This is the third hair salon I've tried in Astoria, and I'm never going anywhere else! I came in for the first time for a walk-in blowout, and Liz did my hair. She did such a great job that I came back to her for a cut and color. Before she started, we talked extensively about what I wanted and what I liked and didn't like about the way I'd had my hair done in the past. She said, "I'd rather have a consultation take two hours than have an unhappy client!" I wanted very natural-looking, fine highlights, and Liz was incredibly meticulous. Finely weaving my hair and putting it all in the foils literally took two and a half hours. She also washed it out in sections, so none of it would get over-processed while she worked. Then, she put a toner on top of the highlights so they'd look more natural. They looked wonderful when she was finished! Liz's care and attention to detail is what keeps me coming back. Plus, she's honest about what will look good on me, which I love! I trust that she'll make my hair look great, even if I don't know exactly what I want. I can't recommend her highly enough. I went in as a blonde, asked if it was possible to change my color to light brown, and sadly walked out with dark brown-reddish hair. After an extensive consult with a senior colorist, during which I explained my hair takes to warmth very easily (and which I try to avoid), I was assured that I was going to have light brown hair with different highlights peeking through. I was shocked and devastated (hair is emotional!) to see my hair was all one color after the wash, and that color was dark dark brown. I returned the next day with hopes that they could fix it by removing some of the redness, covering the grays that were still popping through, and lighten it up. After another 3 hours in the salon chair, my grays were gone and my hair was redder but lighter in shade. All of the dimension that I wanted (and had prior to this salon) was gone. This was not an inexpensive trip. They charged me $130 for a single process color. I have been coloring my hair for years, and they covered up all of my highlights that were already there (read: Undid all the work I had paid for previously). I had to visit another salon two weeks later to do color repair (read: more $$$ to fix their expensive mistake). On a Friday I decided to treat myself with a blow out. I have really, really curly hard to work with hair but figured they must have someone. I called at around 3 and got an appointment for 4:30 Once I got there they took my coat. Then I got great service from the woman who washed my hair. Then it was time for the blowout. I am SO happy I stopped in! I only needed a minor trim/shaping, but Frank definitely breathed new life into my hair. I am on a journey to long hair, and he gave me lots of tips on how to maximize the growth process while still keeping my hair in optimal condition/shape. To top it all off, he and the rest of the staff were so incredibly warm, friendly, and personable. Had an appointment with Alex today, but upon arrival Alex said he didn't feel confident with doing my hair so he referred me to Raul. The haircut took approximately an hour forty-five and Raul was friendly and chatty. I did have a Pinterest folder of style cuts for him to choose from and try and aim towards; he did choose a style in particular but the end result was far from the target. Haha. I instead ended up with a bob and blow dry which would have been lovely, except right at the end he decided to cut the hair line from brow to ear to the length of an inch which to me looks totally odd. Even though the style was nothing like what I was hoping for, I would have been happy enough if he hadn't cut that last part which now just looks out of place. I usually pin my hair back into a French roll but because of the inch around my hair line to the side of my face, I can no longer do this. I'm am disappointed, but I do think Raul does have a decent level of skill otherwise, because the rest of the cut isn't so bad, he was just a bit off with this cut and I'm guessing his forte is not when a client brings him a photograph to replicate, his skill is probably better when he is left to his own creative devices then attempting to replicate others work. I did have a great experience with Binoh a couple of years ago, but when I tried to go back to him following that appointment, he had departed the salon. I learnt today that he has returned to work at this salon. But since this is the second out of three experiences with this salon that hasn't been great, I therefore don't think I will be returning; however I wish them all the very best. If I was rating this salon based on how friendly Frank is, I would give it 5 stars, but unfortunately I just don't feel like they really care whether the client is happy and that's what a good salon should take pride on, how the client feels upon walking out of the salon. read more

