Just be mindful of the "season" so they're not wilted, etc. it's recommended donation of $5 to enter, but if you don't donate, buy a bunch of goodies in their extensive shop of preservatives, non perishables and more. You can get organic produce almost anywhere now--but not like the wonderful fare on Tuesdays at Red Fire Farm booth at Farmer's Market in Forest Park day. I had to curb my enthusiasm after picking up red, red organic tomatoes, lovely eggplant and cucumbers and a yellow zucchini, and some peaches and swiss chard, and ground tomatoes (yum--thank you Gabe for your help), and ...well you can see I didn't really resist much. I can't wait to make my sauteed veggie bowl of onions, garlic, swiss chard, canellini beans and shitake mushrooms (from Urban Artisan Farm booth) with two poached eggs. This is the freshest produce around, and certainly the friendliest service as well. read more

The doors are open but there are virtually no items to purchase. A wasted trip, wish I had known the place is empty in the winter.

Organically grown produce... You can choose vegetables, cheese, eggs on the honor system from a store room, or pull stuff up from the field if the farmer is around. The lettuce here is alive...It made me feel like I was seeing a lion in the wild when I had been used to seeing them in zoos. What would you rather eat zoo chattle or wild lettuce? Don' t miss their Tomato Festival in August...these tomatoes are really yummy. CSA shares are possible allowing you to reserve a part of the crop for yourself and help the farm finance the next growing season. Looking up their website for this article I found out they now distribute their produce to Cambridge, JP and Somerville now. Signed up for the CSA in the Boston area. It was my first and last year doing so. In the past we were members of Mountain View Farm in Easthampton which was an awesome CSA but doesn't deliver to Boston. With Red Fire we would sometimes purchase their produce at their stand in Northampton and loved their greens. On a positive side - people who work there do seem friendly, we really enjoyed the produce and used almost all of it making us eat a lot more veggies which was great! We did have a worm or two and sometime herbs or tomatoes that had already gone bad but that didn't bother us too much as we want to support local produce and understand sometimes produce isn't perfect plus most of the produce was in good condition. Negative side - the delivery service is terrible. They missed our delivery three times and the amount of energy it takes to follow up and get issued a refund is no small task. This alone is cause for us to go somewhere else. In addition, I find their prices high. For example the egg Share comes out of VT. If you go to the farmers market in VT the cost of eggs is 1/2 the price at market. I understand having an up charge but this is a bit much even for Bostonians. On a small note I wished they would use something more green for delivery as the waxes boxes are not recyclable. read more

This was my first (and last) CSA farm share through RFF. I agree with other reviewers that the people are very nice. However, it did not have the variety of vegetables I had hoped. We had bags full of greens, some I wasn't familiar with, that didn't last long enough to eat; the tomatoes were bad within a few days; and lots of eggplant which is not a family favorite. We did enjoy the yellow squash and zucchini and were able to use the onions and garlic. Seeing so many corn fields in the area, I was very surprised that the total for the share was SIX ears over two weeks. Initially the berries in the fruit share were great as were a few weeks of peaches, but lately it's been pretty much just melon which is also not a big favorite. As a retired person on a fixed income, I will save money purchasing the veggies and fruit I need as I need them and have less waste. I know the farm share works out well for some people, but I was disappointed. read more

Went here for the first time for pick your own strawberries. I know it's the end of the season but the woman working the farm stand assured us there would be plenty of berries. A bit of a strange system where you get you carton, drive to the field down the street then come back to pay. After about an hour the 4 of us adults had not even covered the bottom of our tray. The berries were small and squishy. Definitely not good pickin's. On the way into the farm stand to pay, there is a loose step with no caution sign, I fell, not only am I 6mo pregnant so that was scary but I also spilled all the berries we had picked and cut open my toe. Updating my review since the vegetable yield has certainly gotten a lot better over the last month or so. We get enough to cook well for a week as a couple, and the variety has been pretty decent, including mache, bok choy, squashes, hot peppers, etc. Additionally, the fruit share has gotten wayyy more generous of late (most recent one included 11 apples and two pears). Also, as I wrote in my previous review, they are genuinely lovely people, so I'm really happy to have been able to update the review, and most importantly, to continue to support them by purchasing shares. read more

