This coffee shop is a bit unusual in the sense that it is small. There are just few tables and high seating setup. They also offer food which I think is pretty good. I ordered a latte and a "very toasted bagel." The latte was good. I enjoyed the bagel even though other people would have returned it thinking it's burned (you don't want me making popcorn for you...). There was one person working who I think was one of the partners. He was friendly and helpful even though he could barely keep up. There's plenty of street parking, but don't come here if you think you're going to camp out for hours and do work, but rather come here if you want to spend a bit of time enjoying a friend's or wife's company... read more

The one star reviews on this place are so old and clearly not relevant anymore, this place exceeded every expectation I had. Originally planned to try Tabor Bread across the street but the line was so long and it was super overpriced, so walked in and tried this modest looking café. Prices were great. The man took our order and walked around the counter to hand us our food when it was done. The best part is that the bagel sandwiches were actually so good (crazy cheese pull on the bacon, egg and cheese). For the next few months I will be driving the teen to SE Portland for an activity on Sundays and will have to entertain myself for 90 minutes. Not long enough for a big adventure but not short enough to just wait in the lobby. So my first time out I chose Red Square Cafe for an iced mocha. There is a tiny parking lot and one hour street parking. Teen's dad met me there and he ate a bagel sandwich with his coffee. My coffee was good. The barista was great. The space is small, with bar seating for their computer using patrons (it really is an internet cafe) and maybe 6 tables. There is a clean restroom. The ex enjoyed his bagel sandwich. I had a bite and it was well done. There are some interesting characters coming in and out because of the location I think. The barista did a good job handling them. She has to be part social worker and part bouncer in addition to cooking and pulling shots. I hope they pay her OK. I am likely to return. I was not bored at all. read more

At last! We now have another place to get true European roast coffee, dark, rich, and flavorful! While I admire Heart Coffee's pioneering work in light roasts, it is too acidic and not the coffee experience for me. Sadly, after this became a national trend and then that trend reversed a few years back, while other cities moved back to more traditional roasts, Portland did not. Any cup of Joe here is generally sour and anything but smooth. This has made me a religiously dedicated Spella Caffé acolyte, it pleases me no end that I now have at least two more alternatives (Marino Café serves Bosnian coffee) for a great cup... and on my side of the river! The folks were absolutely charming, the space entertaining, and... workstations? Yay! They also have convenient bike and horsey parking out front, as well as outdoor sheeting. Perfect! read more

This restaurant is litterally appropriately named: it's a square red building. Of course, it's so much more than that. Ron and I stumbled on this very cute place awhile ago. We decided to stop for lunch and am so glad we did. After perusing the menu, we ordered at the counter. We were shortly rewarded with a delicious pastrami sandwich for me and a great-looking turkey sandwich for Ron. I have to admit when we first walked in, we both thought this was a charming coffee shop because of its small size. The signage is hung up above the order counter. Once we realized that, we were OK. The service staff is excellent and friendly. The venue is super clean and nicely decorated. There's plenty of parking on the street. There are also three computers for customers to use, making this into an internet cafe. We enjoyed our meal very much. I urge you to visit and enjoy! read more

On a recent visit to Portland I perused google maps for some great coffee and breakfast. Upon checking out their menu, I was immediately interested in visiting Red Square Cafe. I walked a mile to get there, but it was 100% worth it. I got the Spicy Ivan bagel breakfast sandwich (a fried egg, ham, sriracha, pepper jack cheese, tomato on a jalapeño cheddar bun) and an americano. This has to be the most satisfying bagel I've ever eaten :) Highly recommend getting out of bed for this place! read more

