The plan worked great: got off the train at Beverly Shores, grabbed some snacks, rented some bikes. They even found us one with a basket to carry our supplies, and recommended a nice loop to the Century of Progress Houses nearby, which was easy to do in the way to the State Park. On the return, I screwed up and didn't allow enough time to get back to meet the train. I turned in my bike, but my son got to the train platform just as it was time to leave. I ended up leaving his bike on the platform and calling the store to come get it, and they covered for my bonehead move. In short, they went above and beyond what I expected. We had a great time, apart from having to rush back, but that was all my fault. Highly recommend.

This is a pretty nice rapids course in south bend, Indiana. It's about a half mile long rapids…read morecourse and you can go alone or fit up to 6 per raft. It's not insanely difficult but the rocks on the rapids do make it a bit difficult- hit one of them and you're flipping for sure (I did today). I don't like that you have to walk the half mile back to the start to do it again, but it's a nice course overall, just a pretty short rapids course - you're on the river for about 5-10 minutes. There is no "break" sections in the water - the rapids are non stop just FYI. Fun place though, I would recommend.

Whitewater rafting in the urban midwest! When you live in the midwest as I do, you learn to dig…read moredeep for new outdoor ideas. Finding this place was the equivalent of striking gold!! East Race Waterway is a man-made whitewater route using the water from the St. Joseph River. The course is about a half mile long and it takes roughly five minutes to navigate. You have three main options to use the race. Non-kayak owners (renters) can choose from the inflatable doubles kayak (seats two..of course) or a large raft (3-6 passengers). Rides in the inflatable kayak or large raft are $5 per person, per ride. If you bring your own kayak it's $15 for the day. The rented boats come with oars, life jackets and a helmet, so you don't need to bring those pieces of equipment. As for the race, you're going to get wet. Let's call it soaked! The race contains category II whitewater rapids and in at least three spots, you're going to get a rush of water thrust upon you. It doesn't take much experience to figure out how to guide your boat and if you go at the rapids head on you won't capsize. We watched many go over though, and that's because they broke the cardinal rule of hitting the rapids with a sideways boat. Even if you capsize it's no big deal. There's a few things you'll need to bring or consider. First, a soled shoe that covers at least the backside of your heal and straps across the top is mandatory. Basically, anything except open-toed flip-flips will work. Hard sole water shoes like Keen's work the best. Remember that you're going to get wet, I mean soaked..so phones, car keys, jewelry and loose sunglasses are all a really bad idea. If you have to bring keys make sure you bring a ziplock bag and have a zipped pocket to store them in. The water isn't nearly as dirty as some claim and there's a hose with clean water at the end of the race to rinse with. All the same I'd still recommend wearing older clothing if you can. This place is a total blast and a unique opportunity for mid-westerners. The race is only open June-early August and only on the weekends, so be sure to plan this one carefully. We'll certainly be back!

While I think they performed the work I asked to my satisfaction and quicker than I had expected I won't be returning for any future work done because every time I was there in person talking to the owner I had gotten a really weird vibe from him and a pretty dismissive attitude like he either couldn't be bothered with listening to my questions and took little to no interest in engaging in conversation with me. It was a feeling as if I was bothering him by being there. Perhaps this is just his personality and this is how he treats all his customers in person but it really left me with a bad feeling like he didn't want to be bothered with me at all. The other staff members were friendly and the first time I interacted with the owner I figured it to just be a one off that maybe he was having a bad day, but then when I went back to pick up my bike after they serviced it, again my conversations with him were just off, very dismissive to me and I tried to just shake it off that OK, he was having another bad day. Then I went back a couple of weeks later with a bike I had just bought off Facebook marketplace from someone and asked him if he would take a quick glance at it and let me know if he thought it needed anything done to it such as a tune up or anything, and I had started to tell him that to me, the inexperienced bike repair person it looked in pretty good condition but I wanted someone with experience to look it over real quick to see if they could tell if it needed anything and I had asked him about possibly any ideas what kind of frame the bike was from since it had been repainted and did not have the stickers on it anymore. He took the bike from me looked down at it for a few second and squeezed the rear brake and lifted the bike up while pressing down on the brakes then very dismissively said well I don't see anything wrong with it at all and how do you expect me to guess what kind of frame this bike possibly is. It was just a sarcastic dismissive tone with me and this had been the third interaction already with him. At that point It was clear that for whatever reason he just did not want to help me at all, and I said Thank you and left the store. The second bike did end up needing a new freewheel because the chain kept slipping but I took the bike to another bike shop in Michigan City and the customer service at that bike shop was like night and day difference. The owners at the other bike shop were actually very intrigued about the bike and spent a couple of minutes talking about it and gave me some good guesses about the maker of the frame and explained in detail why they felt the frame was a higher end touring bike. The bike shop in Michigan City will have my business from now on as they did not treat me like I was bothering them.
