Would not recommend. Small town hole in the wall with ideas of being a steakhouse. Prices are outrageous on a menu that's a piece of paper. No description of the entree. Calamari sauce tastes like ketchup and vinegar. Terrible. Chef seems to be trying way to hard to reinvent dishes. Calamari came out looking like cheese sticks... save your money!!!! What a great place. Had the chicken nachos, which were excellent. Maincourse was the cheese enchiladas which were stellar. Great service in a fun little place in Alpine Texas. After weeks of travel on the road for work, this is the best food I've had anywhere or within within recent memory. Definitely will be back, probably tomorrow. read more

They had fettuccine Alfredo on the menu but had completely changed the sauce to a mushroom pesto. Mushrooms were tasty but overall, a disappointment. Husband did enjoy his citrus chicken. Dessert was delicious! read more

Not a place with good food. The staff is nice but I don't go eat out for nice people, I go for good food. I ordered the Reata's Salad Bowl; the pasta was not fully cooked and the pesto sauce that is on it was tragic, the chicken was not seasoned, and overall the salad was...sad. My husband ordered the Starter Sampler; the only decent thing on the entire plate was the bacon wrapped asparagus and the sampler didn't arrive with everything that was promised. We both ate about 1/3 of our respective plates before deciding that a beer would be more satisfying for the rest of our dinner. We will not be returning here...ever. read more

This restaurant is cute, quaint, and has friendly staff. The food is subpar and cost an arm and a leg. Margaritas are too sweet with little alcohol. Salmon was dry, masked by a thick coating of flavorless sauce. Chicken fried steak was just okay. It was tender and the gravy was good, so that helped. The crab stuffed peppers were bleh too, very expensive for only 3 peppers and some grits. Everything was filling, that's it. These towns (Alpine, Marfa, and Ft Davis) seem to make all their money by charging out the wah-zoo for low quality, mediocre food to tourist with no other options. Well played, but on my next trip down south, I'll bring my own food to cook. It would be nice if at least ONE restaurant around here would put a little effort into their dishes. BEWARE! It is spring break and the place was packed but the service was totally screwed up and the food was mediocre at best. We had a 7pm reservation but we were finally seated at 7:40 after repeated checking and people with later reservations being seated ahead of us. We waited 30 minutes to order and over 30 minutes to get our food! When we left at 9:30 a family of 3 next to us, who had ordered 15 minutes before us, still hadn't gotten their food!!! We were excited to make it here after reading and seeing so much about it. Well, in a nutshell we thought that the Century Grill in the Holland was better. Hubby started with the Grand Margarita and was let down. Said it tasted like a bad machine drink. Maybe a mix? Not real. His second drink, an Old Fashioned, wasn't much better. We tried the 14oz ribeye and it was really good. We had a bit of a mixup with our server on the sides but the jalapeño cheese grits were great as was the bacon wrapped asparagus. The bacon mac & cheese was also tasty. My chicken fried steak was much anticipated but it fell short. Good flavor but a darned tough piece of meat. Tough to cut, tougher to chew. It really shouldn't have been served. The chocolate lava cake was disappointing. It was lukewarm so there wasn't a "molten" middle. Dry cake with lackluster flavor. I guess it's not fair to get a burger and have expectations out here, especially since I live in Austin where we have some really great ones. But I did, and I was disappointed. The bun was cold on top. The meat seemed to be previously frozen, not fresh, but had a good char taste. I expected a half pound burger for the price, but it appeared to be about a third pound, which would have been ok, had it been fresh meat. There was a sideways blob of cheddar on it and veggies on the side. The hand cut fries were soggy and greasy with a seasoning that had strange hints of..sweetness...? For dessert, I ordered pecan pie. It was a little pie with some meh vanilla ice cream on the side and a drizzle of chocolate over it all. The pie was good. As a Texan, I don't need or want a drizzle of chocolate on my pie, but it was still the best thing I had. The service was mostly good. Just because I'm alone doesn't mean I don't want dessert. The waitress asked the table of five but not me and had to take the check back when I asked if I could order dessert. The staff was very friendly overall and the manager was helping out and checking with folks. I didn't have the heart to complain about the food, since it is pretty good for a small town (it sounds mean either way, I guess...). The atmosphere is really Texas-y and enjoyable. I'd recommend going, but maybe order a salad. They looked delicious. read more