I agree with everything Laura said about the CSA. The produce was sometimes delicious, sometimes too ripe, and sometimes had worms. For the high cost I had thought we'd be getting something more consistent. We were really excited about the non-orange carrots, as Red Fire Farm raves about their carrots... but the season is over and we haven't seen anything but orange. Only 1/3 pound of okra once, only a ton of tomatoes for just 2 or 3 weeks, lettuce that is so bitter it's inedible, and mealy apples. On the flip side, we learned that kholrabi is amazing, baby sweet peppers are delicious, tiny plums are so juicy, yellow watermelon is the best, and it really is all about fresh blueberries. Do you get your money's worth in produce? No. You can get a LOT more produce at places like Russo's or Whole Foods or farmers' markets, for the same price. But do you get to try new foods and know that you're helping a local farm? Absolutely. It all comes down to your priorities and your pocketbook. Unfortunately, I don't think I'll be joining again. (Oh, and just a warning: if you sign up for the extended season they randomly change your pick up location... that was NOT on the sign-up sheet. For someone who doesn't have a car it becomes a lot more difficult.) read more

This review is for the summer share Cambridge/Kendall Square pickup location. I have been a member of this CSA for 2 years now. The pickup location is very convenient, located within a couple minutes' walk from the Kendall Square T station. The produce is exceptionally fresh and high quality, with a wide variety of items. Early in the season, the share is largely lettuces, other leafy greens and beets. Now mid-season there is tremendous variety including herbs, tomatoes, corn, peppers, eggplant, carrots, and more greens. Mid-season, the volume of produce from this share is pushing the limit of what two motivated adults can eat each week. The value of this share is moderate, at $20 per week- it probably costs more than I would typically spend at a grocery store on produce, but the value is in the freshness, the variety (including the motivation to eat some veggies I would not normally buy), supporting local agriculture, and in my situation, the ease of pickup. The hours are not fantastic for 'summer Fridays' in that if I want to take a long weekend, I cannot pick up my share because they don't open until 10:30 AM. In this situation, I typically have to satisfy by hunger with the joy of giving my share to a friend. The procedures for pickup have changed this year from the past, and from every other CSA I've been a member of. This year, the share is pre-bagged, so that the customer doesn't see most of what they're getting, and does not have the opportunity to swap items. This is probably easier for the staff at the pickup location because customers can get in/out faster, but it is a problem for the customer who has a food allergy, and finds that food among their produce later on. I also adore having the PYO option and the farm out in Granby is so fun and user friendly. I was a member of Red Fire Farm CSA for the 2009 season and have already signed up for a 2010 share. My boyfriend and I ate the whole share together and it changed our diet for the better. We ate more vegetables, we ate less meat, and we ate out less (because there was always plenty of veggies in the fridge at home to eat). I felt so much healthier and I think we ended up spending *less* on food because of these changes. I LOVED the huge variety of veggies they provided and am a more versatile cook because of it. I found out that I love kale, and when the share was over, I found myself buying kale in the grocery store for the first time. Beets are also pretty tasty! I visited the farm about 3 times last season for the pick-your-own, the strawberry festival, and the tomato festival. It meant a lot to me to see where the veggies were being grown. read more

I've signed up for Red Fire Farm CSA shares of all kinds over the past few years- summer, fall, deep winter, eggs, produce, fruit- and have loved every minute of it. Their quality is unbeatable and it's an amazing value. I also braved the 2+ hour drive to their farm from Boston multiple times for various events on the farm. This is our first experience with Red Fire Farm -- and I mostly love it. The quality, quantity, and variety of produce so far has been really fun -- stuff we know and love with a few items that are new to us, and fun to experiment with. We splurged on a full veggie, fruit, and flower share for the summer, and our only issue is the difficulty with pickup. We're part of the pickup at Clover in Harvard Sq, which consists of Red Fire Farm leaving bins out in the restaurant and folks coming by on their own to pickup their stuff. The time range is fab -- 4:30pm - 11:30pm -- which is why we chose it, but now I'm less enamored -- if we go in anytime after 6pm, our fruit share is missing (twice now out of five pick ups) and our veggie share has clearly been picked through. At our last pick up, we saw restaurant patrons picking up bins and marveling at the free food, until we explained what it was. There's no sign or anything on the bins explaining what it is. Red Fire is v nice abt letting us get double fruit the following week, but still kind of frustrating. We'll see how the summer goes -- I'll update this review in October. read more

