Stopped in to "top off" our Opal cards! Cashier was efficient and friendly and we were in and out quickly! Seemed a bit congested though as we did not want to hold up any customers behind us as it is a small store. read more

They sell a lot of stuff that is typically not found around here, but is commonplace in India. Marie biscuits, for example! And they sell the most amazing rotis. They're pre-rolled, so you just have to fry them up (*without* oil, unless you want to clog an artery), and they just melt in your mouth, it's amazing. Besides which, they sell all kinds of little Indian snacks, like murukku, or namkeen, or papad. Even aam papad! Even if you're not Indian, I would recommend this shop. It's full of all the things you'd find in an authentic Indian snackbar.

I love anything that brings the best of small-town sensibilities into the city. I also love a good…read moremixed business. In fact, I think I just love the the category name in itself. Every time I pass Joe & Roy's Mixed Business I imagine Joe and Roy's conversation over an espresso or two: Joe: I was thinking of opening up a supermarket Roy: Yeah? I was thinking of opening up a deli, or maybe a florist. Joe: How about we mix those businesses together? Roy: Can we do that? What would we call it? Joe: How about Joe and Roy's Mixed Business? Roy: YES. (It differs a little from time to time, but that's generally how it goes.) Joe and Roy's business is a mixture of fresh fruit and veg, breads, magazines, lollies, toiletries, ice creams, your general grocery goods and fresh flowers, all at decent prices for what I've come to expect of suburban corner stores/mixed businesses. Their impressive list of brands include Pastabilities Frozen Pastas, Movenpick and New Zealand Natural ice cream, Maggie Beer pasta sauces and olive oils, a reasonable selection of cheeses (at least three different kinds of feta), Northside Fine Foods deli meats, Yalla yoghurts and Orgran gluten-free products. They've got a small range of party goods (Joe also entertained the idea of a Party Shop for a while there) and their own freshly made pastas (spag bol, fettucini carbonara, etc.). Joe and Roy's is a truly local establishment, with people greeted by name as they enter. Small town sensibilities in a beautiful mixed business. Good one Joe and Roy.

This is a densely packed store with lots of tinned, packaged and frozen goods. It's a curious mix of essentials and luxury products like Maggie Beer Elderflower Ice-Cream. Yum! Fresh food comes in the form of bread or milk, so best pop to the Greengrocer a few shops down if you want something living. They have the occasional English chocolate bar in, so worth keeping an eye out if you're a Double Decker or Wispa fan. The chap who owns it is friendly. He's a friendly grocer though not so friendly as to have a listed phone number. Go in and see him instead.

It really is a one stop shop. It's like your regular corner shop where you can get some groceries or hot food take away, rent movies plus being an internet cafe. The aisles are way less intimidating than your Woolworths or Coles and have more of a homey feel. They even sell home made paper animal shaped sculptures. That's pretty neat in my eyes.

It's the kind of place that always has killer pythons and hand mixed bags of lollies at the counter. You know the ones... with milk bottles, spear mints, raspberries and cream, teeth, jelly beans and rasberries. All the very best lollies crammed into one little sweet bag of childish fun. The real signs of a true blue fair dinkum Aussie corner shop. The sweet Oriental lady behind the counter is so friendly, my girlfriend and I comment on it after we exit. She's very happy for us to be heading to the beach on such and beautiful day. Clearly her manner has an impact, because we find ourselves in there for ages gradually accruing all manner of junk/ drinks/ trashy reading material.... all the crucial ingredients required for an afternoon of sunbaking at Clovelly beach... including obligatory mixed lollies, of course. All the bare essentials you'd expect in a corner shop, and a refreshing change from the supermarket. No crowds here. Just one man patiently waiting for us to finalise our mounting pile of goodies. Sorry mate!

This could mean…read morea number of things; It could mean that they hadn't restocked yet, that the product which usually took up inhabitance on that shelf were out, or simply that the shelf was barren. I didn't let it bother me as I was not here to inspect the shelves for fullgevity. (A new word I've created where I've mixed 'Fullness' and 'longevity', fullgevity.) I walked around the shop and took in the surroundings. It was a small shop and was more corner than super when it came to words describing the kind of shop or market that it was. What they did have though was the product that I was specifically looking for, the Chi drink; New Zealand mineral water with chinese herbs. I hadn't had one in a very long time and for some reason I had a hankering right now. I walked in and up to the fridge and there it was, in small and large sizes. I chose the small and made my purchase. A small shop, family run with products that you can't get everywhere else.
