandwich, with comeback sauce, pimento cheese and two fat medium-heat tenders. I like heat, and the medium provided plenty. It was massive. While getting takeout to enjoy at the park would not be a bad idea, there is an even more intriguing way to enjoy this meal. Springwater, Tennessee's oldest bar, is right next door and the chefs are more than happy to bring the food over to go alongside a cold draft beer. We've visited this chicken shack twice now on recent visits to Nashville and will keep coming back! The chicken crunchwrap is unique and delicious! I like to get tenders and mac and cheese separately just so it's easier to take the leftovers to go. We tried the seasoned fries on this last visit and those were great too. Some were slightly too salty for my taste, but they were hot and crispy. The service is straightforward and pretty quick for being made to order. There's an area to wait and to eat inside under their overhang, as well as at the bar next door. Was in the neighborhood and had been wanting to try Red's. If I'm not mistaken, as a native Nashvillian, this is the location of the old Hog Heaven BBQ place next to Centennial Park. It did not disappoint. Had the Dirty Bird Sandwich with fries. Watch "Nik Metcalf Food Reviews" if you want an HD video review of what I had - I even ate it in the car (while creeping along I-65 during rush hour) like he did. Great flavor, large portions, and the Medium spice level was comfortably hot, which I like. The only downside was the side of ranch dressing - straight from a bottle and not homemade - I'd skip it next time and stick with the Comeback Sauce. Be prepared to wait 20-30 minutes once you place your order, as everything is cooked to order, and get there early enough before they run out of chicken. I placed my order at 3pm on a Friday and they only had 25 chicken tenders left for the day and were already out of thighs. Side note: It never ceases to amaze me how some people stand in line for 10 minutes reading the simple menu board in front of them, yet when they step up to order and are asked "what heat level, what sides, etc." they look around and ask what the choices are. SMH The best part may be the attached dive bar where you can shoot pool, listen to music, and enjoy $4-$6 draft beers while you wait - including my favorite Yazoo Dos Perros. Really good food. I arrived at 4:45pm on Saturday and they were out of thighs so I went with the deal of three chicken tenders and two sides. I chose fries and pimento mac & cheese for the sides. I'm not normally a chicken tenders guy, but these were the best tenders that I've ever had. The sides were good too. I especially liked the fries; they had a seasoning with a kick to it. The food was really good. I removed a star for a few minor reasons. Red's is takeout only. They have about four outdoor tables, but they were all taken so I had to eat standing up. It takes a long time to make the food. My order took 20 minutes, but it can take 45 minutes during peak times. Luckily, I didn't come during a busy time. The restaurant is across the street from a park where a bunch of homeless people were roaming around and some kids were asking for money. As I've been saying in most of my reviews from my Nashville trip so far, on the whole, I had so many great meals there... but of course, I had to go for some Nashville Hot Chicken, and this place near Vanderbilt's campus came highly recommended. I am happy to say, it was phenomenal! Red's is quite simply a roadside chicken shack. They have a small outdoor covered eating area with counter seating around the edges, everything is served take-out style no matter where you plan to eat it. There is a bar next door that they'll bring your food to, but I didn't explore that, it was a fairly nice day to just eat right out front. I approached the window and my order was promptly taken, no non-sense, no fuss, they're just interested in getting you great chicken made fresh. This IS NOT fast food, and they express that on their sign, but regardless, I waited just 15 minutes for piping hot, made to order, hot chicken. I went with the Hot Chicken Plate with the 3 jumbo tenders, as they were currently out of thighs due to a power outage that spoiled their last supply. That mattered exactly not at all, because the tenders were enormous, juicy, and very filling with a perfect level of spice. I went medium to gauge, and it was just right for me. Flavorful, good heat, not excruciating. The plate came with two sides, I opted for their pimento mac n cheese and cole slaw. The mac was exceptional, really nice sharp cheddar flavor, very creamy. The cole slaw was refreshing and cool, not too mayo heavy, and provided a nice switch to the hot chicken. I also got some great ranch for dipping. It also came with a couple slices of white bread, as is tradition, for mopping up sauce and making little bite size sammies. All told, I could not recommend this place more. I love a place that just cuts to the chase with great food, and Red's is exactly that. We were there at opening and we ordered the snack box, the mac and cheese, and a hot chicken tenders. The mac and cheese was chunks of the hot chicken mixed into their standard mac and cheese, but it was drowning in their house sauce, which was rather unappetizing. I could finish it but I'm not really a sauce person to the extent that the mac and cheese was suggesting I should be. The hot chicken is juicy and tender and the seasoning on the fries were good. The main downside is the fries are probably factory made crinkle cut fries which detracts from their quality -- too crunchy for my tastes. I am and have always been a Crunchwrap guy. Don't get me wrong, I love burgers and tacos as much as the next person, but I mean business when I say that I like Crunchwraps. In some parts of the world, I might even be known as the Crunchwrap Commander. So when I tried the Crunchwrap here, I was both shocked and appalled. First of all, this Crunchwrap doesn't have a crunchy tortilla - instead, it gets its crunch from the crispness of the fried chicken. Secondly, this has mac 'n' cheese, and the closest thing to a pile of shredded lettuce is the occasional pickle. All of that to say, this was glorious. As much as I missed biting into a cheap, crispy corn shell tortilla, the chicken made up for it. Also, when they say "hot" in terms of spice level, they mean reaper. I didn't try the Nashville Fire, not because I was scared for my life or didn't have a spare change of underpants with me, but because I was starving and wanted to make sure I could finish my food rather than compete with parts of my body to see which would cross the finish line first. If you can handle some serious heat, I recommend the Hot level. If you find other hot chickens on the spicy end, maybe try Mild. Use this information to your own discretion. The mac 'n' cheese was extremely impressive. Ooey-gooey madness with extreme flavor that helps balance all that spice. There was so much flavor in my first few bites that I was scared the comeback sauce ($1 extra) wasn't necessary. However, I tried it, and yeah - I highly recommend adding that sauce. It neutralizes a lot of the acidity and complements the chicken without taking away from it or overwhelming the mac 'n' cheese. The Crunchwrap King will definitely be back. Yes, I did just refer to myself in the third person. Red Hot Chicken hit the spot in every way. I got the hot chicken sandwich after a night on Broadway, and it was exactly what I needed. The heat, the crunch, the flavor, it all came together perfectly. The spot is a little off the beaten path, but absolutely worth the drive. We came back here after 2 years, and my 5 star review is still holding up strong. Anything you get at Red's Hot Chicken is absolutely delicious. This is the best chicken you can get in Nashville, so much better than Prince's or Hattie B's. I loved how tender, juicy, and crispy the chicken was and the coleslaw as a side was my favorite. I liked the pimento mac and cheese, but next time I'd get another side of coleslaw. read more
