Miriam altered a bias cut dress that was not of the best craftsmanship (from Zara) for a wedding and made it look like a million bucks. She took great care to get everything just right and even redid the zipper which was pulling on the fabric and also evened out the sleeves. She did a lot of hand sewing there. She even offered to trim the tulle of my daughter's wedding dress in an emergency fix (the tailoring that had been done in NY was poorly done and the tulle underskirt was not trimmed correctly and showed awkwardly from under the skirt). read more

I've been going to Miriam's home business for many years. She can do some complicated tailoring but she will be honest in telling you something can't be done or won't turn out well. Cable Car Tailors is the first time I had ever gotten anything tailored and I had such a positive experience. Mariam is super sweet, and I felt so welcomed in her home. Although the pricing is a bit steep, the skilled-work of Mariam is phenomenal. I went in not knowing anything or what I needed. I just needed to not step on my dress and have the straps stay in place. I told her what would make me comfortable and she provided suggestions according to how the dress looked on me and the height of my heels. After I left, she provided me a copy of the pricing and the date and time of pickup. My dress was three-layers and she did such a great job with the adjustments. My dress looked as if it had never been worked on and it fitted so well. Mariam even returned all the extra materials that got cut off so that I could use it for my own crafts. This review is long overdue and Miriam deserves all of the praise and 11/10 stars. She's helped my husband and me with both our elopement and big wedding outfits. I did not have any "traditional" dresses in that both elopement and wedding dresses were delicate, intricate, and had multiple layers/piece/elements needing to be taken into consideration while tailoring. It was easy to tear both materials and not look right if the tailoring wasn't done correctly due to the delicate floral patterns. Elopement jumpsuit: I ordered my outfit from Paris and was really nervous about getting it tailored because it was pretty expensive with the shipping added on. With the elopement date coming up, I couldn't risk messing up on the tailoring as I couldn't go back to a physical store and easily replace this jumpsuit and start over. It had a very delicate floral appliqué pattern and train and Miriam made it fit me like a glove and knew exactly how to work with both the pants portion and train. Wedding dress: I went for a similar floral appliqué pattern sheer look and there were multiple parts to this dress. I had an attachment that came on and off and I'm so grateful I took it in for Miriam to see because the original construction and design were not done correctly. She took one look and knew exactly what to update and fix. I felt rest-assured that the garment would actually fit right for my wedding day. Husband: The wedding tux was an Armani suit and I skipped using the Nordstrom tailoring offered where we bought it. I was nervous because I thought going with Nordstrom would at least guarantee some sort of insurance if things went sideways since we bought it there. I'm so glad we decided to go with Miriam instead. She factors in both practicality and style, making sure the suit not only fit and flattered my husband but was also functional and workable while wearing, sitting, and dancing. Miriam is the only person I trust to take in any of our most special numbers. We also take in any other more causal pieces like dress shirts for work and more because although it would cost less to go and get our more causal stuff done elsewhere, we can trust Miriam to do it right and not deal with needing to fix a bad job. We also trust Miriam to have the highest integrity and redo things when we're not 100% happy (which has not really happened -- the only time it happened is because my weight was fluctuating a lot right before my elopement), deliver things on time, and also trust her to be honest with us if she thinks we don't actually need to pay for tailoring. Miriam is detail oriented and precise and extremely skilled in her craft. She's also a wonderful person and I enjoy every trip to spend time and chat with her about life. I'm hesitant to even leave this review because she's become our trusty go-to tailor and she's already so booked up and busy, but she deserves all of the business and success. Miriam did a superb job and I'm an extremely satisfied with her work. This was my first time getting anything tailored. I had gotten an off the rack suit from Macy's that didn't fit quite right, including the shirt. The sleeves were too long and wide and so were the pants. While she was measuring me, Miriam explained what she would do to the suit and made some recommendations on what should be done; but ultimately left the choice up to me while not making me feel pressured to get someone I wasn't comfortable or happy with. I've brought vintage Helmut Lang pants here that were literally falling apart to have them restored; the piece in question was released back in 2001, and ridiculously expensive, so going to the local dry cleaner's was not a viable option for me. Endyma, which is a vendor based in Europe that specializes in archival restorations for Helmut Lang, had a 2 month turnaround time, so I bookmarked that as my last resort. Due to the high moisture content in my closet at the time, the vintage cotton was practically rotting and falling apart when exposed to high stress and tension at areas like the pop rivet button closures and the straps that were secured behind the thigh with stainless steel buckles. Miriam was honest and forthright about what she could not restore, and the process through which she could repair the piece. After about 2 weeks, the pants were brought back to life. If you have expensive pieces in your closet that need some extensive restorative work done, I recommend stopping by Miriam's to at least have her take a look. I've brought some other items here too from Dries Van Noten and Rick Owens for more simpler alterations and repairs; her attention to detail and skill is noticeable and appreciated. Be aware that this is a cash only business, so be prepared to visit an ATM when your alterations or repairs have been completed. I've noticed that she likes to have her birds flying around her apartment as well, but she seems to store all of her client's items in an isolated room, so I wouldn't be too concerned. read more

