Recess is the main restauraunt serving the Hilton Garden Inn Birmingham Brindleyplace - I actually came here after a rather funny turn of events, being hungry late in the evening when I was staying at the dreadful Hampton across the way on Broad Street, I decided to come in here - the day before I was actually staying in the hotel.
They do have some rather unusual dishes on the menu, including a risotto which doesn't sound too appetising and some strange sandwich fillings - one thing I liked is they did label GF on some menu items, but not on every item which could be modified to be gluten-free, such as the soup.
The staff here seemed super friendly, they didn't mind that I come in rather late when they were due to close soon and he just said "I've managed to get the kitchen staff to do something as long as you can decide quickly", which is pretty reasonable. I opted for the soup of the day, and my friend had the same. Mine came with gluten-free bread, which was good.
The soup tasted good, it was seasoned well and fresh in a restauraunt with a rather nice atmosphere, it felt like one of those restaurants just modernised by Gordon Ramsay - the breakfast area did look good too but unfortunately, I didn't try it on this occasion.
The prices were reasonable, especially when combined with Meerkat Meals which gives you 2-4-1 on food after buying any insurance package with them, which lasts a year - meaning you could buy a £1 one-day travel insurance in the UK and get 241 for a year!
Good quality soup and service warrant a three-star rating - I would say the location is too far out compared to Birmingham city centre and it isn't worth coming here unless staying at this hotel or a nearby one, and some of the menu items are a little strange and shows they're trying to be hip in some areas and that just doesn't cater for the masses. read more
