I make weekend visits to San Rafael about every other month. This month was no different. Red Rooster is usual at the top of my list. It is easy to find, close to parking garage, owners are very friendly and the food is fresh and tasty! I love the clam chowder I wish the bowls were bigger! So good! I added an Asian salad which I'm will definitely have again. I was full but just kept eating it! We also had Cheesy Balls! Oh my goodness so good! Must order! The fries fresh and tasty! We made a last minute reservation to pop by here on Easter. We had our fur baby with us so we sat outside. We were a little lonely as we were the only table outside but inside was busy. The service was excellent and the staff was very friendly. They have great beverage options and ordered very fresh brewed iced tea, Arnold Palmer and a tasty IPA. They have a large food menu selection, with so many amazing options that we wished we had friends with us to try multiple dishes. That's okay, we will 100% be returning. And the perfect combo was the flavorful healthy kale salad. A very light red wine sweet dressing. And held up for leftovers next day. Great attention to the guests. Their menu has a little bit of everything for their patrons. Dinner last night was absolutely satisfying! My husband and I really never leave Red Rooster, dissatisfied with our meals. We each started with salads that are not only pleasing to the eyes, but also definitely pleasing to the palate. I had their Caesar Salad, which is actually their own version. Prepared with not the typical kind of Caesar Salad dressing. My husband had their Sesame Salad which was also as appetizing to the palate. By the way, they weren't small servings, but we both finished every morsel of our salads. Soooo good! Following our heavenly salads, we each had a pasta dish as we were both craving for pasta, anyway. My husband had their "Chicken Penne Pesto" and I, their "Cherry Tomato Spaghetti." I did ask for some sausage to be added to my pasta dish. Both our pasta dishes were incredible! Yes, every morsel was devoured. We always end our meals with a dessert to share. Oh my! Their "Chocolate Chip Cookie in a skillet with Vanilla Ice Cream" was heavenly, to say the least! Between the two of us, it was "gone with the wind!" I don't particularly think that my review will sway the masses, but I have to say my piece; dinner tonight from RRBO (like that? ;)) was one of the BEST I have had in a very long time. I ordered the filet mignon with mashed potatoes and veggies, and everything was cooked and seasoned to perfection. Craziest part- it was TO GO! I ordered the vegetarian pizza again, and just like last time, it was exceptional. The base is perfectly thin and crispy, exactly how I love it. My husband got the blue cheese pizza and added sausage on top -- he had an amazing experience too. And you must order their onion rings! They're incredibly crispy, and the portion size is huge. Wanted to take some time today to review a great experience we had here yesterday. My 13 year old daughter brought me here for early mothers day lunch and it was incredible! We loved every bit of it. From the staff to the food, atmosphere, easy parking, location. Everything was delicious, pricing and portions are very fair. Not impressed. While the service and atmosphere are decent, the food needs work. The pizzas are good. However the main dishes are not. The filet mignon main dish is fatty, rough, and bland. The meat is high in fat and connective tissue. The way it is cooked also degrades the flavor. Instead of grilling it per open flame and leaving grill marks and extra flavor it tastes like it is simply fried on a pan. The worst part is the quality of the meat. I feel filet mignon should be low in fat and very tender. This filet mignon is high in fat and not tender. Both the texture and flavors of the filet mignon are way off. I went here the other night when my power was out. I decided to order the lovers pizza with a gluten free crust and a glass of Chardonnay. The crust was solid (which isn't the case for all gluten free crust!) and the toppings were delicious. My only complaint is that they didn't have any gluten free pasta and the only gluten free option really was the pizza. The atmosphere is really nice, I enjoyed the warm lighting. I'm going to be intentional in sharing why our experience was 1 star (1.5 at best). The food was low quality and I could easily replicate it with dollar store ingredients. I'm going to save you a lot of money and trouble from dining at this restaurant and hope you have a positive dining experience elsewhere. But please read on... We were dissatisfied with the greasy pizza, which were probably made with medium at best pre-made frozen