We had reservations from weeks before and they accidentally gave our table to someone else so we had to sit out in the cold or wait forever for another table. I enjoyed this fine dining experience at the historic Reata Restaurant in Alpine, TX which is home base for this week long road trip with my baby bro. We started with jalapeño cheddar corn muffins and pecan cranberry biscuits akin to soft scones served with a compound butter. Greg started with their house salad with a pico vinaigrette dressing which I taste tasted and found it a delightful kick on with crisp romaine and villagio marziano tomatoes. Entree was a Citrus Pecan encrusted chicken breast with a honey mustard glaze with rice pilaf and sugar snap peas. The crust on the chicken had a nice crunch but the glaze sent us into foodie nirvana. The combination of honey and dijon mustard with a light almost clear glaze was exquisite. Sugar snap peas were lightly sauteed and crisp tender accompanied with a nicely done rice pilaf. Greg had the pecan pie with a homemade vanilla ice cream drizzled all over with chocolate sauce. Our server Kirsten was friendly, helpful and very efficient. The surroundings of the Reata were rustic yet elegant, with a cozy warm bar area and an inviting patio area. The service was terrible. We arrived at 6:15 for a 6:30 reservation and were pleasantly surprised we could be seated early. We had to be out of there by 7:30 to make the McDonald Observatory. We were both really excited for the peppercorn tenderloin and ordered them medium rare. I asked for a glass of the house Merlot with the dinner. When the server came out with the tenderloin she said, "Two tenderloins medium well!" My wife and I just looked at each other and gritted our teeth. (It was actually cooked medium and not medium well.) I then asked about my glass of Merlot and she said they were working on it. Midway through the meal she returned with the glass of Merlot and apologized saying they lost the ticket. My wife and daughter wanted a dessert and after a presentation they ordered the pecan pie and creme brûlée. Ten minutes later the server returned and said I am sorry but they lost the ticket. The dessert guy is firing it up now. I asked for her to bring me the check and she asked whether we still wanted the desserts. I said yes, but please hurry we have to leave. Of course she immediately brought the check. I gave her a 20% tip. Why? I just chalked it up to her having a terrible day. But then 10 more minutes and the desserts never came! We finally just got up and left. The server then had the gall to call us on the way to the Observatory to make sure everything was "ok". No, for $240 everything was not "ok". I have taken tour groups here three times in the last two years, with an average size of fifteen folks. Always had reservations and was always seated promptly. Service all three times was prompt, efficient and friendly. No mix up in the orders and everything was served hot. My faves were the cilantro-jalapeno soup that had a little "heat" and lots of avaocado. Tenderloin tacos had a delicious sun-dried tomato cream sauce. The pecan pie for dessert was rich and loaded with pecans... The older reviews showed there might have been problems 3 - 4 years ago, but for the last two years, they are serving dishes right out of their cookbooks! The service was great. The food was out fast. The waitresses were very helpful in selecting food. I had the citrus crusted chicken with rosemary honey mustard. Overall, the restaurant was excellent. The menu is a pretty odd mix of American steakhouse food, Mexican food, and comfort food. My mostly Mexican entrées were pretty good, while my friend's steakhouse-ish dinner was just OK. It was underwhelming, especially with the higher Alpine prices. This place will always do well though, since it's one of the few open on Monday nights in Alpine. Our waitress was great, but the hostess could stand to be clearer about what "a seat at the bar" means - to them, that meant "hanging around near the bar until a table in the bar area opens up." We voiced our confusion and they fixed it quickly though. read more
