The Ship Inn is a small but well formed pub with two main sections, a small area for locals on the…read moreleft as you walk in, and a bigger area on the right. The place has been recently refurbished but the old stone walls and old bar are still intact. If you ever visited the Clutha Bar, it's sort of got a similar layout, including TV with some Soap Operas on a Friday night! Very dog friendly (just like all the pubs in Melrose) and they served a really nice pint of Deuchars IPA - which in itself is a rarity! There's a large outdoor area at the back that was being refurbished for our visit, but it looks pretty smart and will no doubt make an excellent area to enjoy a pint in the sun in Melrose.

The bar has gone through several refurbishments in the last few years which they obviously didnt like and has now settled for couches at the front with some basic tables and chairs, while to the back you will find booth seats and high tables. This is fine if you are in for a drink, but it can be quite awkward eating dinner at the high tables. You will also find that people queue at the bar here which is a phenomenon I have never seen anywhere else in the world! Hunters Hall is a good place for a quick or cheap meal and the perfect start to a night out in Galashiels. There is a huge mix of different people in here and this is one of the few Wetherspoons which plays music. You can also catch big matches here as well.

Excellent experience and we will be going back again next time we need a few days break from the family.

Great surprise find in Eyemouth…read more We were visiting Lindisfarne a few days ago when the oncoming tide laid our 'on island' lunch plans to rest. So as we headed north toward Edinburgh we were on the hunt for a likely spot. Eyemouth caught our eye and we found Oblo next to the harbor. We ate upstairs on the deck in the Bar/cafe area and had a nice view to go with our great meal. I went for the open faced steak sandwich and my daughter got the haddock goujons (aka fish and chips) and both of us were very pleased. My wife ordered the langoustines which were quite good. But the big surprise (to me at least) was my son's pizza with chicken and parma ham. The ham was just delicious and the pieces of chicken were not the dry and tasteless chunks I had feared. Lastly, tasty drinks were had by all - ale and cider for the parents and juice for the kids. The service was good and it was really nice to be able to enjoy a sunny day in Scotland by eating outdoors. We were very happy to have found Eyemouth...and Oblo.

Not exactly in the middle of nowhere but fairly remote. Found somewhere to pull over and turn around after5 minutes drive. Called to make sure that the kitchen was still open (mid afternoon) and headed back. The staff were young an friendly, service was good and my creamy fish pie and a glass of cider were tasty and satisfying. It was now late afternoon (about 4-4:30) and I had seen a road sign for a castle - so I looked on Google and discovered that we were just minutes from Holy Island: https://www.lindisfarne.org.uk/ Couldn't resist - so off we drove, pretty landscape and beautiful views once we had crossed the busy train track. Then we got the crossing to the island and realized for the first time that access was determined by the tides and the tide was clearly coming in. Stopped for a quick chat with two photographers getting ready to take pics and ascertained that we had better be back in 15 minutes or we could get trapped - so off we went, quick visit of the beautiful island, took a few pics (of course we couldn't stop for long) and crossed back within about 20 minutes - we likely had another 10-15 minutes to be honest before we would have been cut off - but Edinburgh awaited us :) Three thumbs up Definitely visit bot the pub and the island but check tidal times before deciding which to do first!