pizza from your local supermarket. The pepperoni had no pep, like it had given up trying to be who it was squeezed through as mystery meat to be. The cheese was one flat earth block with no discernible areas of separation at the crust, to indicate that it never started off as shredded cheese from a block. And The dough was artificial yet somehow extraordinarily moist with thick oil drippings. (See pictures). the fried chicken was worse than store bought, more likely made fresh using *insert most popular breadcrumb breading here* I was saddened to expect a genuine buttermilk fried chicken but found no buttermilk notes. The dry breading-style batter did not adhere to the chicken. And let's PLEASE not forgot how sad and tiny the chicken were. There's a part of me that can see the farm where these sick and malnourished chicken came from. There was more fibulae in the drumstick portion of the leg than there was meat. More bone in the thigh than there was edible protein. I can go on and on about how bad the fried chicken was. I understand that they WILL NOT live up to the glory days when a real chef backed the quality of their food. But in 2019 I had their buttermilk fried chicken 1/2 a bird. And it was a buttermilk fried chicken. No false advertising there. I was fair in scrutinizing that the breast portion that was split into before deep frying, did not cook well due to its thickness. The dark meat was juicy, the white meat was very dry. But my goodness their mashed potatoes and gravy made up the difference! These quality items are not AT ALL what they used to be, so do not let the similar name steer you astray. Almost forgot about their current mashed potatoes and gravy. Idahoan and worse than McCormick's, anyone. Yeah, that freaking bad!! Lastly, my son was letdown something fierce with their Filet mignon sandwich. The meat were few and far between. (PLEASE, for the sake of your sanity look at the picture of the interior). We are confident that it was beef, but not a filet mignon. On half the sandwich there were 2.5 pieces of meat with huge gaping space for their "aioli", the fixings within were next to absent, and the experience was akin to a mayo sandwich in a sub roll. The portions were g*d awful. The only decent item was their beer battered onion rings, which was in no way a saving grace from how poorly we felt about this experience. The customer service was good as well. And that's how they added a 0.5 stars to their 1. There is absolutely no value here. 3 dishes that we expected to enjoy no matter how bad it was after our awesome hike and we actually did not enjoy. Bravo. Because of price to product, we actually feel like we were robbed. This has formally made it as the worst experience we have ever had at a $10-$30 restaurant. read more

I've been hungry for good fried chicken and decided to give Red Rooster a try. The chicken was delicious with crunchy coating and well done dark meat. A leg and thigh. I tried the honey mustard dipping sauce but preferred just the yummy taste of the chicken. It was served with mashed potatoes and gravy and steamed / sautéed mixed vegetables. The gravy was good but was too small for amount of mashed potatoes. You can see in photo they made a little volcano for gravy. The potatoes were tasty but more lumps than I like. The vegetables were fresh but under cooked to point of being crunchy. Service was very friendly and attentive. I think I will try their fried chicken sandwich next time I come. We had an anemic caprese to begin. I had the roast chicken and my wife had the fried chicken sandwich. The fries that came with my chicken seemed to have been cooked and recooked and there weren't many. Like the classic joke, they weren't great and there weren't enough. The sautéed vegetables were over cooked and soggy. My wife's sandwich was soaking in the thin "balsamic vinaigrette" so it was soggy and she mentioned that there was not a lot of chicken to speak of in it. The clam chowder blows Fisherman's wharf chowder right out of the bread bowl. Creamy, rich yet delicate and so satisfying. I enjoyed it at the bar, where owner A served my date and me with a welcoming smile. A few locals at the bar also made us feel we were amongst friends. They have a protective canopy for wind and weather, which is awesome, but it is clear plastic so diners can still enjoy the view. The meat was tender and juicy inside. It was so good that I devoured half the chicken before I remembered it came with a honey-mustard dipping sauce. I dunked generously and enjoyed each bite. The onion rings were a good portion (some places only give like 5 sad rings) but I received a healthy pile. The ranch dip was tasty and thicker than most places -- I think it was house-made.
