This was the second job Ray's has done for us and we couldn't be more pleased. Latest was the removal of a large Maple tree and although they cautioned us that they were booked until February or so, they worked us in 2 months early. An estimate was given to us (by hand) the day we called. I do not know the names of the entire crew but Brian K. and Steve M. ground out the stump, dug out the grindings and backfilled with top soil. When they were done, every chip was cleaned up including grassy areas, sidewalks, driveway and street. Three days from start to finish, and at a price we couldn't turn down. read more

Not to be trusted to repair damage the he causes to your property, I recommended him to my neighbor and he damaged her eavestrough downspout and didn't even tell her I called him and he said he would take care of it and he didn't. after contacting him again he doesn't respond to my text or calls. I wouldn't recommend him to anyone for cutting down trees close to there house, with that being said I had paid half for the tree being cut down as it was partly on my property. read more

I had a wonderful experience with Ray's Tree Service! I had a huge pin oak tree that was damaged and needed to come down. It was also located in an awkward, hard to reach location. Ray's had excellent customer service from the first quote until the end of the job! They quoted a reasonable price and they were responsive with scheduling a date. It took them two days to take the tree down and clean up and they clearly communicated throughout the entire process. The workers were friendly and did a phenomenal job with an old, damaged, huge tree! We decided to keep some of the wood and they neatly stacked it for us. The second day, another crew came to clean up and they did an excellent and thorough job! As I was driving on Telegraph, a Ray's Tree Service truck made a left turn directly in front of me to which I had to abruptly brake. A little annoying but not a big deal. The reason for this review is that somehow the driver of Ray's felt the need to give me the finger and visibly holler something to me even though he's the one who was driving recklessly. I have no idea how the crew executes their jobs or how they price their bids; however the character of their employees is a reflection of the company. We had a 70 foot tree in our patio the previous owner called "Fertile Myrtle" for the amount of debris it would shed every summer and fall. We got a few estimates and chose Rays not based on price as much as reputation. The quotes we got were all over the board- Rays was in the middle but I liked the fact they had the proper equipment and safety gear. They originally gave us a date six weeks out due to their backlog, however we were able to secure an earlier date based on a cancellation. We were worried about their ability to access the tree without mangling our fences our shrubs, but they managed to do it without any major damage. A branch did fall and break an outside lamp, but they came the next week and replaced it even without our asking. All things considered I was really impressed with the professionalism and value. read more

We had a large tree between two houses that needed to come down. Everyone said use Ray's. After getting an estimate and signing a contract from Ray's, removal was scheduled to be done in 8 weeks. That came and went with no work being done, as the actual paper work was not submitted. The next excuse was getting approval from the city. Next excuse was neighbors weren't happy and still no permits. Finally after a 6 month wait, they said they couldn't get the truck in my narrow driveway gate so they would have to use a different truck and raised my estimate by 3K. I went with another company that had no excuses and got the tree down in no time at their original estimate they gave me 8 months ago (less than Ray' s). read more

I called up Ray's to have a tree removed that I could tell was well on its way to falling over. They said they came out and looked at it and did an estimate. They said it would be emailed to me the next day. No email. I called. I was told that the guy (Bob) had the estimate but hadn't brought it in to the office. Called the next day. Still no estimate. A week after they said they had done the estimate, THE TREE FELL ON MY HOUSE. Told them never mind. If they can't even get an estimate to me in a timely manner, I'm not gonna hire them to remove it after they wasted my time and the tree fell on my house. Had Votaw Tree Service remove it instead. I called these guys about a tree removal. When they called back with a quote, they said they couldn't do any work until they received a signed contract. I got the contract and decided against the service. However, they showed up one day with no warning and cut the trees down. I called them immediately to tell them I didn't want the service done and they said they would get back to me. A few days later I received the full bill for the service I did not authorize. I called again saying I didn't want the service and wouldn't pay the bill. They called me two-three times a day after that, and finally threatened me with litigation and a bill collector. I agreed to pay a small portion of the bill to make them go away. I think these guys are bullies and crooks. I would never use them for any job again ever. read more

Big storm last night blew down a pear tree in our backyard. I called Rays because we used them for two other trees, and we were very pleased with their service and reasonable price. They had someone here in a couple of hours. Once again, great to deal with, at a very fair price. The guy doing the estimate was knowledgeable, answered all my questions, easy to work with, and gave us several options, but without any pressure or up-sell. They got the job. Called Ray's tree service for a simple tree trimming that I needed for a tree in our front yard. Guy came out, met with me, did his survey and then gave me a price right on the spot. The price was extremely reasonable for the size of the tree, or at least I believe it to be. The tree crew came when they were supposed too, did a wonderful job and then left. The crew cleaned up after themselves and it was as if they were never there. I was extremely impressed with the condition they left the front yard in. The only reason I did not give 5 stars, when the original arborist came and gave me a quote he told me it was going to be 3 weeks before they could get there, no big deal, but I couldn't get a date. I had to request that the company call back and give me a date of when they would be there. I am still unsure if they would have called me with a date if I had not asked for one. They called back, which in and of itself probably should give them 5 stars but then I couldn't get a time of arrival out of them. Not even a window. Despite this minor complaint I would use this service again and plan too in the future. Ray's tree service was worth every penny. read more

