When attempting to reach Red Oak regarding their billing, I discovered that they use a sales office that represents greater than 30 treatment facilities. At no point were we told that the initial call regarding treatment went to a sales office, with the intent to steer our family to the a center with rates that border on extortion. Though my health insurance was charged $153,000 during the time of my son's stay, they insisted on additional cash payments. For room and board, they charged $6000 per month. My son was in a room with five other men, meaning that the facility was charging $36,000 per month for room and board only. This did not include treatment or medications. When our family was unable to keep paying out of pocket, my son was discharged without medications, without follow up appointments, and without a discharge plan. During the three months that he was there, he never saw a physician, a nurse practitioner or a physician's associate, yet he was charged for repeat medical exams. Who was performing these exams, since he was never seen by a medical professional? That is a fraudulent business practice. In addition, he reported that he was given his medications by what he reports as "camp staff." This included the medication suboxone, which is a controlled substance, which should have been given by a nurse. My son reported that he was never given medication by a RN. Now, this company has resorted to harassing my family for $20,000. For what? The substandard care that was received, the complete disregard for his safety, and the subsequent clamor for additional money is nothing short of disgusting. Was the $153,000 that my insurance was billed not enough to cover a staffer handing out medications? Not enough to keep six men in one room, to feed them hamburgers and hotdogs? This place is a disgrace. They had us read a script so that we did not support my son leaving treatment. Upon arrival he was supposed to receive an Invega injection. Not o my did they fail to give him his medication, they allowed him to sign out without medicine, without money, cell phone, belongings and dropped him over 30 miles away to a homeless shelter. There was no room at the shelter. I received a call to get my son but Red Oak insisted that we stick to the script, promising that he'd get cold, hungry, and would be forced to find his way back to Red Oak. The lady at the homeless shelter said there was no place for him and he'd have to walk along the highway 15 miles to the next shelter. She was so upset with Red Oak and told me that they are always dropping people to them and that they're all about the money. She was appalled at how they treat clients. She said the streets were filled with fentanyl and heroine, and my son was at high risk of harm being left there. With the help of kind strangers, we were able to have a 76-yr old family friend drive 2 hours and a volunteer deputy sheriff drive 2 hours to meet halfway at a meeting point. The next day we arranged a flight back home. My son has since been hospitalized 4 times due to being off his medication. We believed we were putting our son in good hands at Red Oak. The primary goal of treatment is to DO NO HARM. Being there set my son back terribly and we're stick fighting to get him stabilized. To make matters more stressful, Red Oak agreed to refund our money if we agreed to sign a non-disparagement agreement. When I called our credit card company, they advised us not to sign because their dispute department handles those things. In the end, red oak made it extremely difficult for the credit card dispute. I provided everything asked and in the end, the credit card company said red oak would not refund. When I called red oak to sign the non-disparagement agreement, I was told they rescinded it since we tried to dispute claim through credit card. So now I will write to the state, share with everyone, and get the word out to avoid this place at all costs. I work in the field of trauma recovery and I can promise you this place doesn't have a clue for handling clients suffering with trauma. As a matter of fact, they not only re-traumatized our son but traumatized our entire family. It is criminal how they handled my son. Upon arriving at a Red Oak, my son called and said, "mom, please pick me up. I'm going to get worse here. This place is nothing like the said. The bathrooms are moldy, the food is frozen meals, the adventure therapy they promised, never happened, and i don't feel safe." When we met with the family counselor, she said, "this is normal." She proceeded to go over the "script" with us. When my son was released and I called to get help from the therapist, she flat out admitted, "we failed your son." She went on to say "we were understaffed, and we need to talk to management about how we can communicate better and improve." I was not going to speak up about this whether we signed a non-disparagement agreement or not, but based on where we are now and what my son and my family have endured, this has fueled my passion to fight for everyone battling mental illness and addiction to make sure this never happens again!!! This place ruined a month of life which I will never get back. They are a horrible treatment center that gets tax write offs from the government and makes millions of dollars every year yet provides the worst quality treatment, food, services, fairness, and activities possible. The people that run the place are horrible, irresponsible, uncaring and selfish. In my