Strangers typically ask about my hair at least once per week and are always surprised it is color-treated. I have been a loyal fan and client of Distinctive since 2011. Whenever I am living in Arizona, I drive the extra miles (even from Flagstaff!) just to get to this Distinctive Salon location. All the stylits are SUPERB ARTISTS and I have used several, but I tend to stick with JASON who did my 1st ever highlights, which look amazing!!! JASON bridged my sun-bleached longer lengths together with my crown into a cohesive wholistic palette. Whenever I have gone to other Aveda salons for "changes" to my custom Aveda formula, I have always regretted it. So, in the past, I have used ASHLEY (the owner) to fix my color mistakes. She can work miracles and truly understands the art and science of Aveda color. If you ever have a hair disaster, I would book an appointment with Ashley. For the past year I have had the worst luck with stylists getting my Blonde Wishes to come true, when my regular gal was going through some personal struggles and wasn't available. After going to 3 local Phoenix salons, I finally tried Ide. "Try Ide!" They got the weave/foil/highlights RIGHT! Susan was very personable and did a great job. The Aveda products were very gentle on my poor abused hair, yet they brought out the bright blonde. A toner wasn't even required bc Susan got the color perfect. Yes, the lighting in the salon isn't great and the place could use a deep clean service and a fresh coat of paint, but do you want to pay $400-$500 for highlights/lowlights/cut/blowdry, or do you want to pay $100-$200? Those expensive (& pretentious) salons are making YOU pay for their high end lighting systems, new salon chairs, and nightly cleaning crew. Just some food for thought. I received The Benchmark service and I would describe it as the last word in a luxury haircut experience. First Stephany asked me how I like my hair done, then she suggested some options for styling it that I had not considered before. I quite liked her suggestions and took them. She was gentle but firm while she cut my difficult, curly hair and trimmed my beard, and I could tell she was taking her time to do the best possible job. After the trim part, she took me to a quiet back salon room where she dipped my hands in paraffin wax, then began the scalp massage and hot towel treatment. I had never experienced a paraffin-wax dip and the wax felt strange at first, but as a chef and frequent hand-washer I don't think my hands have been hydrated like that in years. The treatment that followed included a face massage, a hot towel wrapped around my face, a pleasant eucalyptus aromatherapy, a shampooing and a scalp massage, then she removed the wax from my hands and gave me a hand massage. I am happy to say that Stephany brought the same careful attention to detail to each of the services, and was both responsive and informative when it came to the styling that followed. She even helped me understand what I have so far been doing wrong in caring for my beard and made some wonderful suggestions to improve my beard's health! In summary, I do not believe I have experienced relaxation quite like I did at The Boardroom, and would recommend Stephany to anyone who might be interested in elevating a haircut experience. She was knowledgeable, professional, great at small talk, and I will be visiting again soon to request her services!

Being a once-a-month subscriber, I get to enjoy this blissful escape from reality every four weeks or so. The studio owner Kara came by my chair to visit and offer input on the overhaul of my hair, and naturally she's as sweet as pie. Don't listen to me, just make an appointment and get your hairs did! PS I just read the ridiculous bad reviews and want to point out that irrespective of what the customer experienced, the owner Kara spent hours and REFUNDED HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS to make it right and the people did not bother to edit their reviews to reflect that the problem was addressed. The keys to avoiding those situations are simple: Communicate IN FULL with your stylist, before during and after your appointment. Do not lie at the end of the appointment saying everything is fine if it isn't, because the minute you do that, YOUR integrity is in question and your complaints take on an air of bullshit when you decide to whine on Yelp.
