I found Ray's on yelp, I loved that he was so close to my house! I was having shoulder surgery a couple of weeks ago, knowing I would be home recouping for a while I bought a bunch of warm comfy thermals and PJ pants for around the house. I have really small wrists so often when I buy things with cuffs they are way too big, I brought Ray 4 thermal shirts a very nice new sweater and a fleece, he fixed all of them for me overnight so I would have them ready to go to keep me comfortable and warm after my surgery! Ray's work was flawless and he was very friendly and helpful! The price was a little more than I had planned on but for 6 pieces done overnight it was well worth it!! I usually do not review unless it is an exceptionally good or bad experience but definitely have to do it for Ray. I have been going to Ray's shop with all of my suits/shirts (probably 5 in total) for the last two years now and Ray deserves every one of these stars. Most importantly, Ray is a pleasure to interact with. He not only will listen to exactly what you are looking for with each piece but also will chat with you as much or little as you want throughout fitting and pickup. Quality: Excellent. Ray listens to what you need and delivers. He takes pride in his work and it shows. Never have had an issue and have even let out the same pants I brought in previously (darn body!). Ray had left enough material to let them back out. Speed: All my clothes have been on time for the pickup we set (some i even requested to have ready in 2 days when in a jam for a wedding). Super experience. Ray replaced a hem on a dress that required special stitching so it didn't go through to the front side of the dress. The original stitching fell out after one wash, which was disappointing given it's a $250 dress. He did a wonderful job. Also a really sweet guy. I'll be back, I'm sure! Ray did a FANTASTIC job reshaping the vintage 1950s wool suit that I brought to him. The he totally rebuilt and tapered both the jacket and the pants to fit me. It looks like a million bucks, now. All done in under a week. Amazing. I have a backlog of clothes that I rarely wear because they don't fit quite right that I am going to bring to him now. At first glance, his hours seem odd...but they're actually perfect for anyone who has to work during the day. Ray is one of the best tailors in San Francisco. He's been my tailor for well over a decade and although his shop is somewhat inconvenient for me to visit, his attention to detail and craftsmanship is well worth it. I worked in the fashion apparel industry for 20 years and I am very particular about how my clothes fit. Ray understands this about me and always takes the time to get things just right. He's altered suits for me - virtually taking them apart for me at times to reconstruct them - made shirts for me, added customized details to ready-to-wear pieces, re-fit slacks and pants, etc. Ray is not the alternations person at your neighborhood cleaners. He's a top notch tailor. He's a pro. Hands down. Period. He used to work at the top (and much more expensive) downtown SF tailor shops and I have used many of them, but they don't have anything on Ray. Some of them don't even take your input into consideration - a bad sign when it comes to working with a tailor. End of day, a tailor should work with you vs just doing what you say or telling you what to do. Sometimes I wish he would open a shop downtown to make things a bit more convenient for me and also show those other guys how tailoring is done right, but until that happens, I'll keep driving out to his shop whenever I need expert tailoring. read more

Wow! Ray is the coolest. I bought a pretty cheap suit at H&M that didn't nearly fit - but it was cheap. For just about $50 Ray made the suit fit like it was made for my body. Seriously impressive. Fast, friendly, affordable, and seriously good work. He took the time to make sure I was comfortable with all of the measurements he was laying out, and gave me a time to come pick it up, and that was that! I went in to see Ray to have my rain/overcoat taken in. First thing - as soon as I entered (he was helping someone else), he said Hi, I'll be right with you (nice, right?). Once he was available, we discussed what I wanted. He told me what could and could not be done to make the coat fit better, and pointed out a drawstring that I hadn't noticed. Once he helped me adjust that, he told me I didn't need to do anything else! Ray knows his stuff. He is a suit man through and through. I brought my new j crew suit for alterations and the moment I put it on he sized me up and called out where the faults were: 'bubbling' on the upper back, taper on the sides, and taper on the pants up to the knee, no hemming. Took a week and presto, the suit was tailored: perfectly slim without the discomforts that would usually follow. All three points of tailor ran to 135 (and you should not paying any less) for a suit that I wear without that weird feeling of 'something's off....' you get from any slim fit OTR suit. My first review on Yelp, but I owe Ray at least that. I was looking for a tailor in the neighborhood and found Ray's shop rated really well at "5 stars". I recently purchased a new suit, sport coat, jeans and pants and decided they were worth tailoring. I gave Ray a call and brought them in. It's a small shop, and by the looks he has lots of customers (don't be surprised if he's seeing one or a couple drop by during your visit). Parking can be a challenge. I wouldn't advise toting along the little ones, you may have to cross busy Mission. Ray's a funny and friendly guy. He enjoys sharing his life's experiences and he has some interesting ones. Like others mentioned, he doesn't try to influence you into making certain alterations. However, he does very well in listening to what you want and will provide solicited feedback. I was impressed with my first visit and extremely proud to flaunt his work. I've had several alterations done and am stoked to now say I have a personal