I joined their CSA with a friend this year based on this friend's previous good experience with Red Fire Farm. I've been really impressed with the quantity, quality and variety of vegetables that we've been getting this season. It starts off a little slow, mainly with a lot of greens, but now we're getting a lot of tomatoes, peppers, zucchini, eggplant, herbs and corn. Everything is really delicious. However, it's a lot of food, so split with a friend if you're unsure about your ability to use up the whole share (we have two couples splitting and it's perfect). Highly recommended! read more

I visited a couple of weeks ago and was quite impressed. The person working that day said the store in Montague was much larger. So I talked my wife into going to the Montague store, what a disappointment. The herb plants were mostly dead and the tomato plants looked like they have not seen water for at least two weeks. But boy the baker was sure proud of his overpriced bread. So we went back to Granby were we found the plants in a similar dead state. I couldn't believe what we were seeing so that is the last time we'll go to the Red Fire Farm. read more

We went to Red Fire Farm 8/19 and loved the spiral sunflower gardens. The weather had beat the sunflowers up a little, but there were still some amazing sunflowers to be seen. They have a great store with lots of local products from farms in the area. Great place to visit with family! read more

This farm is the worst place for people with disabilities. I was chased out and screamed at by employees, who were treating me as though I was diseased. No kindness, nor compassion, not from the employees and not from the owner. I left in tears. I'm giving one star only because there's no option to give none. read more

Great experience with RFF's regular season CSA. Also as was pointed out in another review, someone, posted a deceptive photo of "beets". RFF never ever gave those out as "beets", it was always as beet greens. I absolutely adored them and was especially thrilled to get them with the itty Bitty beet attached - they were so pretty sauteed....yum too. I am getting hungry just thinking about them. Anyways the CSA haul was great every week, but amounts did vary depending where we were in the season. Very light distributions in the spring were more than made up for by HUGE distributions in September. A share does include PYO access, but I think the share value is covered without including any PYO produce. I did go picking a few times this year and enjoyed the experience and was amazed at how beautiful and plentiful the produce was. They do post limits of course :) I had a fruit share as well. That was a disappointment. I started wondering early on if it was going to even break even with farmers market prices on fruit, and I feel like it only just barely broke even. Also the assortment of fruit was a bit of a letdown; there were no plums or raspberries, off the top of my head...and watermelon after watermelon for the summer/fall stretch. read more

The corn is fantastic the fruit is flavorful and juicy and having a CSA is inline with my goal to be more healthy. I learn a lot being on the email list and from people at the farm too. The first day I brought my child to pick your own tomatoes and sunflowers and he exclaimed, "this is the best day of my life," so I am sold. read more

Red Fire Farm has a Community Supported Agriculture program (CSA to the pros). The way it works is as follows: basically, you purchase a share of the farm and they provide you with 10lbs of veggies every week (enough for a family of 4). The program lasts 24 weeks (from mid June through late October) and it costs $500 for the whole season (that's only $21 per week!). For $180 more, you can add fruits. Pickups for the Red Fire Farm CSA are every Wednesday in the parking lot of the Central Square Co-op Market. Every week, Red Fire sends an email with the week's veggies list. Some you know, and if you are as ignorant as I, some you'll meet for the first time. Their weekly email is nice, because, not only does it lists the veggies you'll get that week, but it gives you ideas for recipes. In our household, the surprise veggie factor has helped us to try new recipes and eat a lot healthier. I TOTALLY RECOMMEND IT. read more

When I lived in the Valley, Red Fire Farm was my CSA. I loved buying my produce from excited young farmers focused on producing high quality organic produce. One of my week's highlights was going to the farm and picking out my own produce according to that week's allotment. Sometimes I even got to pick part of my share from the field. It was fun to harvest my own basil and beans. I learned a lot about cooking seasonal produce from their newsletter. The farmers are inclusive. They invite their customers to visit the farm, take tours, volunteer, and enjoy an annual tomato festival. read more

