I was referred to Dr Ravi by my primary care doctor after a routine neck MRI showed an abnormal finding in my spinal cord. I was admittedly quite anxious leading up to the meeting as I knew this could be a dangerous situation. My experience with his office was nothing less than ideal. The office staff were kind and accommodating, and were quite understanding given than a prior appointment caused me to show up 20 minutes late. Dr Ravi took time with me to review all images, explain everything he was seeing and all that was mentioned in the radiology report, putting it in a context that made me feel much more at ease. UPDATE: Dr. Ramachandran called personally to apologize for the issues with my first visit, after this review was posted. I sat with his apology for a few days and spoke with family before deciding next steps. I chose to return simply to determine if my first assessment was in fact warranted. I'm still unsure, but the office staff went out of their way to be solicitous, going so far as to update me at the 15-minute mark that Dr was a little delayed and would be with me shortly. When he arrived, Dr. Ravi was kind, courteous, and again apologized for the issues. He spent several minutes going over my options, answering all my questions (some of which, I'm sure, I repeated in multiple ways) Overall, a much more pleasant, productive experience. The cynic in me wonders how much this was attributed to the review or if I happened upon the office and staff on an "off" day. After a nasty rear end collision I tore some muscles in my neck and it's slightly misaligned to the discs in my C5 mid back between the shoulders and the upper neck shoulder area. I went to Ravi and he gave me some advice and directed me in the right medical sound advice. With small adjustments and diet changes , we were able to correct the problem without Surgical procedures. I was able to reduce inflammation and learn correct posturing orthopedic recovery exercises and ergonomics. He may be a great surgeon, but he kept us waiting for more than an hour. And then gave us 10 min of his time.

I would not recommend Dr. Ravi. The first appt on I waited one hour on a zoom call and no one ever showed up and then was told he had not reviewed my films. I also had to call for the link to the zoom. The second visit, I waited 30 minutes for the first appt of the day and was told he needed to review my film, after 30 minutes I was told he had an emergency and was running behind. I then was given an appt without any consultation regarding if that was a convenient time. They tried to tell me he had been called to an emergency before he got to the office, so why was I told when I got there he was reviewing my films? Then I got a call about a cancellation and went in and again waited 30 minutes while he reviewed my films again? Literally this is the 3rd time I was told this. I could hear them talking in the lobby so not really sure what that was all about. When he came in, he was not warm at all, appeared to be slightly amused as to why I was even there? He came across very arrogant and like I was wasting his time. The office is very cold and uninviting. If you are having back issues, I would highly recommend you do not see Dr. Ravi but seek some other spine specialist. My experience was very negative and I would never recommend him. read more

I was referred to Dr. Ravi R. AFTER I interviewed 4 spinal surgeons. The day BEFORE my surgery I called to say I might have messed up my fasting test and added a few more questions; only to learn the front office had NOT even gotten insurance approval for the surgery. I have Blue Cross and a PPO which means I can go to ANY facility as well as Medicare part A. They said they had been working on it for weeks which I find hard to believe. The stress of having to CANCEL the surgery and the money I am out for boarding 3 dogs the night before and getting a hotel in Folsom (all non-refundable). It was even suggested I go through the surgery WITHOUT the insurance approval (ARE YOU KIDDING ME?) I left 3 messages for the Dr. himself to call which of course he never did!!! This was an emotional nightmare. If I decide to have the surgery it will be with one of the other Dr.'s I interviewed. If I was Dr. Ravi I would get a new office manager and CALL your patients yourself. VERY DISAPPOINTED!!!! I called this place to find another Ortho provider since my Ortho unexpectedly needed to go on early retirement due to medical condition. I was confused when a staff answered the phone, she informed me that I needed to have an MRI prior to seeing their provider. I explained to her that I no longer have a doctor, so how can I get an MRI because I would need a rx for MRI and yet she insisted that I cannot be seen without an MRI. I'm calling to get establish with the new provider so how can I get an MRI when my previous doctor has now retired??? I had a WONDERFUL experience