I have used Ray's for years to take care of trees at my Kirkwood home. They have always done a great job. A few weeks ago part of an old oak fell on my house during a storm. I called Rays at 8 am next morning and they were here within an hour! Gave me an estimate and came back to do the work a few days later. Ray cut down two trees for us. I was not particularly impressed by the person who gave us the bid, but the crews were great. Sadly, they cracked the patio concrete (in two places). They did send over a handyman to seal the cracks. read more

Worst service ever! Showed up unannounced, now billed me when work is incomplete. Still have a mound of mulch where tree was removed. In the spring of 2017, I hired Ray's Tree Service to spray a gum tree. I was told that in order to do so, plywood would be placed on my lawn so they could get the truck close enough to the tree for propoer treatment. The truck arrived and they started spraying chemical at the tree from the truck which was still parked on the road. Shortly thereafter, a knock on the door - we cannot reach your tree so we are not going to do the job. Several days later Ray's Tree Service arrives again and starts spraying chemical at the tree from the truck which AGAIN was parked on the road. I walked outside and asked why they had not placed plywood on the lawn to reach the tree. The guy told me that it was not necessary and continued to spray from a huge sdistance at a huge, fully leafed out gum tree. This winter tons of gum balls are on the ground. I contatced Ray's and spoke to Bob Bushey and he said the need to place plywood on the lawn to get close enough to the tree never made it to the intruction sheet. I asked if I could get a refund. He said he would talk to the CEO. I just spoke to him after I contacted him (he never followed up on his own). He said "The CEO said there is nothing that can be done". Really? I sent this message in an email on Apr 8, 2017 to Ray's Tree Service: "So you team came here on Friday and began spraying from the street but said they could not treat the entire tree from the road. They were suppose to be back today but I do not believe they did come by. Did they? Is the timing of the treatment getting away from us?" When they did return, they still tried to treat the tree from the street AGAIN with Bradfords and Ash Trees in the way and at along distance from the gum tree. want my money back. . This tree is nearly 4 stories tall. I should not have to pay the price for treating a tree when the treatment was not applied properly. They were suppose to put plywood on the lawn and drive the truck up to the tree. Instead they stayed far from the tree on the road - there is no way they could reach the tree especially with it fully leafed out I do not care that they used "25 gallons of chemicals"...if the chemicals did not reach the tree, they did not do anything but waist their chemicals on my lawn. I want my money back so I can hire someone to clean up these gum ***** or perhaps Ray's Tree Sevice can send a crew out to clean them up in a month. read more

If you don't use Rays you are goofy. They rule. Took down a 75 ft tree in very tight quarters today and dropped branches like they were throwing darts in the pub. We had a big tree fall on our roof. The tree went through our roof in two of my kids' bedrooms. And it punched through the side of my bedroom wall. Luckily, no one was hurt. We got Ray's number from a trusted landscaper. We called, they came out immediately gave us an estimate and worked with our insurance adjuster. It was helpful both were at the house at the same time. Within a couple of hours a crew of 6 arrived prepared and worked until the job was done. The crew we had were polite, willing to answer questions and engaged with my curious children. Most adults would be rude or just ignore them. They cut the tree and removed it. They even cut up a bunch for us to keep for fire wood. They cleaned our property even our backyard which didn't have a lot to rake or take care of. They were professional, courteous, reasonably priced and took measures to ensure no extra damage was done to the house or property while moving a large tree from the roof onto the ground. I highly recommend them if you have an emergency and I will use them when it comes time to do any other tree care. read more

I was very disappointed in Ray's Tree Service. First I live in Kansas City so I was not present at my St Louis home when the work was done. I thought $3000 dollars was a little high for removing two trees. After paying them I find out they were selling the log of my walnut tree to another client. Ethically I feel if the fee was $3000 the profit from my walnut log should have been deducted from my $3000. As my property in St. Louis has many trees next time I need tree work, I will definitely stay away from Ray's read more

Lost a very large tree from a lighting strike in the front of our house. The tree was covering the front yard and driveway. Ray's Tree Service came out within a 1/2 hour of calling them for an estimate. They were the cheapest estimate of the 5 companies I called. They were there the next morning and cut down the tree, removed all limbs, cleaned up ALL of the debris from the storm and even trimmed up (for free) the tree next to it. Fast, Courteous and professional. Will definitely use them again! read more

