Ambience: A few friends and I enjoyed a table out on the plaza. The concourse has a monument in the middle withs several shops and restaurants. Perhaps the best part is the market atmosphere where vendors sell their locally grown fruits and vegetables. You could smell some of the fresh produce from where we sat. We had a table umbrella which shielded us from the sun which I'm sure comes into handy when it gets hot out. We were the only Americans at the restaurant so it was a little refreshing to hear conversational German.
Food: I had the Jagger Schnitzel with a side salad and a local hefeweizen. All excellent. First, the salad was outstanding. As I've mentioned before, vegetables are a true mark of a great restaurant. I don't know what they put in the salad but it left me begging for more. In particular, the carrots were to die for; hands-down, they were the best shredded carrots I have ever had the joy of tasting. The freshness and flavor of the salad leads me to believe that it was locally grown.
Normally, I do not eat fried foods at fine restaurants but the Jagger Schnitzel was well worth the deviation. It was flavorful and did not leave me with a sinking, greasy feeling at the end of the meal. Also, the meet was not over breaded. The sauce which went with the schnitzel could have been a little lighter but it complimented the schnitzel pretty well.
I decided to go with the local hefeweizen that, in German fashion, was a very heavy beer. It was very flavorful, but did not have a strong bitterness or distinctive aftertaste. There were strong hints of citrus with a smooth finish.
Service: I always count it a huge win when the staff can speak English, though I respect the fact that we were at a German restaurant. Our waitress's English was broken but very much understandable. She was gracious and worked with us to get through the menu. She explained the things we could not understand and gave us a few pointers with the menu. She split the check with no issues and helped us with credit cards and euro closeouts.
Everything was prompt and made to order. She ensured we didn't need anything. I'm not sure if the other waitstaff is as good but I don't think we could have asked for a more attentive waitress.
Location: Because the restaurant sits on the concourse in Trier's town center, we didn't have to deal with car traffic. There was no smog or vehicle noise; this made eating pretty pleasant. Additionally, the passersby kept their distance from the tables so there was not a whole lot of noise from the transients. There was plenty of seating outside the restaurant because of the wide plaza area so I wouldn't worry too much about reserving a table unless it's raining.
Overall: I'm glad this was my first experience with German cuisine in Germany. The restaurant has great food without the pretension. Any restaurant that can do vegetables well get kudos from me; in this case, they really impressed me. The location and mood was appropriate for a casual restaurant. And, the service was a huge positive. As casual dines go, this is one of the best. read more