with Dr. Ravi Ramachandran! From initial consultation, he went thru my history (over 4 years of pain), considered everything that needed repair, and gave his opinion on what should be treated first, then asked me if I agreed with and how I felt about his opinions. I loved that he wanted my input. Office staff treated me with respect and kindness, scheduling appointments, surgery date and rescheduling my surgery, due to another patients' emergency needs. (My surgery was only put off for three days). I felt very lucky that staff was able to fit my procedure back into his schedule so quickly! I'm 7 months post surgery. Allowing Dr. Ravi to operate on me was the best decision I've ever made regarding my health. I cannot explain how much better I feel since he repaired my dinner. Recently, I was in the hospital waiting for gall bladder surgery and he walked by. He stopped by and spoke with me, clapping my hands and telling me everything will be fine. Talk about reassurance!! Absolutely disgusted with this place. The front staff is horrendous and extremely cold. They don't care about you or the reason you are there at all. I had to call them (because they will never call you first) and they said Ravi reviewed my CT and MRI scans stating he didn't see anything operable on my scans, and that he would not see me. I am not upset that he doesn't want to take my case on, I am upset they refused to give me a reason why. All they would say is that he doesn't see anything wrong. I asked if i could meet with him or even take a phone call to get his opinion of what he sees on the imaging, and what he recommends I do about it. However the front desk gatekeep and told me if "Dr. Ravi talks to every patient about what he sees it would be an issue." I was disgusted and absolutely livid. All I wanted was his opinion. A five minute phone call would have even been enough. Don't come here it is a complete waste of time and they don't give a shit about you. Dr. Ravi if you see this hope you can fix your staff issues or at least give your potential patients five minutes of your freaking time. All we asked for is your freaking opinion. Dr. Ravi is a rare find-- a surgeon who will be honest with you and advise you on the best path forward for your health. Having worked in the medical field for almost 20 years I have interaction with many surgeons as comparison points. There are some who just operate without giving thought to the patient's best outcome. Dr. Ravi is the opposite of that. He was very gracious and did a thorough history & physical exam and reviewed all my imaging. He also asked me questions about my desired outcomes and level of activity. Based on all the findings for my case, he recommended a conservative management approach, meaning I do not have to undergo surgery immediately (or potentially ever, fingers crossed). Dr. Ravi also educated me on symptoms to be aware of and let me know I was welcome to follow up with any concerns. For those who are unfamiliar with today's medical system, paperwork and wait times can be quite surprising, but I found that Dr. Ravi's team communicated very well in the event of unexpected delays. Also I would like to point out that he does not have responsibility for all the care team at the hospital. Unfortunately there is a spectrum of caregiving but all my interactions with Dr. Ravi's team have set the high bar for care and communication. If surgery were warranted I would feel very comfortable putting myself in Dr. Ravi's hands. His degrees from Harvard, Stanford, Princeton and Yale are evidence of world class training, but Dr. Ravi has gone beyond that and is an excellent surgeon. My experience with Dr. Ravi Ramachandran has been superb. I am walking pain free, with no medication, three weeks after having a fusion of my L4 and L5. The suggested time of recovery to this level is 6 weeks, it took me less than 3. When I met Dr. Ravi, I knew I had met someone special. I was very impressed and comforted when reading his diplomas from Stanford and Harvard. Yet it was upon meeting him that I got that intuitive sense that here was someone extraordinary; someone with a bit more light in their eyes, someone with a gift. I have never had such a serious operation with such significant alteration to my body. Yet I am living now as if I had just stubbed my toe...it is almost a sense of the "miraculous", and I do not use that word frivolously. All of the nerve pain which had been so debilitating is gone. All of the pain from the surgery is gone, except a slight pain where the incision is healing. It is as if there was never a problem. Three weeks; I am writing this three weeks after my surgery. First, let me say, I have no doubt Dr. Ramashandran is an excellent surgeon. i AM DISAPPOINTED BECAUSE I HAVE HAD TO 'RUN DOWN ANY COMMUNICATION'. My referral was sent to them but I never received a call for an appoointment. When I called the office I