Food Republik is really fun & a tiny bit overwhelming for first timers. It's set out like a food court with lots of little stalls around the perimeter, but is actually one big restaurant with a huge range of options on the menu. The menu is broken down into cuisines (Korean style, Taiwanese style, Japanese style etc) & the cuisines match the little stalls around the perimeter. Everything on the menu is numbered and there is a notepad on the table where you write down the numbers of the food you want & when you're ready, you use the buzzer on the table to buzz your waiter & hand him your written down order! It's actually pretty efficient and it's nice to have it all sorted without having to flip through the menu while a waiter waits for you to find the thing you want to order! You can also buzz for water or menus with different buttons which I loved! I had a phenomenal beef brisket noodle soup (the brisket was so tender, the noodles perfect and the soup delicious) & really tasty fried Korean chicken drumettes. We also shared some dumplings which were underwhelming. Definitely a unique experience and some tasty food to be had next time you venture out to Box Hill! read more

I love this place. 8 or more eateries under one roof with one menu that covers all the eateries, so you can order from the table. Awesome food. The service is fast and friendly. Cash only, no reservations, and there is a line to get in at busy times, but it is well worth the wait. The outstanding dishes for me were: Taiwanese style pork belly burger - these are unbelievable good. Went on a bike cruise to box hill looking for a place to have dessert. Stumbled across this charming little place. The window said it had Dessert Story so we thought to give it a shot! So this place is basically a bunch of little side Taiwanese food stores surrounding the dining hall. It's a very food hall vibe, was packed to the brim and the tables and chairs are real close together so you will get close to your dining neighbour lol. You get given a bunch of menus and a notepad menu ordering template and a pen. Hot down your stuff and away you go! We ended up with not only dessert but pork and crab xiao long bao (the pic on the menu was too tempting, plus the yelp reviews for this place!). I was not disappointed! So yum, so nicely parceled and explosives with delicious broth! And the dessert, mega yum! I got the mango sago in coconut milk - took me back to my childhood days :) Unfortunately service was crap. Inattentive staff. We thought it a good thing when the first waitress said the desserts will come after the dumplings. When we finished that I kindly dumped the sauce bowls and ours into the centre ready for clean up. There were heaps of workers around who didn't acknowledge us for 10 mins until we queried. The poor guy we flagged down had no idea what we were on about. Eventually we got our desserts. Once your seated at your table and start to flip through the menu, you'll see for yourself the amazing number of choices that's on offer. There is a dumpling theatre, where you can watch the chef's making all the dumplings. And there are all these different signs everywhere - none of them in English. In fact most signs around Box Hill aren't in English so it's like stepping into a completely different cultural hub that is unique to Melbourne. I order their beef noodle soup - which is a specialty in Taiwan and as they say, is made exactly the way they it is made in Taiwan. I also order four of their crab and pork meat dumplings. After around 15 minutes, the waitress brings out my first dish - the beef noodle soup. Around a minute or so later, my dumplings arrive in a cute little basket, complete with their house made dumpling sauce. My soup is swimming with vegetables and noodles that strangely remind me of underwater sea creatures, with their rigged edges. The vegetables and the soup itself is so fresh, you can smell the freshness as your biting into the perfectly cooked and self-marinated beef. And all the ingredients come together to create a scintillating experience that will delight your tastebuds. My dumplings were so soft and exploded with flavour as I bit into them - like all good dumplings should. Really yummy meat, perfectly done. Overall, the whole meal left me feeling revitalised, full, and very satisfied. I would definitely recommend it as a place you have to try at least once. You won't be disappointed. 5/5. The Kitchen Republk is a great concept - it's basically a Taiwanese hawker food court. We ordered an oyster omelette which was ok (didn't look as nice as the menu picture), wontons in vinegar and chili oil and pork and crab xiao long bao - which were the highlight of our meal. I had been to Food Republik once, but it was so long ago that I didn't really remember the details. I remember liking it though. I looked up reviews for it and was met with a lot of mixed reviews - that the food was average, service was terrible and the food was warm at best. I decided to brave it anyway. I was not disappointed in the least! Sure the service was basic, but if the food is good and the staff aren't rude I have no reason to complain! When you arrive, just wait near the front counter till someone comes over to find you a table and seat you. In terms of ordering, I found it self-explanatory, but I am a bit more familiar with the process than a complete beginner. It's still quite simple really - the items you desire to get your hungry little hands on have a alpha/numeric code next to it which you write down on the pad that's on the table. You write the quantity desired of said item and that's it! Just below is a separate section for drink choice which follows the same process. When you're done, there is a small circular device on a table corner with options to call a server for different reasons - just like on an airplane! We started out with steamed xiao long bao stuffed with crab meat (which didn't have an overpowering flavour), steamed pork dumplings in a black vinegar and chilli sauce, and a delicious Taiwanese style pork belly burger called a Gua bao. My cousin has a beer and I opted for a cold sour plum drink which I quite liked. We got a little greedy and ordered some chilli tofu with pork mince (umm, amazeballs much?) And steamed vegetarian dumplings with shiitake mushrooms. We weren't planning on getting dessert thanks to our overstuffed bellies, but the kind older couple next to us who had been giving us food recommendations (and surprised impressed reactions to our chopstick prowess) gave us a small bowl of the dessert they had! It was shaved ice with black pearls made of sticky rice and a sort of sweet jelly. That too, was, really really good. On top of it all, the prices were pretty good. Offering a fun and interesting experience to those unfamiliar with the lively markets of Taiwan, Food Republik is definitely worth at least one visit. My only issue is that there's a better Taiwanese restaurant (The Booth) down the road (same owner I believe...), with much of the same food but of higher quality. So it comes down to dining experience vs taste, which can be a hard choice. read more

