When one thinks of the words 'rural' and 'farmland,' these are not terms one hears a lot in Bergen…read moreCounty, NJ, one of the most heavily populated counties to surround New York City. Yet the county has a rich history in farming and agriculture from the late 1600s up into the 1970s. The small farms in north Jersey do more than just provide fruits and vegetables for our tables. They are open-air classrooms to our agricultural past, places to buy fresh produce and baked goods to support local family farm stores, and places for interesting special events and outings for families. Being the first Saturday after Labor Day, my partner and I got a head start on the apple cider donuts made fresh daily, just oozing with apple cidery goodness and never hot. Since 1973, located on Airmont Avenue in Mahwah, Secor Farms is a reminder of Bergen County's rural past and one of the last farms left in the area, passed down through three generations. Upon arrival in the afternoon, parking was not an issue with only a handful of vehicles. However, the farm comes alive starting Sept 15 with a corn maze, hayrides, pumpkin picking, and a petting zoo where reservations are required, with all sorts of activities. Their outside garden centers had pumpkins, gourds, fall decorations, and mums for purchase. We went inside their marketplace full of produce and managed to get a bag of mixed apple cider donuts and a quart of apple cider. These baked donuts have the sweet tartness of apple cider with a coating of cinnamon sugar or powdered sugar. They were soft, moist, tender, and tastefully delicious. The price was reasonable. The staff was friendly. We can recommend this place.

A friend and I made a trip to upstate NYC, which could hardly be complete without apple cider…read moredonuts and cider in the autumn! We went to Thompson's Cider Mill last November given a high recommendation. They sold a variety of local goods, e.g. fresh apples, cider, baked goods, and hard cider tastings among other products. We washed down the fresh apple cider donuts with cold cider, and the moment was heavenly! The cider was refreshing without being overly sweet or acidic. The donuts were a perfect, slightly dense, but super moist cake that seemed to both crumble and melt in your mouth. We opted for the sugar dusted donuts, which were also not overly sweet, but had a nice textural contrast to the donut body. The donuts are also rather filling! The staff was friendly, and they gave us the impression of a well knit work family. We purchased a quart of cider, a dozen donuts, and quite a lot of apples from their variety for approximately $32, which we felt was overall a good deal. I believe the farm grounds go deeper and is open to the public (with activities for kids), but we could not explore further because we were already running late having had to make a detour because the address listed on Google was different from where the market was set up. During autumn, they open shop at a different main address to allow for more parking, and the entrance addresses may be inconsistent. We would definitely want to come back for second helpings next autumn!

An artisanal blend of crisp natural flavor, burst of apple, semi-dry without the synthetic taste that store purchased cider have. Open weekends, we will return for the fall harvest next year. Keep in mind they taste hard cider, apple picking is not offered. It is similar to a wine tasting atmosphere, so I would not bring kids.

Going to the farm is a great way to get some safe and socially distanced fun while still…read moreappreciating the beauty that New York has to offer during the fall season! We had a wonderfully impromptu weekend sojourn to Fable Farm this past Saturday to pick up some local cider and donuts. Little did we know that Fable is also home to a slew of chickens and goats who are packed with personality and pluck, and totally made our day with their sweet and adorable antics! We had a great time watching the animals hang out and peck around their spacious pen enclosure, safe from the masked onlookers who came to gawk at the majesty of farmland critters. Honestly, any interactions with cute barnyard characters is a high point to my day, so Fable gets five stars on that alone! We also loved the local farmer's market that sets up here, and even though it was close to closing for the day, we were able to browse around for a bit. I didn't buy anything, but the produce looked fresh and there were lots of other locally made goods like honey and soaps. We'll be back for sure next time when we have more time to look around at all the offerings! The local cider and scrumptious donuts were our initial mission, and they did not disappoint. The cider was juicy and tangy, and I couldn't stop drinking it for the rest of the evening once we got home. I was able to limit myself to one cider donut (brushed with cinnamon sugar - yum!), but that was so difficult! My boyfriend's mom was delighted with the cider donuts we brought home for her, too. I highly recommend checking out Fable Farm for a low-key autumn afternoon activity!
