I personally had the honor to meet Dr. Phillip Orisek, although it may not have been for the preferred reasons, although beings the unfortunate circumstances I wouldn't have chosen anyone else. The result ended up being a major back surgery of a Lumbar 360 Infusion at two levels, with titanium cage placement and several bone grafts with it. The reason for our encounter was, I ended up being referred to him as an emergency, due to a failed Lumbar Laminectomy 7 months prior. Fast forward 20 years later (now) I've done okay, but we're at a crossroads of having to go back to surgery again. I'm very grateful for him and the work he had done. If you are going to get non invasive back surgery from Dr Orisek, be very careful. Do some research and consult at least two other Drs. 7 1/2 weeks out from my L5 S1 Fusion I am in extreme pain. They do not like to prescribe any pain medication. I had the surgery done here in El Dorado Hills in the West Coast Joint and Spine Center. This is not a hospital, there is no aftercare. Dr Orisek finally admitted that the surgery had been way harder than he was expecting. But his CEO Dr Vinita Khare MD is harsh, mean, and bullying. Her job seems to be to try and get rid of you. Their office is pleasant but very inefficient. I have been left in excruciating pain for over 7 weeks with totally haphazard prescriptions for pain medication. I am not a drug addict. I am trying to recover from intensive back surgery. This is on track to be one of the worst experiences of my life. My pain this morning has been so bad I can barely stand up and walk. No one warned me about this. They are now suggesting I try to go to pain management. This has worn me out mentally, physically, and emotionally. If the pain doesn't end in another 5 weeks I am probably looking at getting another more invasive surgery to try and fix this. My back hurts way worse than it did before the surgery. It hurts so bad I have called 911 twice to go to Folsom Mercy Emergency Room for help with pain. I have been to Urgent Care here in EDH for pain shots. It's been so bad at times I have felt suicidal. Dr Orisek's surgery left a pinched sciatic nerve in my back all the way down my left leg and into my foot, causing extreme pain in my leg and numbness in my foot. My back joints, the lowest vertebra and my pelvis are still bone on bone but locked in place by Dr Orisek's 4 screws, plates and bolts. I am still in the middle of this nightmare. Bed side manner is nonexistent and honestly think he should hire someone to do the talking for him. To make matters worse his surgery was a failure and had to get a new surgeon to fix his mistake. Dr. Orisek is an amazing surgeon that is especially skilled at getting good results for his patients through his surgical skill and minimizing all risks of surgical complications. I have had 2 spinal fusions done by Dr. Orisek and both had excellent results despite my abnormal anatomy (scoliosis, Bertolotti's / transitional vertebrae). I noticed that he takes extra measures to avoid complications and has a great record of positive outcomes because of it. Ask your potential surgeon what measures they take to avoid infection, nerve damage and excessive blood loss during the procedure. Dr. Orisek is an amazingly skilled Orthopedic surgeon. He did a minimally invasive spinal fusion surgery on my back on 12/29/23. He performs this type of surgery at least weekly. On the day of surgery I was barely able to walk into the hospital and needed the assistance of a wheelchair. That night after surgery, I was able to get up to use the bathroom and the pain I had been experiencing for the last 8+ months was completely gone, I didn't need any assistance or a walker and I only had to stay in the hospital overnight. The pain I experienced was nerve pain which can be pretty painful but i only needed to be on pain medication for two weeks after my surgery. It has been three months since my surgery and I'm able to do about just about anything except twisting at my waist. The only discomfort I have if you want to call it that is tightness around the area he did the surgery when I bend over to reach something on the floor. I was even out weeding in my garden this weekend. I have two incisions on either side of my spine and they're only 2 inches long and have healed very nicely. He his office staff are great and totally professional. He has a nice sense of humor which makes him easy to talk. His colleagues do not do the same type of surgery (minimally invasive) that he does and the recovery takes soooo much longer and carries much more pain not to mention the increased risk of infection. It would be nice if more orthopedic surgeons in this area would do minimally invasive surgeries on their patients. It's much safer and better for patients than totally opening the back up to get to the spine. I would recommend Dr. Orisek without reservation. So if you need spinal fusion surgery, schedule a second opinion with Dr. Orisek so he can assess your particular situation and give you his recommendation for such a repair. You'll be glad you did. I was referred to Dr. Orisek because I had a bone spur in my neck pushing on a nerve in my shoulder and arm. I had disc replacement surgery on March 17th. I'm 6 weeks post op and I feel amazing. He is truly a talented surgeon and the scar is very small and was put in the natural crease of my neck. It is true, his office is VERY busy and the wait time to be seen can be a very long time. One time, I waited over an hour and he had to reschedule because he had a deposition, it was very frustrating. At first, honestly, this was very annoying, but it was worth it to get in with a high reputable surgeon. I learned that my best bet was to get the earliest/1st appointment of the morning and arrive early! All of my subsequent appointments were on time :) He's the best in Sacramento area and the other possible physician I was referred to was in San Francisco and the commute for post ops seemed like more hassle than to just wait to get in with Orisek. He doesn't have a coddling best bedside manner, it's straight to business, but that was not a big deal for me, I wanted someone who was going to do an amazing job, and he did. They make you wait over an hour before you actually even see anyone. Schedule your appointment over other clients so they won't have time for you and the women are snooty. They even warn you before you'd schedule the appointment that you better have everything before you show up or they will have to reschedule you a month later because they are so over booked. I think I only saw one other person get called before I did and I waited 30 min in the waiting room. The appointment was a joke. Doctor kept texting during my appointment and acted like he was stoned. Definitely will not be coming back. read more