was told I needed and MRI before he would see me. I had the MRI done but, again, didn't get a call for an appointment.When I called I was told that he wouldn't see me as I was not a surgical candidate. He wouldn't see me to even explain why I have this condition, what to do about it or what I can expect for my future. I was only able to talk to the receptionist. She said that is not the way he does things. i should go to pain management. I asked if they would answer my physical questions, they aren't spine experts. He is the specialist. She then told me I can go online and request an online consultation. Tell me, would that be more convenient, not even considering how impersonal that is. She said 'yes but he does charge for that. I asked how much and she said $250.00. WOW. My co-pay is $50.00 but I am to pay a famous specialist to treat me like a statistic. My MRI shows degenerative spine from T-10 to S-1. I already knew that my cervical, 5 joints, was fusing from it. I am 78 years old, in so much pain, and all I was asking for is an explanation. Well, that meant no money for performing surgery. What's next, a wheel chair? But, the ticker is, he saw my husband to recommend the same thing he is recommending for me and I read on the Yelp comments he has done the same for others. It felt like walking into a Beverly Hills Cosmetic surgeons office. The paper work was like filling out a loan application for a house. Not to mention the wait time 55 minutes sitting in a room. I finally came out and asked the assistant how much longer my appointment was at 11 am it's now 1145 am. She then said not much longer. I came here for a second opinion of an MRI done by my neurologist. His lengthy summary including the radiologist numerous notations stating disc osteophyte; unconvertible hypertrophy and facet joint arthropathy-right greater then left with right neural forminal stinosis just to mention a few of the report listings. I have had numbness in legs and arms. With other not so normal symptoms. I can appreciate that as he states my MRI is remarkable there def are some things not normal. He told me to not worry about my symptoms and nothing causing it. He did not bother to ask about my autoimmune disease. More importantly during my time on my exam which he was 55 min late to he also took a cell phone call and told me he needs to step out. He was gone another 10 min. As I got up to leave he came back in. He was passive about my concerns and treated me like I was in and out for a Botox injection. Hard to find Drs that give a dam these days. Or maybe it's just the field of Spine medicine. To say the least not impressed. read more

Absolutely 5 Stars! Don't let Dr. Ravi's youthful appearance fool you. He is a brilliant, confident, highly educated & formidable spinal surgeon. When informed he was educated and trained at Harvard, Yale, Princeton & Stanford, I was absolutely certain I was in good hands. He and his staff, Mallory, are very compassionate people and are committed to providing their patients with the best care possible. I know Dr. Ravi always strives do his best at relieving his patients' pain and giving them the "quality of life" every one of us deserves. For my surgery, he employed a great team of doctors & nurses. Moments before my surgery, each doctor introduced themself to me and spoke about their particular role. This was very comforting. I was very impressed to learn that Dr. Ravi brings in a great Neurologist who utilizes an acupuncture needles system for "intraoperative neuro-monitoring." This monitoring helps Dr. Ravi make sure he is coming in contact with the correct area to be worked on and not touching or affecting certain critical nerves or muscles during the surgery. Knowing this was also very calming for me. Immediately after my surgery, I could already feel a huge difference. I feel that once the recovery & healing process are complete, I will be able to live a better life. I am so happy I had the operation done and grateful it was Dr. Ravi who performed it. I have had serious back and neck issues over the past 25 years due to a car crash. I suffered herniated discs at L4-L5 and C4-C5, and as a result I have been in constant pain for over 25 years. I have seen countless doctors over the years, and have endured all kinds of treatments such as chiropractic, acupuncture, and more recently cortisone shots, on top of the daily medication that I have been taking for years. All of which are temporary "band-aids" . I have been on Permanent Disability since 2004 I have tried to be diligent in keeping flexible by stretching, and gym work, together with frequent physical therapy, including traction, but it had become evident that surgery was looking to be a potential option. I had consultations with two Sacramento based surgeons, prior to seeing Dr. Ravi. One of these gentlemen said, and I quote: 'I've seen your MRI, and your back looks horrible, really