Before ordering the scallops, I asked the water if the scallops were good, that I don't like poor scallops. He confirmed they were 3 large scallops, that the scallop dish had improved. In fact, the woman seating us said the same thing when I asked her, that the scallops had improved over past days. Instead, I received 4 scallops that ranged in size from medium, to medium small, to small, to very small. I tried the small scallop and it was very overcooked and rubbery. The waiter agreed the dish was unacceptable and exchanged it for the eggplant dish. So both my partner and I had the eggplant dish. The eggplant was mushy through the majority of it, but not on the edges. Mediocre quality. The gumbo soup was quite good. The onion soup was passable as it had little broth given the quantity of onions and almost no bread. In short, we expected much higher quality main courses at the dining room and it was poor quality. The waiter apologized and offered excuses of supply issues, being open only about a week, and power failures. But we believe the dining room has a captive audience and so does not focus on quality, which is very disappointing. My partner discussed our very poor quality (aka horrible) meals with his friend who stayed in Yellowstone last year. His friends ate at the dining room and also said the food was terrible. One of us got the lobster sliders, which are described as consisting of lobster and seafood salad (read: imitation crab meat/surimi). It was less lobster and more seafood salad, but wasn't bad. I got the crab cake sandwich, which I found to be actually pretty well-executed. The cost of our meal, without any drinks, was a little under $100 before tip. Yeah, that was more than we hoped to spend but it was better than eating the Clif bars and trail mix that we had in our backpacks. You are provided a buzzer when ready so you can shop the store for gifts or groceries in the mean time. I wasn't very hungry and grabbed chili and huckleberry float which hit the spot for me. Neither item was to write home about, but took care of topping off prior to getting back on the road for some more park adventure. Should it be crowded there is a to go kiosk in which you can order and not wait to be seated. There are other options as well if coffee and a quick snack or hotdog is to your liking the grocery side has that counter. There are also some quick bite sandwiches one can grab on that side as well. Prices are what are to be expected within this venue, but not over the top. The food: -Smoked trout deviled eggs - I love smoked fish and roe, but these were so overpoweringly fishy that neither of us even wanted to eat the last one. -Tomahawk pork chop with potatoes, apple cider reduction, pickled brussels sprouts - the pork and reduction was fantastic, if small. Potatoes were great. Brussels sprouts were mostly leaves. You know, like when you take off the outer layers when you cook them because otherwise a bunch just fall off? Those. About 80% leaves with very few actual sprouts to bite into. -Braised buffalo cheeks with polenta, pearl onions, carrots, kale - the buffalo was great. Kale and carrots were fine. Polenta was bland. Onions were undercooked. -Flourless chocolate cake - best thing we had besides the pork chop, but that's not a surprise -Meat and cheese board - in a word, LAZY. The menu describes it as a "selection of cured meats and artisan cheeses, pepperoncini, seasonal jam, grilled baguette, seasonal fruit, marcona almonds." What we got: bread so crispy it was painful to eat; wedges of goat cheese and what I think was gouda with chiles; a little pile of salami slices and two *whole* slices of mortadella folded over, not cut at all, did they expect us to eat whole pieces?; and the not-at-all-seasonal fruit which was about one-sixth of a green apple, thinly sliced, and a single strawberry, sliced, but with the green tops still on (!!). The absolute kicker though: the "seasonal jam" was one of the worst things either of us have ever tasted in our lives. I asked what it was and one server said olive spread and one server said onion jam. It looked and tasted like neither. We have no idea what it was, but it tasted like sweaty gym socks. It had me questioning if it was made with durian. It was THAT BAD. Service was completely disinterested. We weren't even there at a busy time, but we had empty drinks for half the meal, and they couldn't even answer fundamental questions about the menu (including but not limited to the "seasonal jam" debacle above). I love love love the hotel. But I will not eat at this restaurant again. I am glad I changed our weekend breakfast plans to eat here and made our own breakfasts in our room instead.
