I've visited this store plenty of times elsewhere in other cities and I've enjoyed my experience. It's a smaller store compared to other locations but this store has such a great sense of humor when it comes to it's Iowa City and other Midwest humor merchandise. Staff here was very friendly. The quintessential place to stop for Iowa City/Iowa swag. To me, Raygun can do no wrong. I found the Iowa City location to be well-stocked. Employees were friendly. Reasonable prices -- like those less than $2 cork coasters -- I have many. The Iowa City Colony doesn't quite live up to that billing, as it's smaller and doesn't quite have the East Village selection and energy. However, visiting this Raygun is well worth the trip, which I made a couple times while I was in Iowa City recently. There were a few new cool t-shirt designs that I hadn't seen before, this time I passed on buying one. There are 2 reasons for that: 1. My drawer at home is beyond full and Gayle is not happy about that. 2. It has to be a special design to beat my favorite one at home: I'm From Iowa - I Only Work in Outer Space" - Captain Kirk. I think my love for RAYGUN is basically because... they talk good. Like, REAL good. Everything they say is pure gold. I wish I were that funny! Walking through their store is the best. Magnets. Art. Stickers. Shirts. Koozies. Pens. Pencils. Post Cards. Glasses. Mugs. Stuff for kiddos, men and women. Games and other trinkets. It's a great store to peruse when you have time to kill, need a laugh or don't know what to get your uber liberal best friend or your midwest living family member. This particular location is cozy, not boasting many square feet of space. But even with the lack of room, this place never seems cluttered or disorganized. The staff is attentive. Pricing seems on point. I LOVE when I see their sale racks outside, there are ALWAYS great deals! Their University of Iowa specific items are always pretty awesome... New Kirk? Because Fran Said So?! Get them when you see them. They are gems and they are limited release more times than not. This location is prime. But parking could be tricky, but I mean-- that is most of downtown Iowa City. What a hoot to visit! This is a must-see shopping extravaganza. Raygun is not your typical chotchskis shop with tourist knick-knacks. Crossing the aisle maybe the theme for certain parts of this store, but they certainly pander to the left and it is creatively funny. If you have that very special someone whom you can not figure out what to get, this is the store to be. This location doesn't quite have the East Village pazazz, but it certainly is fun. read more

Sometime in the 90s Urban Outfitters and the shirt section in Zumiez got together while on a trip to the great state of Iowa - Raygun was born and now continues to expand into the far reaches of the delightful corn filled state! This location, as mentioned, is smaller than others but gets the job done relatively well! In downtown IC, it's a super easy place to walk to and grab anything Iowa novelty that your heart dreams of! Upon entering, the shirt racks are on your left- ranging from hilarious, to staunchly political, the deepest red and blue state dwellers will each find something they like! Today's find: " The Midwest - Friendly Folks and salads made with marshmallows." It's like they're peering into my soul! We grab a shirt or magnet just about every time we stop in, and for this, we salute you with five stars Raygun! They've graduated from a store that we think about stopping at, to one we now seek out! Plenty of oftener stuff that's hilarious graces the walls as well. Magnets, shot glasses, biking gear, sweatshirts and plenty of other trinkets to make your day brighter. Totally worth the premium on the products as they're well made and will bring a smile to the soul of the deepest Scrooge (as long as they're from Iowa!). A tiny taste of Raygun right in downtown Iowa City. The NewBo space is our preferred location, but we love all Raygun near and far. Great location, albeit a little cozy. They manage to squeeze in a little bit of everything Raygun has to offer though. Clothing, glassware, art work, magnets, and more! My favorites include the Midwest collection and some of the cheeky political stuff. Of course I also love that they support various local and national organizations. Dropped into this particular location during the $1 tshirt sale and went home with one of the designs I'd been eyeing for a while. I have to restrain myself to keep from buying one of everything, but they're also great for stocking up on gifts for any occasion. Really funny designs, mostly modern typography driven and themed around both Iowa and the Midwest. I love their shirts, as they're printed on a soft jersey by American Apparel. Plus, Raygun has so much more than just t-shirts! This is a great stop when looking for local flavor gifts. Their laugh out loud designs have also been made into magnets, window clings, coffee mugs, keychains, cork coasters, and loads more. I was sad to discover that some of these ancillary items are poorly printed or using extremely cheap materials, though. The magnets were extremely pixilated and several of the stickers look like they were smudged or bumped during the printing process. There definitely needs to be a higher level of quality control. So long as you look your purchase over closely to make sure it printed well, this is a great place to add some local flavor to your home or to your non-Iowan friends' lives. I was really excited about this place. Really really. I looked at a bunch of the shirts online and planned a major spree, but my actual visit fell flat. I honestly don't know where they found these employees. They literally could not have made me want to leave faster. From when I walked in and excitedly said "hi!" I was never acknowledged. That is, unless you count the complete stink eye I got every time I touched a shirt to finish reading it. Hi, you work at a t-shirt store. You will have to re-fold some of the shirts sometimes. If you don't want to do that, don't fold them so half the text is cut off. Also, get over yourself. It's not like you're busy doing something else. I considered just walking out but really wanted a shirt or two. I picked up one for M and one for myself and noticed that the heathering in my shirt had an odd spot. I asked the girl if they had another in my size and she lectured me about how it was part of the natural heathering process and not a stain. I never claimed it was a stain, I just wanted one that was one semi-consistent color. She said it was the last one so I passed, and I wish I could have taken a video of her epic eyeroll. I'm amazed they managed to stay in their sockets. I walked out feeling horrible-- really not an experience you want at a gag t-shirt store. I'm giving them 2 stars because the shirts are really quite funny-- if you can order them online or go to the Des Moines store. read more

I had viewed their clever t-shirts regularly online and was glad to have the chance to browse their whole collection in person on a more regular basis. In addition to their t-shirts, they also carry watches, jewelry, accessories, and other irony-laden goods. It's a great place to find a gift for someone that is hard to buy for. Finally, I'm a fan because they will take customer ideas and turn them into shirts. They did this for me - If you ever see their A.C. Slater shirt, that was my idea - but they took it to the next level, and I was thrilled. Definitely a cool place to check out downtown.
