Fast forward to recently, my girlfriend and I got back into collecting Pokémon cards. When she suggested giving The Collector another try, I was hesitant, but we decided to check it out again. To their credit, the pricing has improved compared to what I remembered, even though it still tends to be on the higher side. We also met a few people there and started making friends, which made the experience more enjoyable. Unfortunately, over time, those friendships seemed to fade for no apparent reason. It started to feel like we were being singled out or treated differently, and the overall atmosphere became uncomfortable. Whether that was intentional or not, it left us feeling unwelcome and targeted. Because of that experience, we've decided not to return. While there are some positive aspects to the store, the overall environment no longer feels like a place where we want to spend our time.

You would never know it from the outside--a former brick family pharmacy-- but they've transformed the inside into a medieval castle, with a common hall in the front and a room like a castle den in the far back. The owner realized we were first-time visitors and gave us a tour. Every time we turned a corner or opened the door, my mouth dropped. There are tables for RPG or tabletop gamers at the far end of the front common room/shop space, but there are also a bunch of tables in the far back den room--which, it turns out, they also rent out for private parties. The shop inventory looked like they had a lot of items for miniatures, RPGs, and Magic the Gathering. However, they also had a respectable board game area right up front. They can also order most games they don't carry, I was informed. In sum, nice place to browse for board games and a VERY cool place for a group to hang out--or have a private party! Weather during our holiday break was dreary gray. But road conditions were good, so we looked for…read morenew experiences. K-10 Model Trains was at the top of our "to try" list. The approach is through what you might think of as a small "warehouse district" in Maryville. You park, walk through the front entry, and find a model train hobby shop on the right. The operation is "cash only," and looked like the hobby shop I remember from my hometown. Just beyond the store area is the doorway to a very large room in which a large model train layout has been constructed (dimensions are 60' by 70', according to the website). There's a little cash donation box, if you're motivated to contribute to the cause, which I was. But no one put any pressure on me to donate. It being the Saturday afternoon before New Years Day, the place was pleasantly crowded with mainly men and boys running the trains. We met up with a regular named "Jack," who gave us the history. We spent about 30 minutes watching the action. But if you were fortunate to control a train, considering buying one, or even dreaming about constructing your own layout, then I imagine you might want to stay a long time. I went to A&R Paints & Crafts on a Saturday looking for a RC helicopter. I really didn't know…read moreexactly what I needed to get or really what I wanted. When I walked in the door I was promptly greeted by the owner who was very friendly. He asked me if I needed any help. After I told him I was interested in a RC helicopter he asked me several questions about what I wanted to do with said helicopter. After he showed me several model and options, he then let me test fly them. What kind of store nowadays lets you test something out before you buy? I quickly learned that flying a RC helicopter requires a lot of skill that I currently don't have so I decided to wait to determine what I really wanted. I will definitely be back here to buy when I'm ready. P.S. during my research of trying to determine which route to go I discovered A&R Paints & Crafts' prices are the same or better than most on-line retailers. This proves why you should shop local.

Inventory consists of newer comics, trade paperbacks, graphic novels, art books, board games, trading card games, toy figures, statues, model kits, and model paints. Items not in stock can be ordered for you. There is a long wall displaying the latest issues of comics, and there are boxes of back issues. They focus on newer comics, so you will not find older comics here. If you plan to get an ongoing comic series, then it is recommended that you use the pull-and-hold service and create a pull list. Most comic shops offer this service and can reserve and set aside titles for you to pick up at your convenience. Pull lists and subscriptions help comic shops determine which titles and quantities to order for the entire store.