Miriam is such a pro and a delight to work with. She is a great collaborator and obviously master of her craft. You can trust her handiwork as well as counsel, she was great at coaxing out a vision that met my requests and exceeded my expectations. I brought in two items: a fun but ill-fitting and kind of shoddily made dress from a sample sale (weirdly cut cowl neck with way too much gaping) and a pair of vintage suit trousers that were way too small. She was able to alter the dress simply in a way that made it fit perfectly, and even spotted a few small details to fix & reinforce which made it look so much more finished and high quality. I had no idea if the pants were even possible to save since I couldn't even zip them up, but she took careful measure to alter them in a clever way and made sure I approved of the adjustments. Now they fit perfectly...way more flattering than I thought possible. I thought I'd just have to hide the top with the matching jacket but I can definitely wear these on their own as well - the updates are integrated seamlessly. I recently was in a pickle with a bridesmaid dress that needed alterations done in a week - and Miriam at Cable Car Tailors came through huge for me!! I called her and was able to bring the dress in the same day, got a quote, and she had it done in a couple days. And WOW did she do an excellent job! I needed the waist brought in which required moving the buttons and removing the zipper and putting it back on, in addition to several inches taken off the length. Very satisfied with the tailored wedding dress service I received here with Miriam. During SIP, my original dress seamstress was closed, and it was questionable when she'd reopen for appointments. It was stressful as my wedding is coming up in July...and I needed to get the job done quickly. I called a few places, and I'm glad I came across Cable Car Tailors. Miriam was more than happy to take me by appointment to alter my dress. She also finished it very quickly, within 3 weeks (length shortened, shoulders shortened, removal of train), absolutely no problem - honestly, I think she could have finished it even sooner if I needed it done!!! My dress looks fantastic. Not posting pics till after my wedding for obvious reasons. I would happily recommend her to all family and friends who need an alteration. FYI on another note, she said she can tailor practically anything, even leather! Wow. Pretty neat. WARNING: AVOID THIS BUSINESS! Read owner responses to 1-star reviews. I was sucked in by the 5-star ranking, but do not be fooled. This is an amateur's business run by a very rude and hostile person. The shop is actually her apartment, so you should NEVER GO ALONE. Be aware there are at least 4 birds flying around and leaving droppings wherever, on the carpet, the clothes being altered, even on the woman herself. Watch where you step because she will make you take your shoes off outside the apartment. As to the work itself, it's very rushed. She wants you in and out as fast as possible and she will try to bring you the clothes when you come to pick them up so you don't have a chance to try them on and check the work. The thread used for my pants hem was a very noticeable different color, and the cuff was a completely different style after she worked on them because it was easier for her to do. When I pointed out the issues she immediately got aggressive and demanded more money to correct the obvious mistakes. I took my clothes and went somewhere else, it is not worth the hassle of dealing with this person. Scroll down to read her responses to the other 1-star reviews to get an honest sense of this person. This review is long overdue. Miriam tailored my very intricately embroidered wedding dress, which meant taking off the embroidery by hand and putting it back on by hand. I almost cried when she explained to me how challenging it would be to do. I initially felt like it would be impossible but Miriam constantly reassured me that she can do it, with the help of her daughter. And they sure did! This is a long review, please also see photos. Beware, not because she made a mistake on these drapes, but because she refused to take responsibility for the error, did not accept to refund me, and insulted me in addition. Based off of her response, I've decided to leave this review. I'm sure she will respond to this review with the unprofessional and rude response I've seen both in her response to me, as well as other yelp complaints. My note to the reader of this, is to think carefully on how you want someone to handle a mistake they made on an item of yours. I am now out not only the substantial money I paid her (in cash only - IRS evasion maybe - I'll submit a complaint there too), but also out the thousands of dollars I spent on the drapes themselves. I had just purchased drapery panels for my living room that were slightly too long. Based on the reviews, I thought this would be an easy and quick job. There were 2 sets of curtains, one needed to be hemmed by just a quick turn of the hem. The other set I gave a specific measurement for - 107 and 3/4. Pretty simple. Let me note that these curtains were just purchased, brand new, out of package. I hung them up, realized they were too long, and then took them down to take to Miriam. Here is what came back: the curtains that were supposed to be just one hem length shortened, were shortened as requested. However, for some reason, the width was also shortened. In changing the width, the drapery hook was folded into the curtain backwards. When I hung the curtains up out of the box, they all fit onto my drapery hooks. When I hung them up after Miriam, they were one short. Aside from this, there were stains all over the front and underside of the curtain. I called Miriam immediately the same day, she claimed to not know what I was talking about. Blamed me for the stains and suggested I should have them dry cleaned. She asked that I send her pictures of the drapery and also bring them back to her. I sent her pictures, she again claimed she did not do anything to the width. How is that possible? I took curtains to her that hung properly, and I brought them back to be one short. One only of us has a sewing machine, and it's not me. This morning I decided to hang the second set. Also, covered with brown and yellow stains on the lining. Miriam's own writing on the curtains shows the length should be shortened to: 107 3/4. The picture with the measuring tape clearly shows 105". Again, I texted Miriam the photos. Again, I was responded to in an unprofessional manner, accusing me of being dishonest and that she didn't do anything wrong. She did offer that I bring these in for her to inspect. I will gladly do that, if she refunds the money I paid her. Otherwise, it's just a waste of time to talk to someone who is not going to accept responsibility. Pictures attached. Updated - as expected, her response is illogical and untruthful. A ruler is a ruler. A fact is a fact. I am actually stunned that someone who pretends to offer a service could so blatantly be comfortable with ruining someone else's property. Shame on you, Mariam. read more