horrible". Neither one could offer a solution other than "If pain starts radiating down your right leg, then I may be able to help you". Not very encouraging. Until I met Dr. Ravi. When I saw the qualifications that Dr. Ravi possesses, I knew I was in the right hands. He explained in a very simple manner, what my main problem areas were, and what he could do to help. He told me that a Laminectomy would help to free up space, and prevent nerves rubbing, which is the key issue with me...He explained that there was an 85% chance that I would benefit from the procedure. I saw him on November 10 2016, and due to an opening in his schedule, he was able to operate on November 15 2016. I walked out of the hospital under my own steam, and was told that it would be about a 6 week recovery. Although I was on some very heavy medication, I noticed almost immediately that it was far less painful, and much easier for me to get out of bed in the mornings. This had been a problem for years, but not any more!! I felt progressively better daily, to the point that I was able to ride my bike for short distances within 10 days, and I was able to stop the medication after 14 days, although I continued to keep on the same meds that I have been using for years. As of this week, Dec 4, I have since been prescribed a time release pain patch, ostensibly for my neck pain, and this proven to be highly effective in alleviating any further back pain, and between the surgery and this new medication, I can state that I am feeling the best I have felt for years. I have now been able to discontinue the regular cocktail of drugs now that the patch is a more effective method. I can't thank or praise Dr. Ravi highly enough. He is the epitome of professionalism, and his talent speaks for itself. He has given me a fresh chance at a better quality of life, and at my age, 63, you need as much quality as you can get. I will be discussing any potential neck surgery with Dr. Ravi in due course, but only after my healing is complete. I'm amazed that my recuperation has been so effective as yet, and Dr. Ravi has given me licence to go back to the fitness routine that I employed for years, which is a very encouraging sign. I came to Dr Ravi looking for hope to have my spine surgery done. I have seen 4 other surgeons before Dr Ravi and each one declined my surgery. They were either uncomfortable or not willing to do it. I prayed and asked God to send me someone and Dr Ravi came along and said he will do it. Although he was nervous about it but willing to do it. That meant the world to me. I knew right there that my prayers were answered. 4 and half years finding someone and he came along and did it. He is not only a handsome dude but awesome. He helped me when I answered questions and he made sure I was taken care of. His staff Erica, Vanessa, Melanie, and Danae are not only very helpful but very Gorgeous. I have several health issues and many doctors and specialists, but Dr Ravi put me and my husband at ease with the very first appointment. He was friendly, patient, answered any and all questions and just saint leave the room until he knew we had all the information we wanted. I saw three other "spine specialists" before finding Dr. Ravi. All of my pain was gravity related at the waistline with no radiating pain in the legs. The severe pain prevented me from doing anything including golf, walking in the park with grandchildren, walking through stores and even standing to grill and cook. After studying my films and MRI Dr Ravi said he could help me and described a simple laminectomy. He said I would be back on the golf course in six weeks. WOW, this brilliant humble man did what he said and the outcome is unbelievable! No more back pain and I have not felt this good in five years. I have no doubt Dr. Ravi is an excellent surgeon. My experience with his practice, customer service and his office staff has been absolutely horrendous. I was seen in his office a few times and he recommended lumbar epidural injections. Thankfully, I also had consults with a pain management MD prior to receiving the injections. When I arrived for the procedures, the facility stated they had never received any orders from Dr. Ravi. I had a follow up appointment in November with Dr. Ravi and he suggested an updated MRI. Initially, the order was put through however I called his office requesting that it be sent to another facility due to insurance coverage. It is now mid January and I have called his office upwards of 20x, having left multiple messages. To compound my frustrations, when my call was answered and finally spoke to someone in the office, I was told they were short staffed and that they were busy. I fully understand being short staffed but patient care and communication should always be a priority. I still do not have an update regarding the status of the MRI, 10 weeks after the office visit. I am disappointed by the lack of communication and the perception that my condition is not a priority. I have been forced to search out another physician to continue my care. I am extremely apprehensive to recommend care provided by this physician and his staff. read more

