It was quickly dried and styled in center or side parts, with lots of volume, lift and swing. Elegant and easy. Derek said he couldn't understand me. I should have left immediately. What I have now is an inexplicable cut, 2-5 " off, barely chin length, huge amounts of hair removed, wispy layers everywhere, and texturizing. He has activated a mass of waves and curls never seen before. From the front, the shape is a cartoonish wide diamond. From the sides, a fat wedge. This is the opposite of what is required for copious, European, fine, porous hair with a nape curl and minimal wave. Derek basically has created a White girl Afro. He somehow dried it beautifully, disguising the weird architectural structure by using a tiny brush on myriad narrow strands, drying them straight, and contorting them via elaborate manual sculpting techniques, product and nearly an hour of work. Maybe he planned to do twice-weekly blowdries on it. I have spent many days and dollars elsewhere experimenting with product, techniques and professional advice while attempting to cope. Derek pleasantly refunded the charges and apologized for the "inconvenience." This is far worse than inconvenient.

All the reviews are legit. I booked a color consultation after my previous color over the last year at two different salons was just not good and so much money (my previous hairstylist moved too far away to continue with her). The consult was around 20 min and free. I liked Ali, I could tell she clearly was very experienced and knew exactly how to fix my color. I then booked my appt for a couple weeks later. She nailed the color correction on the first try. That was 7 weeks ago and I just had my second appt for just a root color touch up. Both appointments were half the price I was previously paying and yet very high quality. What you won't find here: pretentious coffee bar, tons of ornate lighting and over the top decorations. It's a simple environment, and the older I get the more I like that. I don't want to go to a nightclub anymore for my hair to be done. Don't let the simpler atmosphere be a distraction. Walk in, get what you need done, and done right, and walk out. Easy check in, easy to book next appointment or change it, etc. I don't know the other stylists, I'm sure they're great too! But I can absolutely recommend Ali!

Nobody wants to leave a bad review, and no one wants to post a photo of themselves looking…read moreterrible... but this haircut was a reminder that you can't go just anywhere and get a curly haircut. I had a bob, and wanted to go shorter (to what I would describe as a really long pixie). I had a folder of inspiration images, which my stylist and I looked at together. My haircut was $55, and I feel pretty bad about how I look. When I look in the mirror, I have a lot of poorly shaped volume in front, with no hair peeking out from behind/below the ears to balance it out. I'm a huge fan of wet cutting, but it takes an experienced stylist to understand the shape, and how a cut is going to translate once it's dry. The initial haircut was also unintentionally asymmetrical: longer and fuller on one side than the other. I'm just not sure the Aveda school/Aveda method provides enough education or experience with every hair type. Yes, I could go back and ask them to fix it, but (1) I'm not sure making it shorter is going to help things, and (2) even if I had a clear vision for how to improve this cut, I'm not confident that this salon can execute it. I did a little self-trim in the mirror to correct the asymmetry -- something I was willing to do because I felt like it couldn't get any worse. It'll grow back.
