If you pet has an infection, a cut or some other mild malaise; Dr. Hal Waldman is your man…read more However, if it is is a serious condition; he refers you to VCA Animal Hospital of Westbury, NY. Having used him for several years, for many cats, I heeded his advice. I found VCA to be a less than a commendable experience, which I reported on here, in Yelp. Long and short of it; they diagnosed my cat, Nala, with bladder stones and insisted she have near immediate surgery. Given her Age; I was reluctant. After conferring with an expert in feline urogloy, Dr. Grauer, I opted to try and resolve her condition via dietary change. It proved to be fairly successful; she no longer passed blood in her urine and her stones have not progressed. When I informed Dr. Waldman of my decision he became outraged, belligerent and bellowed, "if I didn't allow VCA to perform the surgery; he would never treat Nala again!" In my estimation; he stood to benefit from the "costly" surgery. When I mentioned this to the expert, Dr. Grauer, he urged me to take Nala to another Veterinarian; I did. It seems, Dr. Waldman has lost perspective on his mission, "to heal sick & injured animals" and has opted, instead, for a more nefarious agenda. As I said, he's good for cuts, scrapes, vaccinations and mild infections; I wouldn't go to him for anything seriously wrong with your animal. The only 24 hour Veterinarian Hospital worth its "salt," is the Animal Medical Center of NYC. They have an affordable garage just a block away, called "City Parking" at 425 East 61st Street. The hospital is located at 510 East 62nd street. You'll find their rates are far less expensive than any Long Island Animal Hospital, believe me I know, and you can actually sit in a waiting room while your animal is being worked on. In other words you, and your animal, will be treated with dignity and respect. You won't be stuck in your car, for hours, wondering what's happening to your pet.

My husband dropped her off at 8:30AM, I get a text saying she is recovering around 2PM. 15 mins later my husband calls me frantically saying they are doing CPR on Peaches. I'm confused now since I recieved a text saying shes recovering. I call the vet and the receptionist also says they are doing CPR. I ask to speak to the vet, and the vet asks if I would like her to continue CPR. She informed me that have been doing CPR for 25 mins, at this point I realize Peaches is dead and I tell them to stop CPR. I asked why this happened, the vet responds with because shes a brachycephalic dog. My husband works only two blocks from me so we both leave work and head to the vet together. I'm crying my eyes out because Peaches was my first child, my husband is distraught but has to keep it together since we are driving. Peaches had no other health issues besides constipation, she should not have died. We get to the vet, the receptionist says sorry for your loss and points us to a room where they had Peaches body. The vet does not come to us at any point to say she is sorry or to go over the events as to what lead to Peaches untimely death. I shouldn't have lost my little girl. She went in for a simple procedure. This practice has no compassion and its all a money making business. See the attached photos to this review, the text message saying she is recovering (clearly she never recovered so it was misleading), the bill (for the enema which I have no idea if they did and the charge for CPR), and a picture of Peaches. I purchased her from a reputable breeder specifically so that she would not have any breathing issues. So in short, if you plan to take your pet there for a procedure that requires anesthesia, think again. You may leave with a dead body instead.

Dr. Lopez was the kind, compassionate human being who soothed my soul in making this decision and gave my beloved 17+ yr old little doggie a gentle dignified end to his distress. Dr. Lopez explained the x-rays & bloodwork that could be done (at a substantial cost) but was gentle in letting us know that for a dog of this age & degree of heart issues this won't be a real fix. In fact, the stress of it all could prove too much on him. A lesser man would have put potential dollars compassion for animals & pushed a pet owner desperate to take her "baby" home towards that unnecessary route. I am so thankful a friend recommended Assisi to me last year when my little guy was ill. She was also the owner of 2 elderly dogs & couldn't speak highly enough about their care at Assisi. Last year we saw a female Dr., whose name escapes me & we were pleased with her thoroughness & care. Today though was the true test in kindness & professionalism. We were even given a beautiful remembrance of our sweet little boy in the form of a plaster imprint of his paws w a beautiful poem & a vial containing a bit of his fur. I have used other vets & this is beyond a doubt the best I have experienced. Do yourself & your pet a favor & visit Dr. Lopez at Assisi.

Although I am a physician I am not familiar with this procedure in canines, but apparently open incisions are used to cut into the bladder for stone removal. My. Baby girl was discharged in howling pain, which was traumatic for my sister who had retrieved her. She had to return her to demand appropriate pain management for the dog as she was only given gabapentin and Rimadyl (doggie Advil). Even women who have cesarean sections are given strong analgesia for at least 3 days postoperatively. My baby suffered for days. I called the office the following day to get information regarding her diet going forward, as bladder stones can definitely recur. Not only was I not given any information, but I was merely switched to another person who just asked for my financials to make payment for the "extra (much needed) meds." I was given a generic receipt, so my insurance denied the payment, and I was NEVER given the invoice for the surgery, which was almost 3k and paid in full up front. I sent an email requesting the invoice, and to date they refused to respond, so I will not be able to submit for the reimbursement. When my son called the office he was told that they "didn't know" about the insurance- even though it is on file. Although they claim they will submit, I don't have much faith that they will. Further, why was this not handled from the beginning before they tortured my baby? If a human patient is treated this way there are patient advocates & lawyers promptly involved. I guess things are different in Veterinary Medicine.... But animals deserve compassionate care, too. Some people love their pets more than their spouses. In addition, pet parents should be counseled regarding the operative course, what to expect, and how to manage their pets post-operatively at home. My family, and especially my dog, were traumatized by this experience. This vet got good reviews on Yelp for some reason; maybe they are acceptable for routine well care visits and minor illnesses. But if you have a pet with serious illness or require invasive or surgical intervention I encourage you to seek another Veterinary practice.