I suffered from low back pain and sciatica for several months, due to a bulging disc in my lumbar spine. I tried all the conservative methods, such as OTC anti inflammatory meds, ice packs, heating pads, electrical stimulation and physical therapy. My family physician put me on 12-day courses of oral steroids on two separate occasions, and I went to the pain clinic and had a cortisone shot. Unfortunately, none of the above worked. My pain got progressively worse, to the point that I had to use a cane to get around and was mostly bed-bound. I wasn't able to take care of my family, drive, go grocery shopping, or any type of housework. I finally decided to try a different approach and went to see Dr. Ravi. He has an extensive background in spinal surgery and suggested I have a microdiscectomy - a minimally invasive procedure done on an outpatient basis where only the part of the disc that is bulging is removed. I agreed, and Dr. Ravi performed the surgery. It was truly a miracle: my sensation returned, the tingling and numbness disappeared, and I progressively regained my strength. Now, two months post-op, I feel completely cured! There's no more pain, no limitations... I can finally live my life again. Thank you Dr. Ravi - I owe it all to you. ABSOLUTELY WORTH THE WAIT!! I suffered with nerve pain in my back and legs for three years before meeting Dr. Ravi. I was so happy he took me as a patient because I had already heard and read glowing reports about him, none of which was exaggerated. Not only is he extremely competent, but he's so very kind as well. And he exudes such confidence (NOT arrogance) that you'll just know you've come to the right place AND person, and that help is on the way. Prior to the surgery (laminectomy and fusion), I had almost forgotten what feeling good felt like, but the relief from the awful nerve pain in my leg was almost instantaneous, and continued to improve in the following days and weeks, etc. Within three weeks of my surgery, I noticed the spring in my step returning and I've felt taller ever since because I'm standing straight again. I didn't even realize how much I had stooped during the previous three years trying to get the pressure off of the nerves in my back and legs. I was referred to Dr Ramachandran by Mercy Folsom hospital after a visit to their ER and resulting MRI, CT, and XRay scans revealed possible L3/L4 disc damage compressing the nerve bundle exiting the spine on the left side, which would explain the excruciating pain and lower leg numbness in my left leg. I called Dr. Ramachandran's office the next business day and was told that I can't actually see the doctor to go over the tests and symptoms and a course of treatment, but that instead he would look at the scans and call back and either tell me that surgery might be needed or not. If so then I might get to see the doctor and if not they would tell me to go elsewhere and seek treatment. One week later of missed work and continuous heavy pain they called me to tell me to go seek pain management and physical therapy, without me ever getting to talk to the doctor or him explaining why despite the hospital test showing a damaged disc I should seek physical therapy to remedy the situation. What a waste of time and poor medical service to not even talk to a patient referred to you by a hospital that you are affiliated with, much less make them wait a week to get a one-way communication that they can't help you. I have complained to Mercy Folsom for sending me to this doctor when perhaps they should have sent me to a spine doctor that covers all aspects of care and not just surgery, and to this doctor I would suggest you tell prospective patients that you don't actually treat general spine problems but instead do only surgery and that they should instead seek a doctor that does comprehensive medical work on the spine and only if that doctor recommends surgery should they refer them to you for only that very narrow specialized service. A complete waste of time missing a week of work and suffering much needless pain due to the broken process between this doctor and Mercy Folsom. read more

Dr. Ravi recently performed lumbar surgery on me. I highly recommend him. He takes a conservative approach to surgery, encouraging his patients to try non-surgical interventions first. He is very well educated and extremely talented without a trace of arrogance. His interpersonal skills and comforting bedside manner belie his relatively young age. When I wasn't one of the lucky ones who felt immediate post-surgical relief, his confidence and reassurances helped me to be patient through the rough parts. read more