Dr. Orisek is probably one of the best spinal surgeons in the area. As with many bright people, he may appear at first to be distant, but I don't believe he is. I have seen him multiple times and he is friendly and caring. He is an excellent surgeon and that is the reason he is overbooked: the demand for his services are greater than his available time. Yes, you usually have to wait in the office as much as an hour, and you may sit in the treatment room 30 minutes. Once my husband and I were placed in a waiting room and about an hour later the young lady came back and was extremely embarrassed. She explained that she had actually "forgotten us". The actual treatment involved a herniated disk. He performed a "diskectomy" so I would have less of a scar. The scar is about 2" long but on the back of my neck where I don't see it so it's fine. The surgery was a success and the pain left immediately. However, a couple of days after surgery I made a wrong move and apparently pulled out some stitches under the skin. He didn't want to operate again so soon and felt it would improve. It was exceedingly painful for 4 to 6 weeks but finally did start getting better. A year later I am still having some lasting effects, so he has ordered another MRI. I have very bad disks in my neck and feel sure I will have to have more surgery in the future. I completely trust Dr. Orisek and am confident that he will do what he needs to do. The reason for the four stars is that it is always a long wait at the office, and I would prefer they greet you upon arrival. That is not a reason for reducing the rating by more than one star, however, since the reason you see the Dr. is for the quality of his care, not his office staff. I think he is a great Dr. and definitely deserves 4 or 5 stars. read more

I had been suffering with acute back pain for years which worsened significantly last year. I had seen Dr. Orisek some three years ago, but he declined to suggest surgery at that time. I saw him again last Oct., and after he saw my recent x-rays and MRI, I decided to go with the surgery. On Nov. 7, I had the surgery (fusion from S1 to L4), spent 6 days in the hospital, three in a terrible skilled nursing facility, went home and recovered on my own. By the second week, I was feeling much better, and today I am almost pain free. He did minimally-invasive surgery, and I cannot thank him enough. One of the things I like about Dr. Orisek is his casual manner. He is charming yet absolutely cares about you and your ailments. I had a spinal fusion which went well but less than a year later the "screws came loose" and he had to go back in to remove them. That was not fun. Well I still have pain so he said I needed a procedure on my back where they inject steroids and novacain. That is scheduled for later this month and then I pray that I'm finished with this business. Did I forget to say I'm 79 years old so none of this has been easy for me but I'm seeing it through to the end! Regarding the office staff: they are a superb group of people who are hindered by the scheduling and the fact that Dr. O takes time with the patients. Please be nice to them. Looking for a Dr. who takes the time to take care of you? Dr. Orisek is awesome. At first I didn't think he had the 'sweetest' bedside manner, but after building a rapport with him, I LOVE him! He's direct- you don't have to read in between the lines with him. He DOES care, and I think Dr's have to also come to build trust with their patients as much as patients have to come to build trust with their Dr's. At first I thought they were a bit 'stuffy' because the window is closed when you go to the office, and it opens every few minutes or so. They are easy to reach when I call, accommodating if I need to reschedule an appointment, and very responsive when I have matters that need following up on. My experience with Dr. Orisek has been great. He replaced my herniated disc with a prosthetic last year and I felt better right away, even as I woke up from anesthetic I noticed that the nerve pressure was alleviated. He's very easy to talk to, and his staff is incredibly helpful. Bring a book because the waiting room is like purgatory in the afternoons. I've had the x-rays and MRI's of my robo-neck looked at by Bay Area surgeons and they have all agreed that the work he does is excellent. The head of spine surgery for Kaiser in Oakland said the implant placing was perfect and doing exactly what it was supposed to do. Another spine surgeon, who is now a QME doctor for worker's comp also agreed that he did an exemplary job, even going above and beyond to eliminate bone spurs. I could transfer the rest of my care to another surgeon in the bay area but I'd rather drive to the Sacramento area to stick with Orisek. As far as personality goes, I think he's enthusiastic about his work and his bedside manner is just the way I'd expect somebody working on my spine to be. He's serious, but he's excited about getting good results. My best advice is to not go empty-handed to the waiting room or you'll die of boredom. Other than that, it would appear that he is an exemplary surgeon according to my own experience and the opinion of other surgeons in his field. read more

Dr. Orisek did a spine surgery to me for a herniated disc in my low back. I am still in the midst of recovery as I write this review, but I can tell you that I do feel much much better already compared to pre-surgery. As a person, Dr. Orisek may seem distant when you first meet him, but that's only because he doesn't know you yet and he warms up quickly. You end up realizing that he is a very nice person who cares a lot about his patients. I can tell you that I have now known Dr. Orisek for a long time and he is a very caring and compassionate person, and first and foremost he's a great surgeon. He is very reassuring, he helps you feel at ease that he has the capability to do the task at hand. Although I was very scared to have a surgery, I knew it was necessary and Dr. Orisek made me feel extremely reassured the morning of the operation with his calm and reassuring demeanor, he even cracked a couple jokes to me just to try to make me laugh to lighten the mood of the situation. I loved that more than words can express. He is regarded as one of the top, and very likely the top spinal surgeon in the Sacramento region. The one thing I love about Dr. Orisek is that he is not a guy who ever pushes surgery, on the contrary, he always tries non-surgical and conservative treatments first. He is not pushy and will never make you feel pressured to do a surgery of any kind, and that alone is a quality to be treasured since seeing a spine surgeon is so nerve wracking in itself. He tends to be overbooked, but as one other reviewer stated, this is due to the fact that he is in such high demand and only has so much time available. And believe me, when he treats you for your condition you will soon understand why he is in such high demand.