Just signed up for Year 3 with Red Fire. I am already looking forward to a fab summer bounty. The only reason why I knocked them down a star is because they have two Somerville pick ups, neither of which are T-friendly. Additionally, their Cambridge Friday pick up would benefit from shifting its hours a smidge later than 6 pm. All that said, I love that this CSA tosses in so much I'd never select (i.e. kohlrabi) but has so much that we use up immediately (i.e. kale). They're great with substitutions too, if there's something you either can't stand or are allergic to (in my case, eggplant). Friendly staff, knowledgable, and all around, a fabulous CSA. read more

This is my 4th season with Red Fire Farm's CSA program. In addition to the veggies we also get a fruit share and egg share. We drive in from Reading every Wednesday to pick up our bounty and LOVE it! So, variety wise - it's the best. Every week we unpack our goodies and ooh and ahh over the freshness and variety. Then I think about what to do with it over night. By Thursday I'm off and running with one recipe after another. Over the years I've gathered up quite a repertoire of quick, delicious and healthy recipes. Past seasons there have been an over abundance of certain things like summer/zucchini squash or peppers - but I like the challenge of figuring out what to make with it. If I'm ever at a loss I share things with my neighbors. Cost wise - I figure we save at least $150 a month. Our grocery bills have gone way down and we never have to supplement by buying fruit or veggies or eggs all season long. We eat home most meals and entertain regularly - so it always seems like just the right amount. Some weeks I wonder if they're sending all of the ingredients for my favorite recipes at once - on purpose or if it's just a coincidence. Then I realize that's how the harvest rolls.... Ratatouille is a delicious summer recipe because everything needed to make it is harvested at the same time... I just feel so much more connected to the natural cycle of growing seasons. After all of these years I still marvel at "THAT'S what this veggie should be like when it's fresh"... I have to mention the fruit share too. Honestly - there is nothing like the berries... and peaches that taste like peaches and have fuzzy skin like they did when I was a kid. The melons are amazing - they practically pop open when you wave the knife over them! The eggs - make me never want to buy an egg at a grocery store again. They are totally different and wonderful. So, I recommend Red Fire Farm to everyone! Not many people from Reading will drive to Somerville to pick it up though.. but we're more than happy to. It's been worth it every single time. We plan on signing up for the fall and winter season this year too. read more

Every once in a while it's nice to go and check out where your food comes from, (maybe a little nicer if you're a vegetarian like me). This farm specializes in organic produce and eggs. If you go for a visit, you'll find yourself in an idyllic place where you can pick your own veggies, or shop in the store and pay via the honor's system and a lock box. It's got a nice vibe and is worth a stop if you're from out of town but want some organic fruit to take back with you. They have an incredible selection of hot peppers (some with bizarre looking fractals on them) and different types of melons currently. I can't say that I've ever had a yellow watermelon before visiting here, but it was totally delicious. They also have a roadside farmstand in Montague, MA (also on the honor's system) and sell their wares outside of South Station in Boston on Thursdays. read more

This is our first year as CSA members of Red Fire Farm and we love it! The CSA is bountiful and varied. I have been a CSA member at other places and they ended up being quite repetitive, which was not the case at RFF. The CSA can be quite heavy so we ended up investing in a small wheeling cart to carry our veggie & fruit share. Next year, I am thinking of starting canning some of the veggies. As CSA members, we are allowed to do some free picking at the farm and we took advantage of this over labor day weekend. This is a nice perk and they allow for greater allowances for Boston members since the farm is quite far in Granby. read more

The produce from this farm is fantastic. Summer is an adventure in cooking whatever shows up each week. I pick up at their Newton dropoff location, which is a handy place for me v. Granby. I sent some of their gorgeous multi-colored peppers to Florida last week with my visiting friend who was admiring them- their beauty second to their taste and crunch. read more

Red Fire Farm's deep winter share is my first experience with a CSA. On a tight budget, I teamed up with two other families to split two shares. I realized I would probably need to supplement my third of the two shares (as I cook veggies daily), but I had no idea how little of use I would actually receive from RFF. Although it was fun to try new foods (daikon radishes, black turnips and the like), they were hardly useful and let's just say, I made a lot of soups that my family wasn't fond of. Also, many an onion, garlic bulb and potato was rotten or moldy when cut into, within a day or two of pickup (like I'd say nearly half of what I got of these was actually bad). On the upside, the greens were delicious (although with only my portion of the shares, it left me with barely enough for one small serving for two people), and the maple yogurt was so yummy (can't rave enough about Side Hill Farm's yogurt). Pickled beets and mealy apples (every. single. one. of. them.), eh, not so much. I understand how a garden works, and a deep share requires disbursing foods that have been stored, but the quality (and quantity) I expected from RFF, based on the cost, just did not pan out even remotely close for my family. I really wanted to like this experience, and am super bummed that I cannot recommend RFF's CSA. read more