This place was amazing. You can transfer this whole place to China and people wouldn't know the difference because it is so authentic. In fact, before I went to Australia, I actually saw the same exact food court in Guangzhou, China and it had the name Food Republik. Anyways, we got a bunch of Taiwanese snacks and they all tasted great. What I liked especially was their Chinese fried doughnuts with soy milk because I never get to eat that in America, where I'm from. After the meal, we looked at the dessert menu and I was overwhelmed by the choices. I got a bowl of grass jelly with taro sticky balls. Yum yum yum! read more

LOVE! We came here twice in a week. Food Republik is an amazing food hall where you can order from many different food stands. There is a dessert stand, a xiao long bao (shanghainese soup dumplings) stand, a taiwanese street food stand...etc. All amazing. Also this place is fantastic for people who want to have a cultural food experience but may be a bit picky. The menu is so vast that there is surely something to please each individual palette. D is in love with the pork belly - burger that is unique to any other pork belly bun I've ever had before. It's delicious pork served in a sweet white bun with some pickled veggies and crumbed peanuts. Don't be fooled- this is just a snack so definitely order something else!! The taiwanese beef noodle soup is a definite winner. I also liked the three cup chicken..got this with soup noodles instead of rice and it was amazing. The wontons and veggie dumplings are so-so. Went here for dinner and was a bit confused on the separate but fluid set up of three/four different kitchens. The food and service was prompt and very pleasing! Cash only payment is a bit annoying but starting to get more used to it now. Did I mention that it also is a bargain, hell you can feed the whole family for the price of a single plate at a fine dinning place. It's busy, noisy, tightly packed and convenient. A breath of fresh air for Box Hill - brings lots of new and expanded Asian food options, and the quality of everything I've tried has been great. I don't know of any other local restaurant you'll need to queue at busy times - not only because it's new but also because the food's good. It's a crowded, noisy "food-market" experience, but service is snappy, and the range of foods, drinks and desserts is extensive, and very well priced. I think this will really shake up other local restaurants, not a bad thing. read more

Always come here for xiao long baos and not disappointed. They often cook very good xiao long baos with juice inside and are very scrumptious. Texture was perfect and flavour is tasteful. Also ordered some hokkien noodles with nice flavour and freshness from the vegetables. Rice was also good. Very good place to good at great prices. Always will come back here. read more

What a complete joke of a place. I was looking for a breakfast place, and thought to give this place a visit. I hadn't expected my order of soft-boiled eggs and toast to be too challenging but gosh was I surprised. Fifteen minutes later and no sign of my food. Even a reminder to staff did not help - "We're just making it NOW and it'll be two minutes" turned out to be pure rubbish. Not in a hurry to return, that's for sure. read more
