This business is part-time with the owner operating from his home with his son apprenticing. I had…read morea walk-in shower temperature mixing valve that was failing and I couldn't get the handle set screw removed to inspect it. This rounded out the Allen head socket and I informed the owner about this when I scheduled. First the good. The owner scheduled me directly for a few days out, availability was good. He kept the appointment on time and communicated that he was on his way. He is competent, experienced, and licensed with the State of Idaho. He fixed the problem by replacing the mixing cartridge but had to destroy the handle to remove it because of the set screw damage. The finish quality is good. The bad: he is not totally transparent about his pricing. When scheduling, I asked what his hourly rate was and he refused to disclose that, telling me that he prefers to work on a unit price basis and gave me an estimate of $325 for the job with a $175 call-out fee minimum. When he arrived, he determined that he would have to drill out the set screw and buy a new shower kit (head, finish nipple, faring, valve handle, and valve faring plate. At that point I should have asked him what he was going to charge for the extra work. When he was done with the job, he paused, contemplating what he was going to charge me and ended up doubling the price. He did not detail the cost of materials or time on the invoice so there is no way of knowing if he marked materials up or whether he was covering time until his next job. So, if you want a competent plumber but one who may take advantage of your situation and charge a price with a comfortable profit for him at no risk, then he is your man. I was probably overcharged (on a competitive basis) but the job was only a couple of hours so it was limited in any case.

We recently went through the process of having to replace our entire roof and got six different…read morequotes from companies. Hawaiian Built roofing was one of the companies we worked with. They were actually in our top two for who we wanted to work with. Even though we ended up not working with them I will say the biggest pro we had for them is that they communicated very well and even made modifications to the roofing quote and met with us a second time in person. The main reason we ended up not working with them was because we didn't feel like they were living up to their "apples to apples" guarantee. In the contract they gave us to look over they stated that if you could a roofing company that would do the exact same job but for less than they would refund the difference and give you a $50 gift card. I ended up getting multiple other quotes that used the same shingle, had the same process for underlayment (ice and water shield, starter shingle etc), however they were roughly $3000-$5000 less than Hawaiian, and they included the Valley Metal. I shared all of this with Saundra and they came back with Option 1 - doing the metal valley and doing ice and water shield on 100% of the house. For the same cost $35,000. Or option 2 - A traditional valley package that would reduce the price by $1500. She also offered to come over to take a more detailed look of everything, which we took her up on. After meeting with her and going over everything she told us that Certainteed was having a sale on some colors of shingles and she would look at those and get back to us. She was able to get the Certainteed in a specific color for $33,000 or the Malarkey Vista in Storm Grey for $33,000. We did some more research and learned that it's not recommended to put ice and water shield on the entire house as it can cause condensation build up if its not put in 100% correctly. We also learned that the Malarkey shingles are a better quality than the Certainteed. The Malarkey also has a better warranty overall. At $33,000 they were still $3,000 over the other company that we were considering that was going to use the Malarkey Vista. After my husband and I talked about it we decided that we didn't feel like they were standing by their apples to apples guarantee. My husband also felt like Sandra was "putting down" other roofing companies. I didn't see it as much as he did. I took what she was saying as trying to explain why their company was "better" than other companies by focusing on the fact that they don't subcontract out etc. I will say that when we told the other company that we were choosing between them and Hawaiian they said "that makes sense, they are our biggest competition." The company we chose doesn't subcontract out either, we made a point of asking and checking the contract for it. We ended up going with the other company who got us the Malarkey Vista shingle with a 50 year non prorated warranty for a couple thousand less than their original quote due to deal they were having. I wouldn't have minded working with Hawaiian Built Roofing, but wasn't willing to pay $5000 more for the same system.

Three of them responded quickly and provided in-depth project bids. I selected Chavez Roofing and Construction LLC and I'm glad I did. My house is a tall skinny with a steeply pitched roof. This project impacted not only me, but the neighbors on either side of me. Caleb and his crew had to fight with multiple demons of morning frost on the steep roof, and early sunset bringing the day to a close. The project took a bit longer than anticipated, however, each night before they left, they cleaned up the mess that inevitably lands between the houses. Caleb and crew were all polite and respectful of my neighbors and our properties. Caleb is a delight to work with. He communicates well and frequently, knows what he's talking about, and oozes sincerity and pride in his product. Oh, the 4th company? Him and his team were punctual, considerate of the mess and noise and did a phenomenal job. Even walked around with magnets to make sure my kids or dogs didn't step on a stray nail. He referred his uncle to me for house painting and he also was spectacular. At the end of the day they are good, kind, detail oriented people who have gained a massive fan. One knock on them that can't be left unsaid...he's a Pittsburgh Steelers fan. Unfortunate, but nobody's perfect lol.
