This place is goddamn unbelievable, it's like a dive bar for famous people who want to feel normal. Decidedly unpretentious, basically the same vibe you'd get from a college bar. I came because I knew it was co-owned by Nicholas Braun (Cousin Greg from Succession) but walked away with an appreciation for just how fun, laidback and utterly cool this place is as a hangout, just zero vanity whatsoever. Shared a table with two New Yorkers who were telling us all about the various times they'd be here and what (and who) they ran into. They told me the crowd size was "dead" compared to weekends, which I'll just have to see for myself since you'd be hard-pressed to find even the crowd we got here at a bar in Seattle. Was really excited about checking this place out and even though it's technically a fake dive bar, I do really enjoy the dive bar look and aesthetic they were going for. The prices however, are insane for a "dive bar" and shitty beers in a can and well liquor. While I'm on the topic of beer, they don't have anything on draft? In a dive bar? Not cool. Also the staff. God the staff are so rude and entitled. A celebrity owning a bar does not make the staff celebrities. I asked one guy with very long hair about the beer selection and he just pointed at the fridge and said: "there", even though I couldn't see them all from where I was standing, hence my question. I settled for a Tecate from the very basic selection and asked if he could add the hot sauce and seasoned lime. He had absolutely no idea what I was talking about. Like, you work in a bar! I like Rays but recently I was there and was physically by another patron. The bartender said I deserved it because I took a picture of a group of people posing and they did not like that. Sorry, There is no excuse or justification for hitting someone yet and the staff was ok with it. I didn't call the cops but could have. Bartending staff is rude and completely out of line. I was cursed out by a white male bartender for merely trying to get someone's attention (I was ignored for 20 minutes and other people who were waiting after me were being serviced - I only stuck my hand out as it was packed that night and I tend to blend into crowds because of my height). Given that the place was extremely busy, a simple acknowledgement as opposed to verbally assaulting customers would have sufficed. I should note that I was one of the few people of color in the establishment and it is unfortunate that I was disrespected in such a manner because I didn't happen to fit a certain 'look'. read more

I went here for a work-related PR event and I will never go back. I came from Brooklyn on one of the hottest days of the summer with two of my colleagues for the bouncer to automatically tell me, "sorry guys, there's a private event". When I told him my two colleagues and I were on the guest list, he looked down at my outfit and said, "sorry, no shorts". I told him that was nowhere listed on the invite and he told me it was a new rule, but I could sit outside if I wanted. Because I had to be there for work, I complied. Mind you, I wasn't dressed sloppily. I had on a pair of pastel-ish green shorts with a tan patterned polo. To be quite frank, I was easily one of the more visually LGBTQ+ folks there, so that's automatically where my mind went. When I sat, the general manager came up to my table wearing a hat, an open flannel, ripped black skinny jeans cut into shorts and dirty vans. Upon bringing up the issue wondering why my outfit wasn't okay and his was, he danced around the question by telling me he didn't want to bring a "certain demographic of people" into the bar. The "demographic" he explained was the fratty type of guy that made women feel uncomfortable, telling me, "you know what I mean, right?" Being a gay man with a self-proclaimed stellar sense of style and a sleeve full of tattoos, I clearly, to the eye, did not fit in this demographic he was talking about. After deciding to give one last shot and staying for one drink, I noticed the bouncer let in four different straight-looking men at four different times wearing shorts. I then finally let myself realize it wasn't my shorts, it was me. I paid my $50 tab (for three drinks at, like 6:30PM on a Wednesday, mind you) and left. I in no way blame the PR company who handled the event, solely the staff. If it were a shorts-related issue, then this bar should not consider themselves a dive bar. Additionally, to the GM, practice what you preach. If you don't want customers coming in wearing shorts on a 90 degree day, don't wear shorts yourself and don't let other patrons in that fit this strange "demographic" you've created for your elitist dive bar. Very disappointed by this entire situation and never have I felt more uncomfortable trying to get into a bar -- in front of my colleagues, no less. There are some serious issues this bar needs to work on regarding what kind of people are and are not allowed inside here. Feels funny to even type that in 2021. If you aren't going to let people in based on your pre-conceived ideas of what kind of person they might be, don't own a bar. Plain and simple. Look if you wanna be like every other place on the LES that is selective about who you let in, fine, but don't advertise yourself as a dive bar then. Rolled up with a couple of friends, bouncer said they were at capacity. A different group walked up literally less than a minute later, he let them right in. I said to the bouncer "I thought you were at capacity?" He said they were part of a party, even though he didn't ask them a single