The menu is broken down into cuisines (Korean style, Taiwanese style, Japanese style etc) & the cuisines match the little stalls around the perimeter. Everything on the menu is numbered and there is a notepad on the table where you write down the numbers of the food you want & when you're ready, you use the buzzer on the table to buzz your waiter & hand him your written down order! It's actually pretty efficient and it's nice to have it all sorted without having to flip through the menu while a waiter waits for you to find the thing you want to order! You can also buzz for water or menus with different buttons which I loved! I had a phenomenal beef brisket noodle soup (the brisket was so tender, the noodles perfect and the soup delicious) & really tasty fried Korean chicken drumettes. We also shared some dumplings which were underwhelming. Definitely a unique experience and some tasty food to be had next time you venture out to Box Hill!

This very real very live and bona fidely objective Yelp Elite reviewer thinks this is a fantastic place. * * * Claypot King is a Chinese Claypot restaurant in the gigantic Chinese food court at Box Hill Central shopping center. It is actually a chain. There are other Claypot Kings elsewhere in the greater Melbourne area. The menu is large for a food stall in a shopping court, but small for a sit down Chinese place. As you can guess - claypots are the order of the day. Claypot restaurants generally do soup as well. I had a dried scallop, winter melon, chicken herbal health soup. If you think Jewish chicken soup will make you healthy, (and Jewish chicken soup really does work), Chinese herbal health soup will make you even more healthy healthy. It is lighter, more refreshing, and just as nourishing. It has Chinese healing vegetables to boot. Even though the soup was light and mostly broth, The solid ingredients were delightful and fascinating. The shiitake mushrooms were powerful and flavorful. Dried scallops aren't as good as scallop scallops, but they had their charms. Winter melon is to fill you up and is a background player. There were various herbal bites I could not identify. The chicken stock was light as Chinese chicken stocks tend to be. This was no French double consomme. The chicken was chopped the Chinese way. (Take cleaver. Whack chicken randomly. Throw all the fragments, mis-formed or not, back into the soup. Go off and do something else.) Chinese chicken chopping is not one of the magical attractions of Asian cuisine. But the soup was absolutely positively divine. I noticed while waiting for my soup that the claypots coming out of the kitchen looked outstanding. I would love to have another thirty-eight dishes from the great Claypot King-dom.

Little Woodpecker is a cute little cafe that only the locals seem to know about - most of the customers appear to be on first name basis with the staff, and everybody is friendly & smiling. With a menu that caters to the major groups of customers (vegan, veggie, GF, etc) you can't really go wrong if you pick this place as a brunch destination! All day Breakfast & Lunch, great variety & yummy flavours (not to mention, totally Instagrammable presentation!), great coffee & smoothie options...what's not to love? Plus it changes with the seasons, so you know everything's fresh & delicious! I came with a friend and we got the shareplate (The Last Supper) which was an AMAZING tapas board with baked eggs, grain salad, falafel, dips, roasted mushrooms, fresh sourdough....man, it was quite the smorgasbord! The shareplate for 2 seemed enough for 3 people to split, because we couldn't eat it all (and we can really pack it in, folks. No namby-pamby nibblers here) Honestly, it seemed like the way to do it, because you got to try a little of everything! If you don't choose to go that way though, don't worry - the serves are all generous & every mouthful is bliss :) Also, before I forget - they also have a countertop CHOC-FULL of freshly baked sweets! I was eying off their orange poppyseed muffins & their Doughnuts/Cronuts/danishes/croissants/omg it all looked so good I can't even list it all So yeah! If you're around, get your butt to Little Woodpecker for an awesome meal!
