This is a comment for Carmen J. I found her review funny AF and felt compelled to write to her about this. Yep, I had to write this 'ish 9 years later. I'm petty. I was never paid by the salon nor the stylist to write reviews. I was a student who used part-time job money to pay for my weave and also discovered Yelp at that time and thought it was the coolest website ever (before it became this fancy app). I really had (and still have) a passion for writing and enjoy writing reviews so I kept doing it for my enjoyment. I never got paid at all for ANY review that I written on here so I just want to make that clear to you. I was an Elite twice (that was my reward) but that was it. To my defense, my experience was amazing at Salon Niquel. Niquel and Simone West (from my interaction with them) are amazing ladies. I never had any issues with them and they KNOW hair. I haven't been back since though and I know Simone West branched off to do her own thing. But I'm sorry you had a horrible experience. My opinion was just basically my opinion. Sorry that you took my opinion to Mars and felt that it was factual. No hard feelings though. I don't care what minions think but for my real Yelpers on here (who be Yelping all day and all night across the globe), the love runs deep and we, as real Yelpers, don't give AF what anyone says. After searching and searching for an affordable, black-owned salon with a website (it's almost 2010..every business should have one by now), I stumbled on Salon Niquel. I was very skeptical at first because of the salon's location in Forest HIlls but it's close to my house so I decided to try it out. I am originally from Southern California where there is a qualified hairdresser on every corner...no matter where you live. It's been years since I've been able to trust a stylist to really help me take care of my hair. I think that has more to do with the fact that I was in Ithaca for 4 years and then once I arrived in NYC didn't know where to go. I was pleasantly surprised by this salon though not as won over as Caramel C. I had an appointment with Niquel at 6pm on a Thursday so I expected I would have to wait around for while but, to my surprise, only waited for about 10 minutes before someone washed and blow dried my hair. The someone was probably 15 or 16 and not Niquel or Simone. I am pretty flexible so I didn't raise a fuss but I would not, as a businesswoman, ever feel comfortable sending a first-time customer to a loitering friend for any part of their service but that's just me. The young girl did do a good job of blowing out my hair but was a little light on the washing experience. Once I was in Niquel's chair she proceeded to flat iron and trim my hair. I could have easily done all of this (except the trim) on my own but I was just happy to finally get a trim. Niquel may be more inclined to listen to her customers once they become regulars and when she isn't in a rush to go home so I won't hold our first experience against her even though I'm a firm believer in the importance of first impressions. Overall, I was happy with the results but not so keen on the service. Pros: Competent stylists that I could potentially call my own Great products (Keracare!!!) They are hilarious...great company Didn't try to push a perm on my natural but not so manageable hair Fairly standard prices ($45+ tax for wash, blow, flat iron and trim) Near the Forest Hills LIRR and the 71st and Continental stop on the E, F, R & V Trains Cons: Less than ideal customer service (on the first visit, when it really matters) NO sanitation kits for her combs and hair clips Not sensitive about my scalp condition (I would say borderline rude though I'm sure it wasn't intentional) A little pushy on purchasing hair products Disclaimer: I am really hard on stylists and salons. I've had a number of great stylists in CA and will settle for nothing less in NY or otherwise. read more

It is a nice place with nice girls but it is not reliable. It is closed half of the time, appointments are not met so it tough to make it your salon. Hence, many of my girls had to give up going. If things change in their management style or customer service maybe it will be worth it. read more

I don't know where G.J. and Hali B. went but the Salon Niquel I know is not by far affordable nor the "shiznick"! The owner probably paid these two to leave these comments I wouldn't put it past her! If you want your money and your hair I would suggest to go elsewhere!!!!! This new Malaysian technique is the TRUTH! I am one of those black women who admittedly am addicted to my weave and unfortunately it has taken a toll on my edges. NO MORE. First the weave application took half the time and was painless! I didn't have to deal with braidAND track tightness.. I couldn't believe it. On top of all that, she sold me these hair drops that is growing my edges so quickly that I need a relaxer to calm down this mini afro forming around my edges! I recieved a sew in with lace closure and I loved my service. The price is pretty high for someone on a budget but it was definetly worth it. The view of the city is amazing I felt like a celebrity sitting in that chair, and niquel was very knowledgeable about hair she gave me different tips and her home products ( niquels hair crack lol) definitely smelt so good. She broke my budget by charging me 400 dollars when I expected to pay 300 but I love my hair and for a first time treating my self it was worth it I will recommend anyone that has the money to pay to to to her and get your hair done you will walk out smiling read more

Fake place and a scam. This person operates with various different names and locations. Before you will go to location she will tell you that she is off that day and will invite you to her private apartment. Once you are in her apartment she will intimidate you for more money and scam you with a very poor job. Wish I could give no star at all. read more

She was very helpful in helping me figure the kind of hair to get and which method would be best for me. Needless to say I am super happy with the results. They look and feel very natural. This salon is FANTANSTIC!!! I discovered Salon Niquel about 4 years ago and have never been disappointed. Everytime I leave the salon I feel BEAUTIFUL!!! First, I would like to say that the Malaysion hair weave has grown my hair TREMENDOUSLY!!! My hair started out short an thin, but now it it thickening and the length is down to my shoulder and STILL GROWING... Niquel is fantastic and gives you more than expected. so i recently went to this salon to hair my weave done. I must say it was not at all what i expected. The professionalism was less than ok and their were NO sanitation kits at all. I got the braidless weave, perm, and treatment and it came to a over $700!!!!! I called first and was given a different price than the one I was given at the salon, yes I did add on the treatment at the last minute but I highly highly doubt that would cause an almost $350 price jump. needless to say NOT the price I was expecting at all. I will say that their weaves do last and seem to hold up quite well. My advice is to get your price ahead of time for the total and bring your own combs (for sanitary purposes cause you will not see ANY barbicide in their containers.) With all this said, even with all the flaws, she can do a good weave. read more

I have been a loyal customer of Niquel for over 10 years! I had her doing fusion strand by strand extensions in my hair for about 7 years straight which I love love love. Always looked natural and didnt break my own hair off at all. Recently I switched from fusion to the malaysian hair weave done by Niquel and I also love love love it!! Also looks very natural and I buy my hair (inditress) from her also because I find that it is higher quality than I get at other hair stores and I also never have a problem with the hair knotting up or looking ratty. I am very happy with this Hair Salon and Hairstylist. First she (the owner) respected my time. I had an 11am appointment and she was on time even though it was raining like crazy outside. Secondly the custom designed wig that she installed on my head is flawless. I am a person that will pay top dollar for a quality piece, but always have a problem because my head is smaller than most and conventional wigs are one size fits most. They usually bunch up in the back and do not stay in place without Combs and pins. The wig that was made by Niquel is lightweight and free flowing. It feels and looks like a weave. It does not she'd or snag when being combed through. She also colored the wig which turned out fabulous. She is a color genius. I have had color nightmares in the past with other stylist who have colored my weaves and wigs. This wigs piece is an awesome protective hairstyle it can be worn over any hair type. I had the absolute pleasure of meeting Niquel for my hair extensions. After visiting other salons in the city that say they specialize in natural black hair I was relieved to finally come across a hair dresser in my area that does know natural black hair. I wanted my hair styled for my birthday and Niquel took her time with me and went through the process of what will be done and the texture hair I will need. I was finally relieved to find a hair dresser that was knowledgeable with dealing with natural black hair. Niquel made me feel comfortable; the time she took for me and the fact that she was a pleasure to meet a true professional with talent, skills and a keen eye for hairstyles that will match my face and the look I wanted.