thing, so how could he know that? Then as we were standing there figuring out where to go instead, he asked how many of us were there. I said four, he said "ok, but your friend can't come in with a backpack". Being a well known local bartender on LI and starting out in a dive bar and working my a$$ off in that side of this industry I decided to drop in quick at Rays I can say it's more like and "implant dive bar" with "implant bartenders"! Golden rules that neighborhood dive bartenders live by, every patron is the same! No religion or politics at the bar (leave those topics at the door) also bars Rays is trying to be like don't follow rules we make our own rules! Pretty upsetting to see that during the pandemic they hosted "game nights" involving money and instead of giving the left over proceeds to idk maybe to help their fellow local bartenders who suffered the most during the pandemic and like other neighborhood joints have they decided to give to a multi million dollar POLITICAL group actblue! I try not to leave bad reviews but my friend group and I sat across from the bar at one of the tables and we saw TWO large bugs walk across the wooden booth separation (i.e next to our faces/hair). If I could leave 0 stars I would because I couldn't even get in. We got to the door and were told to wait 15 minutes. We thought that was reasonable and respectfully waited. Several people left and we continued to wait. We remained patient until a group of 10 or so white girls were let in in front of us. And then a second group. When we asked what was going on we were told we were losers and "good bye chad". I have never been turned away by a bouncer or so disrespected before at a bar. We obviously left and found a place we were welcome just down the road. I would have never thought it would be so hard to get into any bar at 9:00pm on 08/06 (a Saturday) but apparently my group of 6 wasn't good enough for this establishment. Will not be going back without $100 to slip the bouncer, because apparently that's what it takes. Money and the "right look". I am an engineer and would probably would have spent a lot of money that night with all of my highly paid friends. But spent my money else where. Probably for the best. first off, staff is unbelievably rude. literally every person i spoke to that was working there gave me an attitude. this is how you treat your customers who you are already asking to spend an exorbitant amount of money on a drink? ended up leaving pretty quickly as i realized how not worth it this bar was. as i was in a rush to leave, i left my tab / card open. went back the next day right as they opened to close out and get my card back. they lost my credit card.... and all the girl had to say that was working there was "sorry" and told me to check my bank account to see if anyone was using my card. she took my number "in case" they found it. WHERE DID IT GO? i have left my card at bars many times and there had never been an issue. absolutely insane..... had to cancel my card and you all know how unbelievably annoying it is to get a whole new credit card that is linked to all of your apps. very pissed. they don't care about their customers here at all. don't go. read more

Had a couple of beers here at 5:30pm on a Thursday night. My top 10 comments in no particular order: 10. The pool table felt is more like shag carpeting. 9. The bartender and manager? were out of dive bar central casting. Not a good thing. 8. The only other patrons in the place were tourists. Definitely not a good thing. 7. The jukebox was out of order. Really? 7B (horshoe bar) and the now defunct Manitoba's were made by their incredible jukeboxes. 6. The taped on wall decor looks like it came out of mail order "dive bar" kit. 5. The Dogs playing Pool painting/print. I just can't even... 4. The bartenders have almost more room behind the bars than customers. Really? Try and check out 529 Bar....nothing wrong with less room and more bar. 3. The bar looks brand new. Not one stain or cigarette burn. I guess since cigarettes are banned it would be e-cigarette burns...begs the question: if a the bar in a dive bar has no cig burns, is it really a dive? 2. My Miller Hi-Life cost 7 bucks. When I came here I was looking for a gas station and I have to be honest, it seemed like the staff didn't understand why cars need gas. Thankfully the bartender had some cans of fuel he, or she, had saved for a parade float that fortunately didn't fit in to the parade it was designed for. Long story short I ended up with enough gas to prove my step father wrong and then I stayed long enough to find out the bar itself is actually a haunted house with exactly 0 ghosts. Now for your run of the mill ghost hunter, yeah, that's a no star review. But personally I am SO SICK OF POLTERGEISTS! You find me a staff dedicated to making sure a clearly haunted dive bar has no actual spooking and I'll eat my hat. Trust me, I want to eat my hat, especially for a good cause. But as mad as I am about it I can't eat my hat, I have to wear it on my head, like a stupid jerk. Because, and my hat hates that I say this, this is the best bar in the city of New York. The best part is they have have both liquor and beer. Just when you think, "wow, they have liquor" sha ga boom, you're like, "and I'll try beer"... bottom line, this is a good place to meet a swimming coach but unfortunately they don't sell wigs. Don't ask for Pete or Mikey but if you meet an owner tell them you were bitten by both. Just make sure you wear a full necklace made of garlic and show up with a vegetarian crave case.
