He's one of the best radiologists I've ever worked with. He's professional, compassionate and caring. He has high standards. Which is what makes him someone you want as your doctor. He doesn't rush. He takes the time to talk and answer your questions. He's very intelligent and knowledgable. When my friends and family ask about breast care... I always recommend Dr. Chawla

I met Dr. Chawla when I went in to the Tarzana Women's Center to get a biopsy after an abnormal…read moremammogram. Dr. Chawla sat down with me before the procedure, showed me the films, explained what he was going to do step by step and made sure any of my questions were answered. Throughout the procedure (where you have to lie still for quite a bit of time and they are sticking a needle into your breast, for Chrissakes), he made sure to check in with me repeatedly to let me know what he was doing, what he'd be doing next, how it would feel and to check that I was comfortable. Afterward, I told him I had a lot more questions but that I would wait until he called with my diagnosis to ask them. He said he would be happy to answer my questions now. I met him in his office after the procedure and we sat and talked for about a half an hour. He never made me feel like he needed to be somewhere else. He also didn't try to sugar coat anything for me. He was compassionate and yet also clear that what he saw on my films was worrisome to him. He showed me the different views, magnified them, showed me the views of the samples he took and explained everything to me for as long as it took and until I ran out of questions for him. I mean, they weren't just radiology questions. They started to get into questions about pathology, about the causes of breast cancer, why me, and so forth. He never made me feel like my questions were dumb or that I was wasting his time. He acted the way someone in his position - at the front line, someone who tells women for the very first time that they have breast cancer - should act: with compassion, clarity and respect. I have no family history of breast cancer and had never in a million years thought I would be having this conversation with a doctor, but thank goodness it was Dr. Chawla because he made it as easy as possible to hear what I was hearing, that I very likely had breast cancer. He assured me he'd call me the next day with my diagnosis. He did and, sure enough, the sample came back positive. He talked to me about my options and recommended I meet with a breast surgeon and get an MRI. While my OBGYN did not really help at all even though I was just diagnosed with BREAST CANCER, Dr. Chawla insisted I could call or email him any time with questions. I usually don't take doctors up on these things, but I am usually not diagnosed with breast cancer so I did. I emailed him about how to collect my path and imaging records so that I could meet with surgeons. I emailed him to ask about the politics of why nobody would order me an MRI. I emailed him to get recommendations for breast surgeons. I emailed to ask about my pathology report and could he please interpret it for me. Each time I wrote him, he answered quickly and took the time to answer thoughtfully. He gave me invaluable (doctor, not internet) information. He's even agreed to write a note for my mom so she can cancel her vacation to help me recover after my cancer surgery. He seems genuinely interested in my updating him on my condition, my status and my choice of a surgical team. I have never in my life met a doctor who is so accessible, informative and compassionate when, frankly, once he's done reading my mammogram, taking the biopsy and giving me my diagnosis, his job is done. The way he's treated me and continues to, long after I've left his care, has shown that he does not consider his work done just because a patient has left his office and, in my mind, this is how every doctor should think. Most importantly, in all of my ramblings about his patient-centered approach to medical care, I've neglected to mention that Dr. Chawla is a really competent radiologist - fellowship trained - and he saves lives for a living, mine included.

I had to have surgery on my wrist after several attempts with the injections. Again he assured me that it would be painless...the surgery was 3 hours late so I was feeling stressed but realized he only comes into this hospital to do surgeries so if they are late he has absolutely "no control" over that. I was treated exceptionally well from the moment I stepped foot into the hospital, great staff and my surgery was 100% successful!!! I had absolutely no pain except tight stitches as it healed. Dr. Balfour may not have the best bedside manner but he is a top notch surgeon, which is by far more important in the long run!!! Thank you Dr. Balfour for your amazing skills as a surgeon and to his kind, sweet staff in the Burbank office!!! :-)))

