Ray's Food Place isn't the idea small town grocery store you'd hope for. The clientele are mostly folks passing through in a rush (at least on a weekend), there are a lot of transients outside and the prices and selection of certain items leaves something to be desired. It should also be noted that in a town with very few public restrooms, Ray's is not stepping up to the plate. There were two restrooms in back, one of which is designated employees only (despite two non-employees sneaking in to use it while I waited) and the actual customer one, which includes a sign saying you have to have purchased something in store to even use it. There was someone inside so I waited in a line in a cramped back hallway for a good ten minutes wondering what in the world this person was doing inside before finally giving up and hitting a dirty gas station across the street. read more

What can I say about Ray's? They set their prices years ago before the local cannabis economy all but vanished. Now that the economy is wiped out rays still charges 4x other stores prices up near eureka. They are charging this community to death and desperately needs an internal audit. Even store brand foods and many times the price as up north. read more

This place deserves some updated reviews. I don't know what it was like in 2015, but as of August 2019 it's a pretty nice small town market. They have a wide range of products including a decent selection of organic and natural foods. I've been twice and both times the cashiers were friendly. And in any case it's a grocery store, not the concierge desk at the Ritz--some of the prince(sse)s on Yelp need to grow up and have realistic expectations of how people will treat customers. They also have a decent selection of sundries which was handy because my kid needed a pencil sharpener and there's no office supply in town. Yes there are sketchy people in the parking lot, but that's true everywhere in Garberville, it's not Ray's fault. As for pricing, it seemed fine to me, certainly no worse than SF Bay Area. read more

I needed some OTC meds I had forgotten and they had it. I also got some cool t-shirts with Humboldt imprinting on them for only $10 each. They have hoodies with the same imprints for $20. Just bought $9 chicken lo mein. Its not edible had to throw out taste overcooked and if it was mixed with old and new no flavor. Their prices are outrageous for how nasty their deli food is even their produce is a day away from having to toss. Sadly it's the only grocery in town with reasonable hours therefore the prices are off the chart. It's like a time machine into the 70's. The one star is only for the employees excellent customer service. I only go there when im desperate and have no other option. We made a pit stop in this town to get a bite to eat before heading to our campsite at Hidden Springs. I'm not sure what the deal was, but everything was closed except the strange taco shop, so ended up at the grocery store. They have a sandwich counter, which we were skeptical of at first, but ended up ordering from after seeing a positive Yelp review solely for the sandwiches at this store. We ordered two sandwiches. One was the Italian and the other was Buffalo Chicken. The Italian one was fairly average, but the Buffalo Chicken sandwich was amazing! You can custom create your sandwich using the order form too. There are less choices for bread, cheeses and condiments than Safeway supermarkets, but they still a decent selection. The sandwiches were $5 and came with a free bag of Deep River chips (a big bag too!). We also bought a few chocolate bars there, and we forgot, but we should have bought a fire wood bunch for $5. It was a big bundle! And it's $8 for a tiny bundle at the campsite. Oops. This place is really disorganized though. While looking for chocolate, we found about 5 or 6 different areas of the store with it, instead of just a candy aisle and maybe at the checkout. It would be nice if the products were consolidated into one section instead all over the store. The prices are a bit higher than a normal suburban grocery store, but you're up in the forest, so what can you expect. read more

Those who have shopped at one of these God-forsaken stores (it only takes one first time visit), are fully aware of the expensive ,ever-rising prices on their grocery items. We've all arrived tired, while on the road - to find run-of-the-mill service and selection at any grocery store we pull into...But not at the Ray's in Garberville. They had a sweet selection of Bear Republic and Eel River craft beers, among a bevy of others. The presentation was clean and the service was spot on. we stopped here 3 times while we were visiting the Redwoods in the area. We got ice, breakfast pastries, & deli sandwiches. They let you call your deli sandwich order in by phone ahead of time which is great ! The cashiers & deli people are super nice Negatives: 1) there were always homeless or pan handlers in the parking lot. & some stoned people just hanging out. This is the sister market to Shop Smart in Redway, part of an Oregon based chain (I'm told). Prices in the Garberville market are consistently higher than those for the same items in Redway, but there are some things carried here that the sister store does not stock. Staff is very pleasant and very helpful, and has gone out of their way to make certain some of my family's more esoteric needs are stocked. They carry a small assortment of organic produce and are hospitable to local fundraising groups (you can always buy your Girl Scout Cookies at a table right outside in season, for instance). Nice people. Not quite so down home as Redway, but helpful. Be prepared to wait a long, long time in line should you shop during the peak times of day. Strike up a fascinating conversation with the person in front of you. You'll be fine. read more

Holy inbreds. I went in to get some groceries and needed meats. The deli was closed due to "lack of help". Then I turn around and they're locking the doors. At 530 pm... They close at 10. We ask some toothless girl if there are prepackaged meats and she says no. Walk down along the back row and whattaya know? Prepackaged meats!