experience there, I was treated very poorly and unfairly. My parents spent part of their life savings of approximately $44,000 on this place to get me help which I was not given. They are completely misleading when they tell you all the activities that they do. In my conversation with the admissions people, they said that I was going to be going paintballing, whitewater rafting, canoeing, rock climbing, and using the ropes course every week. Unfortunately the field manager Brian is a lazy bum who doesn't know how to do his job properly. Instead, in my experience there, he coordinated grueling backpacking, camping, and hiking trips and in addition there was a trip to a blueberry farm called "blueberry pauls" where we had to pick up compost (cow shit and coffee grounds) that had worms in it which was heinous and disgusting and had nothing to do with substance recovery which is what is was there for. These were the types of things he planned every weekend instead of the promised activities even when there weren't as many outdoor activities as promised going on already. There were actually boring moments here which was sad for $22,000 a month. One day, I was on a day hiking trip with my group and they had hired a guide onto their staff who was in recovery himself and on this trip he started to walking slowly and from side to side. Later in the hike, he fell down while bending over trying to tie his shoe. After that, we were walking across the bridge and he fell off from being too inebriated into a creek/bush. While at the facility, he was completely intoxicated off of alcohol, heroin, or xanax because of the way he was acting. He was nodding off on the table while breakfast was going on and had fallen down and dropped a bunch of papers. This was incredibly triggering to the clients who were addicts trying to recover and stay away from that behavior in the facility and was a really bad look for everyone there and the facility for not looking into this guy more and doing more background research on him before hiring. Towards the end of my stay, I went off on a weekend camping trip with my group. When I got back, I found my room completely trashed. I was attacked by fellow clients who urinated on my clothes and shoes and then proceeded to throw them in the trash. They then dumped Sriracha, cookie crumbs, and granola all over my bed, ravaged my clothes in my drawers, and even stole some personal belongings as well. This was all over a deck of playing cards (no trust here.) The staff were to blame for this. They were completely irresponsible for not monitoring my room or the cameras while I was away. I went to seek help after seeing the damage and this horrible staff member named Rachel was completely irresponsible because she was there that weekend and didn't try to see this happen, make sure that this wouldn't happen, or monitor the footage. she instead gave me attitude and asked me what I wanted her to do about it. This was completely unprofessional and almost made it seem like she was taking the side of the people that did this to me. Additionally they won't stand up for you and they don't check the cameras or monitor the footage and instead punished me and tried to make me go on a "quest" which is their definition of a week out in the wilderness with one staff member backpacking 35 miles a day with no showers. I had to fake suicide in order to get out of it and out of there. Additionally, the food quality is absolute shit even though they make millions. They serve cafeteria grade food and are actually counterproductive by not allowing vaping or smoking there and will not give you anything but misery and lost hope during your stay there. My fiancé was in Red Oak for 3 months and I think it was the best program he has ever been in. I know when he went in there, I hadn't seen a real smile in a long time. Red oak really helped him to change in to a better and stronger man. I'm so proud of him. The only thing I did not like was his therapist, Mark. He manipulated my fiancé to think he needed to go into another program after that. Something he did not know, that was not part of the plan my fiancé and his parents agreed on. Now, my fiancé is in another program and he is so unhappy. He wants to come home and take care of his life after 2 months. Mark also tried to come between our relationship and he talked over and for my fiancé. Most of the things he said, my fiancé was not thinking. He was thinking on a completely other line. My nephew went to This place it is flat out awful. They will lie to you say that they have Sonos or ways to listen to music when in reality theirs none of that or any way to contact outside people like gf bf or family members the facility's are terrible and half the time not even in the right shape or ready for use. They take your passport making it almost impossible to leave on your own accord with the money you are paying you can get better service and facility's theirs maybe 2-3 licensed therapist for 45-50 people while everyone else is in training getting paid minimum wage. first day I was there a man who worked their overdosed while leading a hike and had to be transported by staff where is the knowledge and background checks that should be done before hiring such awful people. They will sweet talk you and make it sound like everything is a doozie when in reality your days are filled with nothing and maybe only a hour or two of therapy everyday that's in groups so you won't get the help you truly need.
