We've been getting amazing apples and stone fruit from the Maynard farms at the Williamsburg…read morefarmers market for years. But last fall, we had an experience at the orchard itself that we will never forget. We had the best day walking for hours around the beautiful orchard and picking apples. On the way back to the car with our big bag of fruit we realized that neither of us had the key to the car! It must have dropped at some point in the orchard. We were doomed! There was no way we were going to find a small car key within the fields. We walked around for a while looking and gave up we were about to call for a tow. Then we came upon one of the farmers driving the tractor, and showed him the only picture we had taken that entire day. He looked at it for a few seconds and went off in search of the key. 10 or 15 minutes later, we saw him calling for us in the distance. As we got closer, we saw him laughing and shaking his head - amazingly, he had found the needle in the haystack, and we were saved! That day we also got to meet his daughter and grandson, who were taking a ride on his tractor through the orchard and picking apples of their own. Maynard's apples and stone fruit worlds above any of the others we can find in the area, and we stock up every Saturday. But in addition to the quality of the fruit, the farmers are all so nice and always let you taste what's in season before you purchase. And after this experience, it was clear to us that Maynard farms is truly family and community-oriented organization, and made us even happier to buy our fruit from them every week. Thank you for everything! See you on Saturday ;) Love, Melissa and Sami

Also, since it's a farm we expected dirt and dust, that's part of the fun! But on several occasions when visiting the farmhouse to use the bathroom, we found it to be very dirty with hanging strips of dead flies, spiders in the open window, and unclean hand towels hanging up that looked like they had not been cleaned in weeks with no access to paper towels. We also noticed during an after school event where food was served that a chicken walked up and ate off the same salad bowel that was being served to people. I hope they fix these issues and really turn it around soon. It's a shame it's gotten like this.

WHY SHOP AT LOCAL FARMS? Given the frightening practices, food recalls, and the heavy-handed use of pesticides by high production "corporate " farms, careless treatment of those we trust with our food supply, I have been migrating away from supermarket, produce, covered with appeal and forever chemicals toward local farms.