I am baffled to see these bad reviews for Dr. Biderman. I have never felt in such good hands. My…read morePCP referred me to Biderman due to a suspicious mass in my breast and he was a god send. I didn't have a biopsy scheduled until weeks later at the imaging facility where I had the ultrasound of the mass. I expressed how anxious I was about this to Biderman (I'm 30 years old and otherwise very healthy so this was terrifying to me) and he took time out of his day during his lunch hour to do my biopsy that same day!! 2 days later I go in for a follow up (biopsy was done perfectly and healed perfectly with no pain) and he told me it was cancer. Of course I was devastated. Surgeons tend to be very matter of fact and more practical than empathetic, but Dr. Biderman was both. He was informative but I felt like he truly cared and wanted to make sure I was going to be ok emotionally too. He didn't rush out of the room, he literally sat there patiently comforting me as I cried and answered all my questions and told me in detail next steps. Sometimes we just want to hear what we want to hear but doctors can't give us false hope or talk in hypotheticals and I'm learning to just understand that. Biderman told his assistant to squeeze me in the following week for surgery even though he was booked because he knew how anxious I was. When I went for surgery, I did expect it to be running late because he had to fit me in, but it didn't run much later than the scheduled time at all. He came in and talked to me and my family beforehand, hence probably being super busy he doesn't make you feel rushed. He is patient and waits until all your questions are answered. He has spoken to me, my mom and my boyfriend multiple times on the phone just to answer questions and put our minds at ease. My tumor has been removed and my breast still looks the same! I was afraid of deformity and expressed that to him and I know he actually took into consideration my fear of that and did a really nice clean job. I obviously have scarring but he did it really well. I know I'll heal quickly and I'm honestly hardly in any pain. Even not on a lot of pain meds. It feels like a miracle. Lastly, he was so cognizant of my financial situation and how much everything would cost and made it a priority to make sure I was taken care of and aware of the situation without any surprisingly huge bills. He actually cared about my future anxiety about being in debt. How many docs really take the time to think about that for their patients? I can't say enough good things about him. If I ever need surgery again, I know who I'm going to! Also-- his employee, Griselda is AWESOME. I basically harassed her for days about different administrative things after this diagnosis and she never got frustrated once. She made everything move smoother for me and always got back to me in timely fashion when she said she would about literally anything at all. I never had to bug her to get a call back. P.S. a reviewer below seemed pretty upset about the dog in the office. That person must not like dogs? I mean for me, seeing that dog back there during such a scary time for me felt like a good omen and put me at ease. The dog is super cute and chill. It's not doing anything to disrupt the practice. Just adding extra cuteness. It just lies in the back behind the front desk. That's not unprofessional to me. If it were in the operating room, sure. But not a big deal to have a cute dog in a surgeons office. Pets are therapy for a lot of people!!

He was pleasant…read moreand I did not have to wait a long time in his office On his Intake form, I requested hernia SURGERY, specifically telling this surgeon on that form and in person on two subsequent occasions that I DID NOT want a PATCH. On the day of surgery, I was introduced to the anesthesiologist who indicated he was going to use fenatyl (Of course we had the Post-surgical trauma of St Joseph's ER MD manually digging out the fecal impaction because constipation is clinically associated with this anesthesia) -- That was fun. After I had received the 'pre surgery calming pill,' On December 22, 2016, Dr Biderman suddenly appeared in surgical sweats with a sheet of paper. He told me after reviewing his notes, he opined that the PATCH would be better and wanted to use it instead. He instructed me to sign the paper he had preprepared. Ever since this surgery with this PATCH, I have been in mild to moderate pain...and sometimes, like today, in real severe pain (at least a 7). IMHO Opinion, Dr Biderman knew exactly what he was doing by foisting this substitution of a PATCH for the more time-intensive regular hernia surgery that I requested on all visits and to which he had agreed to perform. He may be a great surgeon, certainly I have no complaints about the scar or its healing, but I am in real PAIN. By the way... do not plan to have sex after the PATCH surgery because the pain associated with the PATCH's movement under the skin will quickly ameliorate any romantic inclinations you may have.... ....Maybe certain spouses will find this to be a plus.....!