Come here for a blowout thanks to Groupon! Made an appointment, and showed up on a Sunday, but when I first got there and mentioned I had a Groupon, no one seemed to know how to deal with me. Finally one of the stylists was like - alright just give her a blowout and we'll figure out payment after! I had a bit of a communication issue at the beginning as well, as my stylist and I couldn't agree on what a blowout was. Stylist: you want a blow dry with bounce? Me: I'd like some curls at the bottom Stylist: curls you get from curling iron, that's not what a blow dry is Me: I'd like a blow out with some curls at the bottom Stylist: you requested a blow dry, do you not understand? Me: I would really like a blow out (while desperately searching on Google to show a picture of blow out hair) Stylist: (looks at picture on my phone) that's a blow dry with bounce! Me: ok! Sounds good! Then.... MAGIC HAPPENED. Oh my GOD. I have to be honest, I've only had blow outs twice in my life, but this blowout was AMAZING. Within 45 minutes I had beautiful luxurious shampoo commercial hair!!!! It was soft, it was bouncy, it was GORGEOUS. I wanted to kiss the stylist after (and tipped him obvi)! He had some pointers about what I should do with my hair (like get it cut with long layers), and I left with a bounce in my hair and in my step. Definitely a must do for parties/nights out! Saloon Salon is my favorite salon in New York. They are the only place I trust with my hair. I had a couple bad experiences in the past that were so bad that I used to cut my own hair for a while. When I moved to Queens, somebody recommended Saloon and I walked out feeling amazing. My hair texture is curly and unmanageable, so not many stylists are experts at handling it. Stacy has given me the best haircuts and blow-outs I try to schedule my hair cut/blow dry when I have something special to do that evening. I've even had her touch up my roots and she is phenomenal. I believe that all the colorists at Saloon are very skilled and well trained. I also like how they don't try to push the Redken products on you to buy them. On top of that he thinned it out 'a bit' leaving me with half the hair I had before. This nightmare cost me almost 80 bucks. As if that wasn't bad enough, the cut was so uneven that I ended up going to a different place a week later to try to fix what was left. I went to this place because it's close to where I live and my roommate liked it. However, I've gotten considerably better haircuts for less money - even in Manhattan - so this salon will definitely not see me again! I've been a loyal customer here for three years and was always very happy with the service. I had my haircut by Alex and he always did a great job so I couldn't fault him! A couple of christmas' ago I got my other half a blow dry which she was really happy with. For that reason she decided to go back and have a blow dry on our wedding day with her mum and maid of honor. She phoned to confirm the price given the length of everyone's hair prior to arriving. Then on the day an incredibly rude receptionist/manager completely changed the prices that were quoted. She didn't want to make a fuss given this was her wedding day, something the lady she spoke to was aware of. Yet still she proceeded to make the day as unpleasant as possible! The one day you don't want any stress and you get service like this? Brilliant! Then to cap it all off one of the blow drys fell out! A close friend of mine recommended this place and Selvi to me. She's always raving about her work. So I decided to check her out for myself. The first time I went in for a consultation, I was super upset because Selvi made me wait close to an hour to see her (and I had an appointment). I guess there was a mixup or her other appointments ran late. Whatever it was, when I finally got to see her, she delivered me the bad news that my hair is permanently stained with black hair dye and correcting it would be a lengthly and costly process. Which also means that I couldn't get highlights done during that visit (since it was a late appointment - 6PM). So i pretty much went in, waited an hour to have nothing done and came out disappointed to find out the truth about my hair. Two weeks passed and I decided to give Selvi another try. She deserved the benefit of the doubt since her tardiness has nothing to do with her skills as a stylist. (And I could tell that she felt bad for making me wait.) This time, I opted for a layered cut that will get rid of a lot of the dyed parts because I was worried that correcting the color would mean further damage... I figured, if I can't get rid of this (nasty) black hair, I'd try to work it somehow. =) My friend loves her work for a reason and I finally know why!! I came out of the salon feeling like a hair model!! Volumized locks that bounced happily in the wind! The thing