Near the northernmost entrance to the Market 63 shop, which is actually on the second floor of this building, it's to the left when you're facing it. Just to the right of the escalator. My first Banksy, which is very cool. And since the original location has been altered / changed / torn down, it's awesome that they went to the trouble of recovering and saving this. Now encased in glass for posterity. I love this and I hope that you will, too! [Review 10985 overall, 757 of 2019.]

I used to work as a Protection Officer at the National Gallery of Canada. The guard and dog were on duty next to the Gardiner Expressway, on the north side of the former 90 Harbour Street, also known as the headquarters of the Ontario Provincial Police. Banksy clearly does his research. Despite it's high traffic area of downtown Toronto, it was deceivingly hidden, pinned between the Gardiner and one of the expressway's off-ramps. It was on one of the building's north-facing concrete pillars. After it first went up, it was not long before someone put a dodo on top of the guard's head, and made the dog growl "Grrr!". Then someone wrote "Robbin' Banksy" beside the piece in yellow. The piece stood for awhile, and despite demolition of the building around it - the lone pillar was one of the last things standing at the fenced-in site. It was protected with plywood and some kind of polystyrene foam covering the art on it. "We were ordered to save it," explains Ron Kepic, an estimator with Progreen Demolition, "so that nothing would fall, or hit it, or disturb it in any way." Where it is now, nobody knows.

I don't know how well enforced it is, but feel free to give your parking receipt to someone else when you leave. $8 seems a lot for a waterfall! I was here in July so nothing frozen and no fall colors but still magnificent. a 21 meter (64 foot) cascade roars away. The path through the woods is very well marked and easy to follow up it's clear that some folks think it's okay to wander off the path. I stuck to the route and the observation platform. Partly because I'm a rule follow and partly because I'm the clumsy sort that would fall and hurt myself. Leave only footprints, take only photos. And if you can pick up some of the litter that others have left behind, you're a rockstar! [Review 1460 of 2024 - 138 in Ontario - 22483 overall]

We went from Sherman Falls to Tiffany Falls. The walk is only about 20 minutes along the Bruce Trail. Both Waterfalls look similar though they're so close, so you might as well check both out. If you go during a long weekend as I did, expect more people. More challenging to take a photo without people in your way. There's an upper deck with a better vantage point to take a picture with the waterfall in the background. If you don't mind getting your shoes wet, step in front of the falls for your optimal pic.

Chinese Railroad Workers Memorial - The monument from Bremner Boulevard

Tip: This monument is on Blue Jays Way. You can see it when you look north from Bremner Boulevard…read more The Canadian Pacific Railway was built between 1880 and 1885. It was Canada's first transcontinental railroad that ran between Lake Nipissing in eastern Ontario to the coast of British Columbia. This railroad helped unite the country and support the development of western Canada. Thousands of Chinese immigrants worked on this railroad. They worked hard. They sacrificed. During this five-year railroad development phase, 17,000 men emigrated from China, most from Guangdong province. It is estimated that more than 4,000 workers died during the construction. In addition to facing racism, the immigrants were often given the most dangerous jobs in the already dangerous task of blasting through the Rocky Mountains to lay the Western section of the track. Many were killed by landslides, cave-ins, disease, and explosions. Yesterday, I was walking to Rogers Centre for a company event. I noticed this memorial and took a photo. Little did I know until I got home that I had taken a photo of the Chinese Railroad Workers Memorial. I like discovering a piece of history wherever I am. This one was a good find, as it allowed me to do some research. The Chinese Railroad Workers Memorial in Toronto was erected in 1989, roughly around the same time that SkyDome, the original name of Rogers Centre, next door was also established. The former was created to commemorate the contribution and sacrifice of these Chinese workers. The memorial has a plaque that states, "With no means of going back to China when their labour was no longer needed, thousands drifted in near destitution along the completed track." Tragic. I appreciate that their efforts were noted and their sacrifice has not been forgotten. Eldon Garnet and Franicis LeBouthillier designed this monument. It's a sculpture of two railroad workers lifting timber, and using pulleys and ropes. The boulders at the base are from the Canadian Rockies. This monument was a solid find. I learned so much. I hope to return to pay my respects when I'm not trying to get to a Jays game. (163)

I then head down to Burnhamthorpe Library to renew my library card. I'm driving southbound along Dixie Road. I make a right turn to get to the library's parking lot. I spot a monument to my right. What?! I have been visiting this library for seven years. How come I never noticed this monument until now? After renewing my library card, I walked across the parking lot to check out this special Vietnamese Boat People Monument. This monument was established on November 9, 2019. I wouldn't have seen it that year, as my library card renews every year at the end of September. I frankly can't explain why I never noticed this monument. Perhaps it's the black and grey colours that didn't pop. On Wednesday, there were colourful flowers around the monument that made my head turn. Vi Vi Vo Hung Kiet sculpted this monument, which was built and donated to the City of Mississauga as a gesture of gratitude to Canada by the Vietnamese Canadian community and the Vietnamese Boat People Memorial Association. It commemorates more than a million Vietnamese refugees who escaped the collapse of the Republic of Vietnam on April 30, 1975. Roughly half a million of them lost their lives fleeing by either land or sea. I admired the monument for a while. It's made of bronze and granite. It has a boat that is practically submerged in the sea. There's a family of three looking hopeful at the bird with a maple leaf in the dad's hand. In his other hand is a flag with SOS on it. It's such a thoughtfully crafted statue. I like self-discovery points of interest. I tend to live under a rock, but I'm so glad that I found this monument. It's quite an informative area. There's a map that indicates where Vietnamese refugees moved to seek freedom. North America took in many, with Canada welcoming just over 104,000 refugees to their new home. Details about the historical significance of the Republic of Vietnam's demise, and the struggle to get refugees out of camps and be free are shared in both English and Vietnamese. You can take a load off your feet by sitting down on one of the blocks that comprise a ring around the statue. It was a bit hot to sit down yesterday, but it's nice that you can if you need to. I'm pleased that this monument exists. I'm so glad that I took the time to learn so much about its significance to the Vietnamese Canadian community. (338)
