Ordering process

Went on a bike cruise to box hill looking for a place to have dessert. Stumbled across this charming little place. The window said it had Dessert Story so we thought to give it a shot! So this place is basically a bunch of little side Taiwanese food stores surrounding the dining hall. It's a very food hall vibe, was packed to the brim and the tables and chairs are real close together so you will get close to your dining neighbour lol. You get given a bunch of menus and a notepad menu ordering template and a pen. Hot down your stuff and away you go! We ended up with not only dessert but pork and crab xiao long bao (the pic on the menu was too tempting, plus the yelp reviews for this place!). I was not disappointed! So yum, so nicely parceled and explosives with delicious broth! And the dessert, mega yum! I got the mango sago in coconut milk - took me back to my childhood days :) Unfortunately service was crap. Inattentive staff. We thought it a good thing when the first waitress said the desserts will come after the dumplings. When we finished that I kindly dumped the sauce bowls and ours into the centre ready for clean up. There were heaps of workers around who didn't acknowledge us for 10 mins until we queried. The poor guy we flagged down had no idea what we were on about. Eventually we got our desserts. Still, I forgive them for the awesome food and I will certainly be back to try out what the rest of the Taiwanese street food hall has to offer!

Follow me on Instagram @realayrtonevans Walking into Kitchen Republik, is like walking into a food court in some place like Taiwan. Once your seated at your table and start to flip through the menu, you'll see for yourself the amazing number of choices that's on offer. There is a dumpling theatre, where you can watch the chef's making all the dumplings. And there are all these different signs everywhere - none of them in English. In fact most signs around Box Hill aren't in English so it's like stepping into a completely different cultural hub that is unique to Melbourne. I order their beef noodle soup - which is a specialty in Taiwan and as they say, is made exactly the way they it is made in Taiwan. I also order four of their crab and pork meat dumplings. After around 15 minutes, the waitress brings out my first dish - the beef noodle soup. Around a minute or so later, my dumplings arrive in a cute little basket, complete with their house made dumpling sauce. My soup is swimming with vegetables and noodles that strangely remind me of underwater sea creatures, with their rigged edges. The vegetables and the soup itself is so fresh, you can smell the freshness as your biting into the perfectly cooked and self-marinated beef. And all the ingredients come together to create a scintillating experience that will delight your tastebuds. My dumplings were so soft and exploded with flavour as I bit into them - like all good dumplings should. Really yummy meat, perfectly done. Overall, the whole meal left me feeling revitalised, full, and very satisfied. I would definitely recommend it as a place you have to try at least once. You won't be disappointed. 5/5. Why not follow me on Instagram for lots of really great food pics and reviews @realayrtonevans

Went here for dinner and was a bit confused on the separate but fluid set up of three/four different kitchens. The food and service was prompt and very pleasing! Cash only payment is a bit annoying but starting to get more used to it now. We were so stuffed that we had to take half our meals home in takeaway containers - now it's time for a food coma..

Check your take away orders carefully, because they've got a bad habit of mistakenly providing you with the cheaper versions of dishes.

Foul. The food here is revolting. The service is on par with the food. It looks funky but that's about it. We were idiots for going in.

The roast duck here is mad good!…read more The duck meat was tender and juicy with just the nice amount of duck fat and crispiest duck skin ever. I could eat this all day, every day. They are very reasonably priced too, $12 for rice plate or alternatively you can have the whole duck for $ 38 - the portions were generous! Nothing much going on in term of ambiance, design was very standard to other Chinese place in the area. Also, don't expect tender loving care here, you will be disappointed. Overall, great Cantonese food, budget friendly, quick and reliable! Tip: Cash only.

Authentic, awesome tasting food with friendly wait staff. We were a party of 10, so we got to try over a dozen dishes. The interior is nothing fancy, but the food is as good as anything I have had in Hong Kong. Our favorite dishes were: Roast Duck - excellent, crispy skin, juicy meet, great flavor Soya sauce chicken - perfect, authentic, just how it is meant to be done BBQ Roast Pork - Excellent, very tender, just the right amount of fat, that was also soft and tasty. Crocodile with xo chili sauce - This is the best crocodile meat dish I have ever had. They must pound the meat because it was very tender and went so well with the bold sauce. This should be their signature dish. Green beans, pork and dried fish. Excellent. I could eat this all day. Scallops with vegetable - Excellent, lots of flavor Prawns and egg whites - Loved this, large prawns, cooked perfectly with that fresh crunch. Singapore Noodles - Very tasty Mango Chicken - Tasty, good for kids and less adventurous eaters

I went to the DC Dumpling & Noodle Restaurant for a late lunch on a recent Saturday afternoon…read more I think it was a good thing that we were eating between the usual lunch or dinner hours as the venue was relatively small, and there was still a decent amount of customers in attendance given it was basically afternoon tea time. The service was basic but effective. Super efficient to have us seated, provide us with tea, take our order and deliver us edible gold aka dumplings. We chose to try both a fried and a steamed option - opting for the steamed peking and fried chicken and prawn dumplings. The steamed serve arrived first and we eagerly tucked into the little packages of goodness. The fried serve was the next to arrive and these had to be eaten with a bit more care as the cases had almost seared closed in the frying process which meant they held in a lot of the heat (I burned my lip more than once!) - they could possibly have been taken out of the pan a minute earlier. It was just a problem with the fried dumplings as you were unable to devour them at the rate you desired (immediately!) because of the heat they were containing. Aerating them via chopstick with an added dose of patience and you were good to go. All in all, a delightful experience that has left me dreaming about my next dumpling fix!

All the other patrons sounded like regulars and were addressed by name, which shows those who love it here must come back often. The space is *huge* and a touch nicer than many Chinese restaurants around, without being anything fancy or sophisticated. That said, the prices definitely are 'Balwyn prices'. Most mains start at $25 (well above most Chinese places) and those with big appetites may wonder where the bang for their buck is. (Luckily we had an Entertainment book coupon to help.) We had a few entrees - dumplings (which there was disappointingly few of on the otherwise expansive menu), chive pancake and BBQ off-bone ribs. All were excellent quality, and these dishes are actually priced pretty reasonably at around $7 each. For mains we shared a fantastic beef dish, and the 'crispy chicken', which was the only one that let us down. The bone-filled chicken cuts were not the greatest - a little gristly - and the batter on the skin was like a salt-punch to the mouth. A pity, as all the other dishes and the service had us ready to flat-out rave. It's BYO and the corkage was very reasonable - I think we were charged under $4 for two of us. Would be back but probably only if we had another discount as there's just so much good food around the area for an overall more attractive price point.