Our family has used Ray's Tree service for many years and always with great results. Their estimator, Bob, is top notch...very professional, personable and truly knowledgeable. Earlier this year I was awakened by police. We live across the road from an elementary school and a huge limb from our oak tree in the front yard had fallen into an overhead powerline. The limb and powerline were partially in the road and on the sidewalk; our powerline was still energized. As luck would have it this happened while all of the school buses and parents were arriving to drop off their little ones. Police had already notified the power company so I called Ray's Tree Service and explained the emergency. Bob came over and arrived before the utility truck. He oversaw the limb removal by the power company and discovered another enormous damaged branch in danger of falling as well. Thanks to everyone's quick response no one was injured and the problem was corrected quickly. We love these guys. Competitively priced, customer oriented, and very responsive. I had a tree fall on my car and a real gentleman came out to do the bid and even freed my car immediately before he left. He quoted me $1150. I gave him a $600 check and said insurance already agreed to pay $500. When the crew came, they were quick except they never finished the stump, which was supposed to be left with only 4", its currently about 10". I asked if they could take care of two very small dead trees, which they said they'd do for free and I asked about a couple larger branches for trimming on a big tree and they said they'd do it for $90. I gave them $100, cash. I had some illness in the fall and Marcus called me twice. Initially he was very rude. He said I never paid and he said he sent a letter I never received but would check on the $600 check. I never heard back and then he left Ray's and late January Cheryl called me (his replacement). She hadn't heard about the $600 check and said she'd look into it. Next thing I know, I'm getting letters from attorneys that they want to represent me in my lawsuit against Ray's! I called Cheryl and she said she would look into the check and call me back again. I called her several times and finally paid the bill in full by phone, after checking myself with my bank and incurring a cancelled check fee. Then I get served papers and call again. Cheryl said she was going to check into and call me back. Another two weeks goes by and I call and she says I have to talk to the attorney who had the story all wrong and said he was happy I had copious notes. Turns out he had sent me letters and they all had the wrong address!! They came here to cut the tree down, you'd think they had the address. He was going to send me another letter I never received. I had to call several times and finally asked to speak to the owner. I only got to the "manager" who was so condescending and insolent. Turns out the crew said I never gave them the $100! Which was never in the contract in the first place anyway! But He bullied me into paying it again by phone. Then he said the suit would go forward and I needed to talk to the attny who never called me back and I had to reach out to again the day before the court date. He told me, "that was dismissed days ago, you should have received notice." BTW...I sustained additional damage when the person who served me ran over my sons hockey goal. CLASSY. read more

I have used Ray's for about 15 years and have always had excellent service. Have had trees trimmed, fungicide applied to my Horse Chestnut and Tulip trees, etc. Dennis, their arborist, is great to work with, very knowledgeable and very helpful--really knows his stuff. The foreman and workers that come out do a great job of trimming and working with AmerEn if electric lines need to be dropped. Always clean up after themselves and you can tell that they really want to do a good job. Money well spent. read more

Bottom line.... Garage finished in August, contact issued and signed in December. January contact was voided the day before work was to start. $800 increase on new offer and they tell you that you mismanage your projects and that you are ridiculous. This is how they treat people. read more

We were out of town a couple of weeks ago when a storm came through (July 13th) and a small tree fell against our house. Our neighbor contacted Rays to come out and take a look at it and someone from the company came out THAT DAY, and cleaned up the tree for us. As previous customers of Rays, we've always had great experience with this company but this was definitely an "above and beyond" job well done. Thank you, thank you, thank you! We contracted Ray in the summer of 2011 to remove a large limb from our tree that had partially hit our house during a storm. At the time, we asked if they thought the rest of the tree was safe. They said we should have no problems. We continued to worry that the tree may be unstable so we called them this winter to look at the tree again. They said the tree was ok and said that if we were concerned we can put in cables to secure the branches. We had them come and cable the tree as well as remove some dead branches on our tree as well as some branches from the tree next to our house. When spring came we noticed that the branches that were cabled did not have any leaves on them. Our neighbor was also concerned that the branches might hit their garage. They were so concerned, in fact, that they had an arborist come and look at the tree. The arborist said the tree is dying and was a hazard and could do considerable damage if we have a bad storm. It was upsetting to hear this especially since we had ask Ray's Service if they thought the tree needed to be removed and we had paid a considerable amount to have the branches cabled and the tree trimmed ($1500). We contacted Ray's Service several times and each time, they said they would come out to look at the tree. In the meantime, we received two other estimates and each arborist said the tree should be removed. We finally got a response from Ray's and after several weeks, they came out and agreed that the tree should be removed. I ask them why they put cables in a dying tree and they said that they didn't realize it when they looked at the tree this winter. Other arborists indicated that by looking at the bark and branches they could tell that the tree was not healthy. I told Ray's that I wanted an estimate to remove the tree and I also wanted credit for the cabling job. Again, I had to call them at least three times to get back to me. When they finally emailed a quote, it was $1000 more than what the other tree services had quoted ( with a caveat that they may give us a discount of $450 for the cabling job - not definite). I am writing this because I do not want someone to have the issues that we had with this company. Bottom line, this company is has poor customer service, poor diagnostic skills and their quotes are excessively high. read more
