I have sold numerous items with Recess. Marie, the owner is great to deal with. I have brought in several items and she sold 99% of the items she selected for consignment. She has a very good eye and knows what will sell. Their bookkeeping is honest and her share of the commission is fair at 50/50. The Crossroads Trading company in Santa Monica offered me $5 for a beautiful pair of Purple Label Ralph Lauren boots. I declined their offer. Recess sold them within a month of getting them from me and sent me a check for $150. read more

One thing I love about shopping in the Fairfax District is that you will find lots of cool vintage stores here in the area. Recess was awesome. Liars! Brought in a pair of Christian Louboutin platform sandals very cute and wore them a few times, too high, and decided to sell. Called the store first, the day prior. They changed the price from what was quoted on the phone. So the girl took the shoes over to her manager, so she said* and returned to the counter saying the shoes were too scuffed to sell. Makes no sense. I've never seen anyone wear a Louboutin, and the bottom had no wear. Didn't like the strange look received when the door was finally opened either, standing there trying to be buzzed in. After thinking about the customer service received, I called back requesting the manager. She then states she told the girl to say the shoe was out of season. Really?? No sandals are sold or bought in California year-round? It is obvious you are PROFILERS, yet you are located in a community often speaking about the way people treat you on a consistent basis. Next trip there will be secret shoppers just to prove this point. OWNER, don't reply. Just get it together unless you want the store on the news for poor customer service and differential treatment. I would bet money that the TV show 'Pose' uses Recess to source much of their 80's era gorgeousness. If they don't, that show is definitely missing out on a treasure trove. Troop Beverly Hills comes to mind when thinking of the Phyllis Nefler-esque style sequins and feathers that adorn Recess' interior. Beautiful wraps, stunning jackets, and elegant dresses, all from the age of wearing your wealth and success as brightly and tightly as possible. I loved so many pieces here, but consistently seem to find myself more of a fan of the 50's and 60's - tight waisted bell dresses, over slinky silk and scrunched single shoulder numbers. But if anyone could bring me back to the 80's, you can bet it would be Recess. The service and style were amazing and I loved the gentleman who ran security's suit and bow tie. This is by far one of the best consignment shops ever. The selection is beautiful, unique, colorful and well put together. I always find beautiful vintage and/or designer things every time I visit. Recess LA is an awesome discovery. The store is chic and the staff really friendly. I met the owner and she was really down to earth. She told me that Recess LA is a mom and pop store which made me fall in love with them even more :) I think it's time we support small businesses as opposed to large corporations. If you live in the LA area, definitely stop by often as they get "new" items in. Another thing I love about Recess LA is the re use of beautiful clothing that are pieces of art. The owner is a professional. She knows designer clothing from known pieces by Yves Saint Laurent to exquisite rare pieces from not known designers. In fact, the vintage pieces are artworks. They are lovingly picked out for what is genuinely interesting and beautiful not necessarily for what would "sell". Sure, that is part of it, but you can tell when you walk inside this little museum of delicious fabrics and accessories filled with character and colors that remind you why a particular combination looks so good. Anyways; I've attempted to consigned with them on my first attempt and realized quickly this place was no joke. Unlike other places that sort through your belongings that you think worthy of display and pay, Recess is more of a curatorial effort that keeps seasons, quality and style in mind. Don't get offended or take it personal. Instead learn from them - them being the people that call the shots on the clothing and other items for consigning. I did, my second attempt went great and I sold my first piece about a month ago with them. Extremely fair on the pricing and all the content in the contract makes sense. I have consigned from Renaissance in Santa Barbara to 3020 Designer Resale, Decades and other places in and around Los Angeles and this is the highest service and fastest turnaround place in town. The staff is great, the communication is beyond great. They pay twice a month too. I wish the store was three times the size as I have so many things to consign. I wish they had room for it all. Ok one of my new favorite stores in LA. My friend got a head piece for Halloween, and I was absolutely obsessed. She gave me the name of the store, and I ran over the following day. The owner Marie was there to great me as I flew in the door telling her I needed Ice Cream Cone headbands (which you all should go check out they are amazing!!). She had a few left as it was a few days before Halloween, and I tried them all on. Unfortunately none of them were my color, or wanted to stay on my head. I told her my dream colors, and she said she would try and have custom ones made. The next day, at around midday I got an email that my two headpieces had been custom made and already delivered! Lots of designer and vintage clothes - all in incredible shape. Everything is laid out really nicely. It was a lot of fun just to browse. I recently discovered Recess. What a coup! As the other reviews say, Marie is absolutely delightful. I consigned some items and was very impressed with the professional way she handled this, and the fact that she sold some of them immediately. They have a fantastic selection of clothes, shoes, bags and jewelry. One would expect mainly classic vintage items, but especially in the accessories and jewelry there are some terrific modern items too. Each item is very carefully selected by Marie and her husband. I recently cleaned out my home and got rid of half of my belongings, many of which were designer clothes. I have had a bad experience before with another well known consignment store in LA where they actually gave my clothes away without any kind of notice. They used to mail it back to you, or at least notify you, but their customer service has just gone down hill. Luckily, I found Marie, who is absolutely amazing! I recently contacted Marie with an inquiry for a quote regarding my Saint Laurent purse. Although, she appeared professional and sound through email, that was not the case as i visited her shop on La Brea. Her attitude was beyond unprofessional and arrogant. As we went through an quote process, you could feel the condescending tone in which she speaks, judge you and size you up to whatever she was comfortable telling herself. As a shop owner, you understand your business and customers and if you're a down to earth, easy going, fun loving person, she will make you feel like she knows better. Her source of pricing: finding your item on other consignment platforms or google.com. I understand that we must compare prices to produce the best quote, but honestly, it seems like she has no clue what she is doing. You either know the product or you don't. Well, Marie, i will be sure to never send anyone even feet within your shop. Your attitude is poor and you don't listen when customers speak. My advice: Take a leadership class and learn to communicate as an effective human being. read more
