Rayes is one of the few remaining mixed businesses, or 'corner shops', in Concord. And the fact that it's actually on a corner makes it all the more charming.
An old-fashioned Slushy machine adorns the entrance, and dozens of Zip Lock bags, filled with milk bottles, sour worms, lips, ears and peppermint leaves line the counter.
Pop Rocks and the individually wrapped watermelon bubblegum (that looses its flavour after 12 seconds) are two of my favourites. Rayes also stocks an impressive range of rare Wonka candy. But you might want to check the use-by dates. Or better yet, determine the confectionary's age by the amount of dust resting on the packaging.
On a recent visit to Rayes, I picked up a packet of Sour Skittles that had obviously melted and fused together. It was just one big, bulging skittle.
Despite the questionable freshness of much of Rayes products, I will continue to support this local 'corner shop' for as long as the Slushy machine stands. read more