my hair lacked most was volume and Selvi managed to give me stylish layers without making me look like a mullethead (I sh*t you not, I was always afraid of too many layers because I've seen girls with super fine straight hair like mine that look like mulletheads because of a bad cut and too many layers...) Not here!! She even took the time to show me how to style my hair with a curling iron. So, long story short =), the results really made up for the initial little mishap. I've learned to forgive and forget =). Although prices are considered moderately high, I'm a true believer that you get what you pay for and what I got was the beginning of a beautiful relationship with a top rated stylist. This never happened to me at any other hair Salon which were the lowest rated hair salons in Astoria and they turned out be way better than redken. I went in for a cut , trusted the staff on what they are doing but honestly this was a piece of shit .... I showed what I wanted but what I get was one side long and one side short. The lady who was cutting my hair quoted while cutting my left side " ohhhhhh shit" . Like she is cutting hair for the first time. Looking at her progress and work was disgusting. If you are unfamiliar its a program that donates your cut hair to cancer patients who need wigs. When you do this - you get a free hair cut to boot. Friendly service, mixed crowd of customers, pricing for my cut was around $65 which is under manhattan and high for Queens but it was the first cut I loved in a long time. Basic, overpriced, inept, and unfashionable are some of the adjectives I'd use to describe Redken Saloon Salon. I have fairly long hair for a man, so a stylish cut every few months to keep things neat and presentable is essential. Being pressed for time, I walked in looking for a quick trim. I was told my cut should be around $30, which is decent for a salon cut, well, what I thought would be a salon cut. Frank worked on me, the conversation was pleasant, albeit a little more involved than the standard stylist:patron in-chair conversation. Frank seemed more focused on our conversation than my haircut, which was unsettling, but it's a salon, what could go wrong? The bill came out to a gouging $50, reason being "I had a lot of hair", which makes no sense because I only had a trim. I argued to no avail, paid my bill, and left with a pain in my rear. Once I washed up and began to style my hair as I always do, it became painfully clear how bad this cut was. The sides above my ear were grossly uneven with the left side awkwardly sticking out like a side-headed cow-lick. Gone were the wonderful layers my typical stylist maintains, replaced with an uneven thicket of strands that oddly reminded me of our conversation; rambles followed by a short retort, followed-up by more intertwining rambles. But will my hair grow out? Yes. Am I happy? No. Will I be returning? No, This one star is for Frank, who seems like a nice guy, but he should put more focus on the job in front of him. Several months ago, I went in and asked the receptionist how much they would charge just to shave the back/sides of my head and if they could possibly charge me men's prices. (I have a short pixie cut, and I currently keep the sides/back trimmed much shorter) Alex (or his name might be Alec), came up and said he could do it for $15. I was very happy with this price, as all I wanted was to have the sides/back clipped short and I did not want to have to pay traditional women's haircut prices (which are usually $40 and up) for something super simple and easy. After my first visit, I was happy enough with the job that I came back a second time for an appointment with Alex. I wanted him to do the same thing. No fancy cut or styling. Towards the end, while he was finishing up my hair he asked if I would like the top part (which is longer) trimmed a bit. I said yes. Then when I was paying for it, the price had suddenly jumped up to $40. Now I figure that either Alex could not have offered me that special rate of $15 anymore, or saying yes to those extra cuts on the longer part of my hair made the price increase an extra $25. Either way, I should have been told. Before I even sat in the chair, he should have told me that he could no longer offer me the $15 price, or before he cut the top part of my hair he should have mentioned that it would be an extra $25. Either way, I felt taken advantage of. I'm a graduate student and as you can imagine, I don't have the ability to pay $40 for every time I want a slight cut that takes just as much effort as a men's cut. Thankfully I have found a wonderful hairdresser nearby who offers me the same thing that Alex was doing, but for only $20, even if I want the top part trimmed. And she takes more care and pays more attention to detail as well. I just don't appreciate the deception, and this place has lost my business. read more
