From bad to worse…read more First, air conditioning was out for 2 MONTHS during peak summer heat. Now, the A/C is back on but there are no paper towels for cleaning equipment and the men's locker is a urine-soaked mess all the time. Never cleaned. Oh, and no paper towels in there either. Unsanitary and gross, annoying teens who drop weights and hog machines while they drool on their phones. Can we at least mandate shirts and footwear? Why are so many running around with their shoes off? This place is a joke. All signs point to closing soon since PureGym is investing zero money in upkeep. Canceling membership.

They have sauna, cardio machines, free weights, attached weights, a climbing wall, free cycling classes, and low priced yoga classes there. There is 24/7 access inside the gym by scanning your military ID. Traffic seems to pick up around 3 PM on a weekday. The gym did not seem too crowded though. I noticed most of the gyms on base like this one are frequented by active duty soldiers more than spouses & dependents. If you have free access to these gyms on base and want to avoid unnecessary traffic, gas mileage fees, and paying for gym membership, this is the best plan to select. I never have to wait in line to use a cardio machine or attached weights. All the machines and equipment in this gym and other gyms are up to date.

*Atmosphere: I've been going to Halo Fitness since October…read more2024. For CrossFit specifically, the energy is great, and you get to learn how to do the movements correctly, but at times (mainly when I first started), I've felt a bit judged and lost. It really depends on the instructor and the time you go. Hyrox, on the other hand, is great since you're usually in groups, which makes it feel more structured and supportive. All of the peak instructors I've had have been really friendly and motivating! The owner is also very welcoming and encourages bringing friends, offering a free trial class so you can see if it's a good fit. *Workouts: Classes usually have about 10-25 people, and you can go at your own pace. I typically go 4-6 times a week, switching up which classes I take. When I first started, the workouts felt tough, but over time, they've become much more manageable (results, yay!). Personally, I'm one of the most unmotivated people when working out alone, and they do a great job of encouraging you to show up at least once a week. The classes are a mix of bodyweight exercises, weights, and cardio, so there's always variety. *Pricing: I pay $159 a month for unlimited classes (~$6.65 a class if you go 6 days a week), which also includes 24/7 access and amenities like massage chairs and saunas. When I first started, I was on the $99 plan for two classes a week, which is a good option if you're not ready to commit fully. *Overall Thoughts: Halo Fitness is a great option for anyone looking for that little extra push. If you're new to CrossFit and have the time, I'd HIGHLY recommend going a bit early and asking questions so you don't injure yourself and don't feel so lost walking around, wondering what you need for the workout and which stations aren't taken.

I'm currently on my 5th week of a 6 week boot-camp (cycle #12-Shout-out to my fellow Dirty Dozen!)…read moreand first week of yoga (cycle #3) and I must confess, I absolutely love everything about Nova Strength and Conditioning! The box is tucked away at the very end of an industrial park in Springfield, right off Braddock road, there is ample parking on both sides of the building, and it comes equipped with everything you would expect of a Crossfit box, plus they have all sorts of fun Strongman stuff. In addition to Crossfit and Strongman, they also offer Olympic Lifting classes, Yoga, personal training, and complete the spectrum with additional nutrition classes. The owners, Erin and Sarah, really make an effort to get to know each new person and push you to perform each movement to the best of your ability. I love their programming, their desire to see you succeed and their ability to foster such a warm and welcoming environment to everyone-regardless of fitness level. I also love the emphasis on team building with blog entries, Facebook groups and weekly emails letting you know what's coming up. Trust me, if you are thinking to trying NOVA S&C you really should! Chances are, you will not regret it... I know I don't.

Background: 4 years, 15 to 20 hours a week in a CrossFit box…read more I did a session with the Olympic weightlifting crew while visiting Washington D.C. First and foremost, I loved the atmosphere; it feels of CrossFit at its roots. There's a large open matted area. With only a single garage door to the outside world, the air is warm and vibrant. Speed ropes, mobility equipment, lifting platforms, rings, etc. are all as expected. I greatly enjoyed the coaches and supportive athletes. Tom was focused, constantly providing constructive and tactful feedback to his team. Even when people weren't lifting, they wouldn't just wander off on their phones. Rather, when it wasn't your turn to lift, it was your turn to motivate. I wasn't there long enough to get a sense of how competitive this box is. At the very least, there's plenty of open gym time.

Empower Fitness has everything I wasn't getting at Oak Marr: small, uncrowded classes (that you reserve a spot for); classes on holidays (Memorial Day, July 4, Labor Day...); workout routines that change regularly and often; and, most importantly, attentive instructors. They teach the proper form for each exercise and keep an eye on you during class, giving suggestions and encouragement. All fitness levels are welcome, and the instructors provide modifications to accommodate ability and injuries. I've been going 12x/month for a year (4-5x/week during the summer) and I am still injury-free and looking forward to every class.
