The Red Rover Mine was once owned by California Gov. Henry Gage in the late 1880s. He named the gold mine after his dog. It's known as one of the highest-producing gold mines in Los Angeles County.
The hiking trails traverse through the historic mining area. To access the trails avoid driving down Red Rover Mine Rd, instead, take a right on Avenue V off of Sierra Hwy and drive up the dirt road about a mile. Park along the side of the dirt road and proceed up the mountain.
The trail is an approximate 2 mile loop around the side of the mountain. You'll get to view a 3 of the 6 former mine shaft openings. Obviously you should keep your distance and not enter. Along the way you'll also get an up close view of the large white cross that's clearly visible from the 14 fwy. If you go in spring you'll also get to appreciate an abundance of wild flowers. read more
