Unfortunately, my first mistake as an overly eager traveler was to rely on what was in my opinion a misleading description and inaccurate photos of the Red Rock Escape Guest House shown on VRBO#313713 and on the Red Rock Escape Guest House advertisement on Findrentals.com and redrockescape.com.
My second mistake was agreeing to pay the owner upfront for a six-night stay.
Upon arriving, it was my opinion that the Red Rock Escape Guest House was was not as represented, as follows: interior walls and ceilings filthy dirty; table covered with dirt, spilled liquids, and stains; paint peeling off walls; dirty dishes in the cupboard (including lipstick on a glass); stove dirty and greasy; window blinds broken, dirty, crunched up; front and back doors damaged as if "kicked in," pried open, or chewed by dogs; light bulbs out or missing; vents dirty; floors filthy; bed linens soiled and dusty. The kitchen and bathroom faucets dripped.
I contacted the owner, Jon Whitcomb, who agreed in a text message to refund my upfront payment for six nights less one night stay, promising to mail the refund check to my office back home. I also emailed the owner with photos of these conditions, confirming what in my opinion were unacceptable conditions.
Upon arriving back home, no refund check was received. When I contacted the owner about the refund, he texted me back saying that he had "changed his mind" and refused to honor his refund agreement. He said that the photos I sent him (which I am posting here) are only "minor details." He then promised a "partial" refund and has so far reneged on that promise too.
In short, I honestly tried to work with the owner to resolve this situation. Nothing seemed to work. I ended up having to pay top prices for an unreserved hotel after I extended my stay, only to find that the owner was not fulfilling his refund promise.
