We weren't entirely sure we were going to make it for fireworks this year, but we managed to stay awake and spent about 7 hours milling around and then waiting for the fireworks. We decided to head out around 230 to Gold Medal Park. We planned on just hangin out for a few hours and then decided why not wait for the fireworks. It was a long wait, but we chose to stay.
Down by the lower part by the river we walked around and enjoyed the river view. There were tons of people claiming their spots around 230; that's commitment. There were 3-4 food trucks, a guy doing caricatures, port o johns, and just lots of people having fun and enjoying the beautiful day.
Best places to watch the fireworks:
Hill in Gold Medal Park - lots seems to gravitate there.
Lower river
Stone Arch Bridge
Lawn In Gold Medal Park. We chose this site over the other places. Easy to get in and out, right by Izzys and right by the free holiday meters.
Fireworks were great. They seemed to last only about 15 min, but it was a great light show and the finale was impressive.
Getting out of downtown Mpls, what a CLUSTER! Very few traffic directors directing traffic and for an event like this you really need it! Way too many people darting out in the street, cars blowing through lights etc. tip for next year, get me place when the hordes of people let out.
Great event. Great place to watch a great fireworks display. read more