I'm sorry to say that I agree with Laura. I was especially disappointed with my RedFire experience this year (2011). I've been purchasing my produce from farmer's markets for over 7 years now (in fact during the summer I rarely go into a Whole Foods for stuff other than cheese and some protein staples. I've been a member of two CSA's. I joined RedFire last year after reading all these rave reviews and because they have a pick-up location close to my home in Allston. I was less than entirely satisfied in 2010 and felt they were a little disorganized at the farm, but I chalked it up to a tough year and possibly some new farm-based administrative staff. I even joined their winter share last year - to give them a boost as they launched that new endeavor (not a good experience - but that's a whole different saga, for now I'll focus on the Summer). This summer the administrative problems continued. My wife and I split the cost for the CSA and each of us pays part of the share. On our "application" we made it abundantly clear that we do NOT share the same last name. Rather than hyphenate or somehow cross reference our account I received at least one "past-due" notices during the distribution period. After I sent a PDF of my PayPal payment it was cleared up, but the same thing occurred in 2010. Thank goodness for my distribution site share goddess (more about that below) she rectified fixed up the problem. Funny thing - the farm continues to send me weekly updates about what I'll be getting in my winter share distribution - I guess because there's a woman who shares my last name and they continue to keep me on that email list even though it's not my share. I suppose I could pick up a "free" share but it is particularly strange considering I reached out twice with emails to correct the confusion so it wouldn't cause a problem for another member. I'm going to offer one suggestion - systems integration! Have a good designer (I happen to be a graphic designer by training) come in and organize/redesign your website. It is very difficult to navigate and rather opaque. Make sure that whomever does the work presents a clear site map! And integrate a commerce function two automate book keeping. And yes, you can afford it. Plenty of designers would accept farmshare for more than a year (or donate a share or three to a designated needy family) Guys - it's just my two cents! As to the food quality I had some issues this summer. The food was unfortunately often sub-par in quantity and quality. I know organic farming presents special challenges but I noticed at Redfire farm stands quality was always significantly better (true as well for wholesale accounts to Whole Foods, restaurants and the like). We received corn only twice all summer but peppers 7 weeks running (and at times 5 lbs. plus), but where was the variety...good green, purple, yellow beans, tomatillo, summer squashes (virtually non-existent eggplant - two weeks and quality lacking)? Tomatoes were really disappointing and from a farm that hosts an annual tomato festival? I just purchased mine from farm stands instead - an unfortunate added expense. As an investor - I felt the farm attitude was perhaps a little cavalier. Because I see such higher quality at the Redfire farm stands I found myself using the word pecuniary more than once this summer. On a positive note, Redfire finally got their act together on salad greens, delicious lettuces and greens weekly! Again on a positive note, Redfire does a superlative job with root veggies - abundant carrots, and positively luscious beets (the best I've ever had)! One thing I really never understood about Redfire is why they don't combine fruit/veggie shares - some of each - like most other farms do. I think its financial burden. Now what is sensational about the farm? Well, its not really so much a farm thing as a distribution site - my site in Brighton has the 2 BEST, I mean BEST, yes BEST distribution women you can imagine. They're sparkling, smart, sweet occasionally kooky and well, yummy! I know we'll always remain in contact - I just love them and their food blog (http://lovelylocavoreladies.wordpress.com/). What they foster at our site is special, we're a community, in Brighton we share recipes, ideas, stories about kids, bat mitzvahs, etc. They are truly two lovely ladies. So.... next year, I've decided to move onto a farm that pre-packs boxes for pick-up (I'm hoping that the act of handling the distribution will help insure quality) and offers mixed rations (fruit/veggie). I know the farmers personally and have an intimate relationship with them so I think it will be a better fit. My sense is that Redfire works best for people nearby Granby or Montague, Mass (their farm locations). I think that perhaps if Redfire were to focus their efforts on fewer distribution points in the big city it might also be easier to manage. read more