tailor. He does make you look like a million $. Ray is extremely busy, but if you're willing to wait for work to be done, it's definitely worth it. He is a true master of his craft. After searching Yelp for a decent tailor to get a suit fitted. Ray's was the first one that popped up. After reading all the reviews, I had to check out his shop. Ray literally has to be one of the nicest guys there is! So friendly and incredibly helpful with 20+ years of experience! He tailored my suit well beyond what I was expecting, made my H&M suit look like a high dollar suit. Definitely couldn't beat the price and the turn around. Ray is the best! He really knows what he is doing. I'm so glad that I found his review on yelp. . The back story: My son has a pair of formal black pants that were a little too tight in the waist, but were the only pants that he wanted to wear to his high school prom (instead of renting a tuxedo). So he took them to the local dry cleaning lady who does alterations. She told him there was no way to alter the pants, that they would be ruined if he cut slits in the sides at the waist, the pants wouldn't hang right, etc. My son, being very stubborn and not taking no for an answer, went home and cut the waist band on both side (without taking out the seams) and asked if I would sew in pieces of material taken from the bottom of the hem in the legs. Not knowing much about sewing I did a search on yelp and found Ray. We took the raggedly cut pants in to Ray, and received back THE SAME DAY a beautifully repaired pair of pants. The work was so well done that the pants look like they little wedges of material that were added were part of the original design. They fit my son perfectly. (And he looked so handsome on prom night.) From now on, all our alteration and sewing repairs will be taken to Ray. He tends to work late, so if the store isn't open in the morning, call him. Ray definitely knows what he's doing. I had a week and a half before a Wedding and he made adjustments that The Men's Warehouse wouldn't have done well as him. And I bought the suit from them. My suit didn't fit as well as I wanted and Ray took care of all the problems that I had a concern about. The waist of my slacks fit well but it was a bit too wide for me at the legs. I told him I wanted more of a slim fit. He took my input and he fixed it perfectly to my request. As for the jacket, I was originally measured at 40reg. He told me I should've been fitted into a 38reg. But he was able to make the adjustments to make it fit correctly. I told him I wanted more of a slim cut on the sides and fixed that perfect. He suggested he fix the shoulder area too because it was bunching up due to wrong suit size I was measured. My suit had a pattern as well which made the difficulty rate of correcting it very hard. Unless you're a top notch tailor like Ray. He match up the patterns perfectly like it was stitched that way. Originally I just brought my suit to your regular dry cleaner/alteration shop. They wouldn't attempt to do any of the adjustments that Ray did! I definitely would recommend Ray. He definitely knows what he's doing and has the experience. He works at Bloomingdale's as well as owning his own shop. He definitely brings his work to home because he lives right behind the shop. In summary, Ray made me from looking like a slouch in a oversized suit. To more of a million dollar look with a slim modern fit tailored suit. I went to Ray after reading the Yelp reviews. 1st as i waited a young man in his 20's from Turkey (Interning for software or internet co. in SF) had 2 shirts he wanted taken in. The back and forth of the work and the cost for the work went on for 20 minutes, and my wait had extended to 30 minutes.. The customer spoke good english but it was clearly his second language. Frustrated and out of time I interrupted and asked the gentleman about his shirts that were requiring $50- each for alterations. One was from Turkey, the other from Ross. The Ross shirt was an inexpensive shirt and not worthy of $50 worth of alterations (except of course if there was another reason for the investment) He assured me that it was just a shirt. I told him about slim fit shirt and Loemans who often carries Theory slim fit shirts. He thanked me, dissed the alterations on the Ross and had the other done. What bothers me is this young man was clearly tight on fund and not yet educated about clothing options. Ray knew the shirt was of low quality, and maybe it could be argued that "he was just doing his job" Finally my turn. By this time i needed to have left 10 minutes ago, so I tried to make my time w Ray brief and efficient. He marked 2 pair of pants for hemming and the sleeves of a leather jacket. I also brought lightwiethg unlined brown blazer and some beautiful silk to use to line the back only.. I asked Ray what it would cost do this lining and hem the sleeves. He marked the sleeves and complimented the pattern of the silk and quoted $50.00 for the work. I did not need the lightweight jacket in a hurry, as i did the pants, and told Ray so. My son picked up the alterations today. Ray had said the lining was done as well as the alterations. What i received was lining installed in the st 8 inches, from the collar down in the back. The remaining 1/2 to 2/3rd of the back remained unlined, even though there was adequate fabric, and cutting and tacking the bottom 16 inches would have been little additional work once the top was worked out. The sleeves with their chalk marks were not hemmed. I called Ray and asked for an explanation. He said it would have cost more than $50 to do the work. I do not believe that Ray cannot bid this work correctly, he is a seasoned tailor. There is no recourse for this,except this review, and I do suggest that other patrons beware. i was too trusting due to the yelp reviews as was the Turkish gentleman, I received a product that will need to be redone and hemmed, the Turkish gentleman did not have his Ross shirt altered for a price higher than the original cost.
