So we had coffees and waited…read moreuntil 12 but the overwhelming smell of the rancid, dead pond water on their so-called terrace out us off. The wall fountain was broken, obviously a long time ago and remains a stagnant mess, neglected. This is such a pity as this museum is fabulous, just fabulous. It's a must-see. . This does a disservice to one of Dublin's true treasures. The High Lane is packed with masterpieces and marvels, this restaurant brings it down - though it has a hip and delightful decor- it is badly run, and the wall fountain and outside interior garden has to be repaitred and maintained. Can we ditch the ugly "farmer" picket fence that surrounds what should be a lovely pond and water feature???

Workers from the nearby offices relax within the jocular interior alongside viewers-of-the-gallery, reveling in the contemporary surroundings made up of buoyant wooden floors and stylish white walls, all of which come together to create a modish environment that nicely compliments the creative milieu of the overall gallery in which to enjoy your tea or lunch break. Tea, coffee, a choice of cakes, quiches, tasty antipasta as well as salads are all on offer, all the selection revealed having been written up in chalk on the blackboard above the cashier counter. This is certainly a laudable place for lunch, and glasses of wine are sold to further your enjoyment. These, together with the actuality that it is the official eatery of an illustrious gallery all affix the café with much significance. However, being fundamentally located in the basement it does feel a smidgen poky and boxed in and whilst the food is sufficient, it is not startling.

I've no doubt the famous scribe himself would have felt right at home here. The interior has an authentic ramshackle feel with a dusty old piano, birdcage and various other bric-a-brac. A red rope prevents punters from exploring upstairs sadly. The cafe serves up a variety of no-nonsense fair, with homemade soups, tasty sandwiches and cakes all on offer at reasonable prices. I always admire somewhere brave enough to serve imaginative soup flavours outside of the crowd-pleasing chicken and vegetable bracket. A steaming bowl of Garlic soup was the ideal antidote to the damp afternoon outside on my visit. Cobalt also boats a lovely leafy-green garden area, the perfect urban escape if the weather is forgiving.

One of the hottest days of the year and we were dragging around a suitcase and in desperated need of a coffee having been awake since 6am. (Surely flights shouldn't go that early?) So in we went. It was a light, high-ceilinged room painted a refreshing Frenchish shade of light blue. Large plants in the corners, a piano, some interesting paintings and little flowers gave the place a vibe which was both elegant and relaxing. We only ordered coffee, however there was a range of yum-looking food available too, as well as an outside garden to enjoy it in. The price was reasonable, the service friendly and we were by no means rushed out afterwards. Will happily return.

The staff were friendly and it was busy, but not too full. I came in a little after 130pm, and I think I'd been in a bit earlier there would have been longer lunch queues. If there is a queue it's worth the wait. I haven't had a Reuben sandwich probably since I left Canada in 2016 (Reuben's are American, but you can get them all over Canada too). Dark rye bread, corned beef, sauerkraut, swiss cheese, dill pickle, and Russian dressing. It was delicious. Pickles aren't a staple on Reuben sandwiches, but I love pickles and was happy with this addition. It adds a nice little tang, along with the dressing. The soup was warm and delicious with a bright tomato flavour. Soup changes daily. Portions were quite large. I just got the soup and sandwich and when I ordered I wondered if it would be enough. It was. My tummy was quite happy after lunch here. I'll be back for sure. Or maybe I'll just order in, because they have free delivery in D1.