I'm more humanist than communist. After my first visit this morning I think Red Square is too. This is a café for the proletariat. Upon stepping in from the cold, hard world, I was enveloped in savory fryer smoke. I first noticed that in lieu of whimsical Portlandia art, there are a couple Russian-themed posters hanging on the cinder block walls. The utilitarian amenities seemed to suggest that if you desire Starbucks Reserve then you can scoot your fancy a$$ directly up to 1633 NE 39th Ave. After I received my order of black coffee and a custom bagel sandwich, it was clear that if you just want/need a quick, hot, delicious drink and a sandwich, this is the place. While I was there most patrons (including myself) were unaccompanied in their quest for caffeine. Only two individuals brought a stalwart canine companion with them. And (thankfully) on this eve of Trump's inauguration I did not overhear a single political or philosophically-tinged word. The service was expedient and faultlessly friendly. The passwordless wifi was fast. The facilities were clean. But there are no coat hooks or overstuffed furniture for a reason: your exiguous destiny awaits you somewhere out THERE, comrade. read more

If I could leave 0 stars I would. I've gone here about 3 times now and every single time they've forgotten about my order, taking over 30 minutes to make me a bagel with cream cheese. Neither of these times was the cafe anywhere near busy. Maybe two other customers. I continued to give them another chance each time assuming mistakes just happen but realistically they don't care how long you have to wait or if you ever even get a bagel. They have four computers on hand and half an hour of surfing time is included with your coffee. If you want more, shell over a small fee. They also offer printing and faxing services, and it's a much more pleasant place to do your office tasks than kinkos! read more

I apologize to Red Star, you are not the cafe i thought i was at, apparently it is Red Square- apparently even my russian ancestry was not enough to prevent my name confusion. Paco is my toshiba laptop. the guy said that Paco must have some virus or issue. Red Square is a decidedly "meh" coffee shop that I come back to every once in awhile because it's conveniently close to a laundromat I use from time to time. As Portland coffee shops go, there's really nothing special here. Decent coffee, decent food, and free wifi. I've had mistakes made on drinks or bagel sandwiches a couple times, but employees have always been great about sorting these things out. I'll probably never go out of my way to go to Red Square, but I'll happily stop by when I'm in the area looking for a coffee or a place to do some work. I guess this really is an internet cafe. They still have those? Of course they do. And they should. Listen to my inner dialog write itself. Not everyone has a laptop and a smart phone, and they shouldn't! So the place is kinda small, and a bunch of computer monitors at the "bar seats" makes it even a bit more crowded. But this is the place I would want to hang if I were visiting Portland and needed access to internet. Oh to have this place to look for housing when first I moved here - as opposed to soulless Kinkos across the city. So finding a table big enough for two was tough. There's only three of them and two were already taken. There's some shelves of self-serve food wrapped to go without prices. Yesterdays maybe... I get a yummy looking blueberry scone with sugar on top to go with a much needed coffee. The house coffee was pretty good, definitely on the mild side - not too much bite. I ordered a chicken & rice soup which was brought to me by the server. I really enjoyed it! Thick and maybe lemony? A small bowl for $2.50 was perfect for lunch. A quiet business meeting taking place, a slightly louder meeting of douche-nozzles (or 1+ friend), a few stragglers on computers. A somewhat dark place, with a serving area like a square whole cut out of the wall as you enter. A little on the squishy side (tight quarters) but perfectly comfy once you sit. Decent or better food, access to internet for the internet-less (don't know the price for that), free wifi... Red Square actually offers computers for people to use if they don't bring their own, a rarity this day in age, and the slightly-higher than comfortable chairs and tables are great for making a person feel like a kid again. The coffee is Stumptown, the tea is tasty, and the decor is modern. Not a bad little place to spend some time with your computer, but if you're wanting a place to spread out your books and study, you might want to check some place else. read more

I was definitely surprised at how good my latte was after coming in here. Not that it looked dive-y but it wasn't the usual "trendy" Portland coffee shop. And maybe I'm alone in this, but I love that they put ketchup on their bagel sandwich, which was also delicious. The staff was very friendly and it was well priced. It could be a bit bigger and have a larger selection of bagel sandwiches, but I'm probably spoiled from being a regular at Spielman's. Good coffee, great sandwiches, nice people. read more
